Justin Upton, Dan Haren are NL All-Stars; Mark Reynolds Left Off

As per the TBS live selection show, Charlie Manuel's bench is loaded with first basemen, including Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, and Ryan Howard. Ryan Zimmerman is the backup 3B behind David Wright.

Reynolds looks like he got the shaft. Despite a .269 average, 23 home runs, 58 RBI, 52 runs, and 13 stolen bases, Charlie's just not that into him.

Will he be on the ballot to be the last man added to the roster? Lets hope so; Reynolds has earned a spot. [Jim adds: yes, Reynolds is on the list. Here is the link to vote. As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often!]

He is on the ballot for the final spot

I think he deserves the spot.

He would be useful to the team for multiple reasons.

1) He is a 3B, which is a valuable commodity on this team
2) He can play 1B, which could come in handy on any possible double switches that Manuel would pull.
3) Reynolds is better than the rest of the balloteers.

Go Mark!

Yes to 1 and 3

But we’ve already got four first basemen on the roster… =)

I really don't thin anyone here needs to be sold

On Reynolds’ All-Star credentials. I’m voting as we speak…

It was on at 1 EDT, I think

I would have missed it entirely if Emily hadn’t commented on it.

Considering it got underway while the Wimbledon final was reaching its climax, I can’t blame anyone for missing it, especially since it was on TBS.

by Cory Williams on Jul 5, 2009 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

Bizarre

Even if not on ESPN, I’d have thought it would be on Fox – who’re televising the ASG, as I recall – or perhaps the MLB Network. Wonder what TBS did to get it?

I felt sorry for Roddick

and thought Federer sounded a touch condescending in his remarks after the game, when he said that he lost last year too, and then Roddick said yeah, but you had already won it 5 times.

CW, you beat me to it!

Anyone know if there’s a limit to how many times you can vote? Because I KNOW voting for the ASG, it stopped us at 25, and I’m at at least 50 and it hasn’t stopped me yet.

Voting for the ASG,

it stopped counting my votes at 25 (or so the email said) but it let me keep voting….

I voted for Upton and Reynolds

at work with my 10 different email addys assigned to me. Then the next day it let me vote all over again. I got so tired I quit. However, I think I voted for each guy at least 300 times.

According to the Dbacks Twitter

There is no limit to how many times you can vote.

Looking at the rest of the rosters

found here

is interesting. Two Rockies and two Marlins, only one Cub. Only one Brave – Brian McCann.

I'd vote

for Pablo Sandoval. He’s having a better year, for a better team

Well,

by OPS, he’s right, even though Sandoval only has 6 HRs. Of course, he’s also fat and slow….

The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01

by DbacksSkins on Jul 5, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

that proves it, alright ;-)

I’m impressed by Reynolds’ accomplishments, but Sandoval’s been at least as good. Before Mark’s bomb today, Pablo actually had the higher SLG%, in a tougher park, and his OBP (the more important component of OPS) is quite a bit higher than Mark’s. They’re similar defensively and Reynolds is a better baserunner. So, it’s a close call.

I guess what sways my vote is the Giants have the league’s second best record and dont have a position player in the ASG. Their offense sucks, but it’s no worse than ours to date, and JUP’s been selected. Does a team with the league’s second worst record really deserve three All Stars? Hell, the Dodgers only have three.

Sandoval’s carried their offense, plus he can catch in a pinch. I think he’s a little more deserving.

These reasons

are why I won’t be upset if Sandoval makes it in over Reynolds. But I’m voting for Reynolds anyway.

"Win, or die" -- Marquise de Merteuil

by Jim McLennan on Jul 6, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

he’s got his own fans to vote for him. You’ve obviously forgotten that the whole point of the ASG is a popularity contest, ‘Hacks. If Sandoval gets in, okay, then. But in terms of voting, and especially since it’s for the almost-extra player, DBacks fans should put their vote in for MarK.

It's like living with a six-year old.

by 4 Corners Fan on Jul 6, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

ohhhhhhh!

you partisan “hack”, you :- P

If it was just a popularity contest, then I imagine fans would determine all the players – pitchers and reserves included. But fan popularity (and thirty team representation) competes with the professional and historical goal of honoring the best players.

MLB’s disjointed, multi-tiered system tries to balance those honorific and marketing objectives – with mixed results. For example, 3B Ryan Zimmermann was selected as the Nat’s lone rep, but probably isnt as deserving as Reynolds (or Sandoval). It stinks, but given the current choices, I think the game and sport are better served when fans opt for the most deserving candidates, rather than local favorites with the most homers and curliest hair.

Just 'cus Sandalman is on the Midgets

doesn’t mean he’s having a better year than Reynolds. Reynolds is + 12 in HR, +17 in RBI, and +10 in steals over Sandalman.
Sandalman might have a few stats on Reynolds, but Reynolds has put more victories in the DBacks win column than Sandalman has for the Midgets by far.

Go Diamondbacks!
