DFA Augie Ojeda
Why?
Augie is hitting 220/314/299 this season, to the tune of a 613 OPS
His career batting line is 232/318/308, 626 OPS
He's 34, he sucks, and is on the decline. He's dead weight.
DFA him, and call up a guy like rusty ryal.
That is all.

One more thing...
Since June 1 of this year he’s hitting .156/.270/.234 with a .505 OPS in 77 PAs.
Over his last three seasons in Arizona his OPS+ has dropped from 80 to 67 to this year’s 59.

would like to think
That CY has the first ticket, at least Augie can play defense at multiple positions and still appears to hustle. Watching game after game I wonder if CY thinks he’s in a never ending nightmare this season and has that zombie look plastered on his mug as he exists in continued disbelief that all of his skills have vanished.

The difference is
Cy has potential not to suck. Augie doesn’t. cy is still young. Augie isn’t.

Let's not turn this into a bash CY or bash upton thread, please
this is about Augie. And there’s no way the dbacks are going to eat CY’s contract regardless. they’ll give him another year at the very least.

well as you said, lets not turn this into a bash thread
but how many inexplicable pop ups have landed in the bermuda triangle behind 2nd base this year? CY had a rep of being a speedster who would cut that stuff off and his play on that single last night was less than optimal. His reaction after the gaffe was the item that was most telling, although perhaps he saw that Roberts had his back and that was the reason for his reaction. My thoughts are that his bat woes are affecting his defensive performance, which could be utter crap, but at least it shows up with the eye test. Maybe CY isn’t fully recovered from his earlier tweak. I want the guy to succeed, after all he’s a dback, just can’t help but wonder if a spell in the minors, with the pressure off, might help him rediscover his stroke.
As for DFA’ing Augie, OK that’s fine if you want to see a youngster get a chance, I have no issue with it, but heck, see if someone else needs a sparkplug type first before simply letting him walk, you just never know who’s shopping out there.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

If you think CY should be DFA'd
Start a DFA Chris Young post. I just think CY has way too much potential to give up on him now. I think he actually played that ball well, Roberts was closer to the ball after it got past him than CY.
CY’s ops is 650 this year, which is better than Augie ojeda’s career ops.
Cy has been the victim of bad luck, injuries, and just a bad season. I say we should give the rest of the year, and part of next year before we do something like DFA him. a spell in the minors might do him some good, but I don’t think that will help him much. I think it might just reinforce bad habits. i think he needs to turn it around in the majors.
I don’t think of Augie ojeda as a sparkplug. I see a a career AAAA player who had a good month and half in 07, and has been living off of that. since then he’s been dreadfully awful. CY since his 30/25 season in 07, has been an excellent centerfielder, but has had some offensive woes. He’s got a great minor league track record, he put up good numbers in june and most of july, and appears to be turning it around(some what). yeah, he’s had a lot of pop-ups.
No one is going to trade for Augie Ojeda. PERIOD. He’s not that good. I doubt we could even get a c grade prospect from a team, and if we did, it would be highway robbery.

if you want a short scrappy player
Call up Collin Cowgill, or f*ck, trade for david eckstein again. Just because he’s short and has no power, doesn’t make him a sparkplug. And his defense? yes he’s a good fielder, +3.2, but he’s also -8.2 on offense. He’s still a net loss in wins for the dbacks. he’s probably cost us 5 wins this year. Cy has been just as bad, but like i said he’s still young and has potential. Augie is on the decline, and is only going to get worse. Cy can only get better from here.

it's a free country
and no one is disputing that CY is younger and has more potential.
But if you want to compare a starting OF position with a backup utility infielder and point to their batting stats as the compelling arguement for why one guy should be shown the door over another then we’ll just agree to disagree if that’s alright by you.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

That's fine.
but we’re basically saying the same thing. you can’t compare cy and ojeda. I just think that this team does not have room for deadweight in a losing season. that’s my main problem. if we had an ofer in the minors who was mashing and was blocked by cy, i’d be clamoring to dfa CY too. But the problem is, we just don’t have better options at this point.

really
Very true, you can’t compare CY and Ojeda. CY is still a young player with some good tools. He will get better once he figures out his timing and approach at the place. Ojeda is only going to get worse, he’s older and there is no conceivable upside. Time for DFA Ojeda and give some young kid a chance.

Ryal
by the way, in case anyone is interested, Ryal is raking in Reno, and he’s 26, so it’s about time for him to test out the bigs and see if he can cut it.
his numbers this year (granted, in a hitters division): 293, 17 HR, 69 RBI, 892 OPS, 5 SB.
sure, he’s no replacement for Augie’s defense, but there is no question his bat is going to be far superior.

i’m just saying that while this doesn’t totally taint my impression of augie, it certainly doesn’t help it. you’re a mlb player. sure, he’s not on a million $ contract, but he’s earning exponentially more than most of us.
seriously, every manager ought to sit down every kid who is called up from the minors and have a chat about their relationship with the public. here’s what i’d say:
1) you’re a public figure now, the rules are different. you can be irritated by that all you want, but it’s not going to do any good. the sooner you accept it, the better.
2) sign autographs — unless you’re absolutely sure it’s a money grubbing collector, assume the best and sign the autograph.
3) don’t go in public unless you’re willing to talk to fans.
4) over tip.
5) if you think there is any chance you’re intoxicated, don’t be cheap and stupid: take a taxi.
6) contribute some amount of time and money to a local charity that interests you.
7) run out every ground-out and pop up.
8) never call out a team mate or a coach in public.
oh, and on an unrelated subject, you may think you know with the money you’re about to make. you don’t. and neither does that friend of yours whose told you he knows how to manage it. give it to a professional.
that’s all, son. let’s play ball.

Not up to me to provide a decent wage for your employees. Build it into your prices, and make a tip truly discretionary. That’s how it should be. I’m especially down on this in bars – three seconds of work, flipping open a bottle of beer, retail price a buck, for which you just charged me $5, does not entitle you to a tip.

Yeah, bad tips suck. I worked for Einstein Brothers Bagels while living in Tucson and we got really sh*tty tips a lot. Of course we had snobby people come in and they’d invade the place on the weekends…we’d go out of our way for them as usual and they’d leave us really crappy tips…so I can relate.
I do recall one year during ST when two now-former Dbacks, pitcher Erik Sabel and outfielder Rob Ryan came in for lunch and I had the pleasure of waiting on them. Not only did they leave me an excellent tip ($10 a piece from each of them) but they also left me an autographed baseball card from each of them. About a week later, Rob came in again and brought his wife with him. Nice people they were, as was Erik…they left me yet another great tip!

Yes, I tend to root for the underdogs…but then the biggest-name player I root for still to this day is Todd Helton…Jeff Salazar I discovered years ago during his days in the Rockies’ minors…Augie I discovered during his time with the Twinkies…
I root for the underdogs, the total gamers, the scrappers…the Craig Counsell/David Eckstein types, yes…

Loved Sally
Love Augie. You root for them because they play hard. They just stink. It’s depressing, I know.

And you are so correct my friend…it does stink!

Umm...
You might want to re-read that and then rescind your agreement… I said they stink.

Augie = Scrappy
You get the impression he hasn’t had anything handed to him and has had to fight for every at-bat. It’s that blue-collar work ethic which connects with fans, and conversely, may help explain why the fan-base is still relatively cold to Justin Upton, who gives the appearance of having waltzed into a starting job with a fat bonus check. Of course, stuff like the fake ball-toss doesn’t help there. But he’s 21. How many mature, responsible 21-year olds do you know, and that’s without the public pressure.
Anyway, returning to Augie, I don’t have a problem with him on the roster. While his offense is weak, by UZR, combined across his three positions, he’s one of the best fielders on the team, a useful piece to have as a late-inning defensive replacement, etc.
I can see the appeal of giving Ryal a shot, but would probably prefer it to be at the expense of Ryan Roberts.

Respectfully Disagree
I would keep Roberts ahead of Augie. Augie is quickly on the decline being a solid way into his 30’s, while Roberts has shown that he can play some D (although perhaps not as well as Augie), and that he has significantly more pop in his bat. Augie isn’t going to be on our roster next season, so why keep him around now? Roberts could have value as a utilityman next year.

I have to agree with IHSB
Sorry Jim,
But with this season written off whats the use in playing Augie out there when I can’t see him being a part of the team next season and doesn’t really contribute to us winning either.
I’d rather give starts to Reynolds at 2B and Ryal and any other prospects.
That being said I have nothing against the guy and he’s been a decent player throughout parts of his time here.
Time for another drink then?

Augie=Scrappy indeed!
I so agree. Augie is indeed the epitome of the blue-collar work ethic person, hence one big factor why I relate to him so well. Same can be said with Salazar, David Dellucci, Craig Counsell, David Eckstein…and yes, Ryan Roberts too!

this is from the BTF trade deadline chat
I asked what we could get for Augie Ojeda
Dan Szymborski: Augie Ojeda couldn’t fetch an Augie Ojeda baseball card.

Who's to say...
That Augie WON’T be here next year? We don’t know that, as NONE of us are Josh Byrnes! For all we know, Augie could be back!

Because he's horrible already
And declining. Another winter/spring going by on the calendar won’t help his lateral quickness defensively and his bat speed offensively. He’d be a candidate for below the Mendoza Line. Like, I don’t mean to romp on the parade, because it’s clear you love the guy, and if it works for you, then great. I’m just telling the depressing truth. : /

I hear you there...
Depressing indeed…he’ll make a great coach someday, having all this experience under his belt. It sucks seeing the players you dig and follow decline suddenly. I know within the next 4 years both Augie and Todd Helton will be heading toward retirement and that is depressing to think about, at least for me.

Helton's got a lot of baseball left
And his contract seemingly never ends. So there you go, some good news. :-)

Helton is another gamer :)
Toddboy will retire as a Rockie too (I am hoping at least)…he’s done wonders for the state of Colorado, for the community, the organization,, and the fans. Todd Helton=Class Act all the way!

I don't think anyone
is disputing that your faves are classy ballplayers. The point of this post is that, well, Augie Ojeda sucks. Always has, probably always will.
This team is trying to build toward the future, and the release of Tony Clark was the beginning of that. The average age of our outfielders is 23. Releasing old players that won’t go anywhere but down is more effective in rebuilding than sending down young players that have nowhere to go but up. I like Augie, but I like the success of my team more.

I understand that...
I have noticed Augie is starting to hit a little more…not that it changes anything…but I am glad to see him starting to find his groove again…the team as a whole has looked good the past 3 games
