D-backs payroll stable with cash investment
More follow up on the cash-call; as that story has dropped off the front-page, figured a new one was needed. The link has more info on the deferred salaries issue: "That principle figure now stands at about $40 million and "the bulk of that money will paid off in three years," Kendrick said, freeing up more cash to spend on the team." He also repeats how perilous the situation was inherited from Jerry: "When we came in, we took over a severely stressed, although not declared, but a nearly legally bankrupt club. That's where we were."

I can only imagine the damage
done if JC had stayed…… How am I suppose to be grateful now to the man who brought baseball to the valley and spent it into bankruptcy 5 years later?
Have we sent the "Don't shoot, we're pathetic" transmission yet?

Even though
Jerry almost ran the team into bankruptcy, it was still worth it because of the trophy sitting in the Chase Field lobby.
Makes you appreciate more the work the current ownership group has had to do, dealing with this and still trying to put a decent team on the field.

The fanbase...
is already fickle and despite the most affordable tickets in the MLB, getting people to come out to a game is like pulling teeth. Imagine how bad it would be if people didn’t have that fond memory of the most dramatic WS in recent history.
I am upset at the manner in which he left the team, but without Jerry, a D-backs game would probably look like a Marlins game these days.
typical businessman
sure, we won a WS and Jerry got his money, thats it in a nutshell. he ran the team in the ground financially – partly im sure to win a championship, but dont kid yourself it was bc he wanted to make money and having a team on the playoff track increases his pocketbook. he was reckless and so greedy for that ring/money that he nearly bankrupted the organization and then skipped town before having to face the music.
since he left, the dbacks have been limited in their financial capabilities (ie this year not resigning randy johnson for 5 mil a year !! come on) and everyone assumes they current management doesnt know what they are doing and man it would be nice to have jerry back, ah the ignorance and irony.
this is the same guy who was able to get public funding to build a baseball only stadium – which in fact the citizens of this city and county did NOT vote on. it never came up in ballots like most other cities, ie marlins, where it could be shot down; no it was sent somehow to a committee of 6 people that made the decision to allow a 1/2 cent sales tax increase for said stadium.
do i really care about my estimated 30 dollars it cost me for stadium, no; but jerry (great with the suns) has been from day one with the dbacks involved with shady deals and unethical business tactics. this is supposedly the reason the dbacks have never had the all star game yet, almost every new stadium gets it within the first 5 years, we are going to be in our 13th year when i think we finally see it.
fox sports tried to ask hard questions of jerry about the stadium funding back in the early 00’s and he straight walked out the interview. i guess the adage the End justifies the Means fits this like a glove, and every phx sports fan backs has been hoodwinked by a WS ring.
as long as jerry stays away im a huge fan of the team :)
There's no doubt
The funding of the original stadium was definitely questionable. I’m strongly opposed to the public funding any professional sports venue, especially without a vote. [I recommend you find a copy of the book Big League, Big Time, which goes into the whole birth of the franchise. Fascinating stuff.]
Jerry was a master at getting other people to spend their money. I believe he had very little commitment himself to the franchise. As a Diamondbacks fan, I feel about him the way I feel about a woman with whom you have a great relationship, but who then departs suddenly, leaving you with nothing but a rash and a subscription to freecreditreport.com. It was great at the time, but hoo-boy…

This is disturbingly fitting…. :-(

re
on the issue of the publicly funded baseball stadium – not a cent , not one cent has been paid back by the organization to the city. where can i go and get a loan from the public without there approval and not pay any part of it back for 12+ years. (publicly funded stadiums are the biggest joke, we cant afford to operate hospitals, schools, prisons, homeless shelters; but damn we can build a stadium that will be never be able to be used by the public, hmm)
The All-Star Game
in 2 years will put that money back into the city. The World Series in 01 probably brought in millions of dollars as well.
Just having a Major League Baseball team in the state brings lots of money to the state. It increases the tourism to the area. When the team does well, it puts the city/state in the national spotlight, which can increase the marketability of the area. The publicly funded stadium is a give and take. Sure it’s not a hospital, school, ect, but those are not profitable businesses. The Diamondbacks mere presence in Phoenix brings enough money to the area each year to make it worth the price of the stadium.
It's more like
when a college-aged girl’s father buys a condominium and then rents it to her. Would he have bought it without her? Probably not, but she IS paying rent. The Dbacks organization pays rent on the stadium, as well as raising the quality of life, contributing to the local economy, helping to revitalize the formerly warehouse district around the BOB, etc.
