No Surgery for Webb
Webb says three specialists all gave him the same answer: don't have surgery. He'll spend four to six weeks strengthening the muscle and not throwing, but he hopes he can be back in time to make a few starts in September.

I don't think that's good
He won’t be the same this year, that’s pretty much guaranteed. Unless he goes 6-0 with a sub-2 ERA in September, he ain’t getting the club option, so he will be a FA after the season. Plus, even the September return is highly unlikely after what has been going on with his rehab so far.

Even a farewell tour
It’s no big compensation for missing an entire year, but even if we just get to say goodbye to Webb while he walks from the field for the last time, this news is a good thing.

especially for Webb

This won't be
the last time he walks off the field. In the Diamondbacks uniform, maybe. Either way, he will definitely be gone after 2010 – we have a cheap ace locked up for 3 more years, and if Webb pitches well next year (which he will, no doubt), he will cost a fortune to sign.

Obviously
Webb won’t be his Cy Young self if he returns in September, and i think we’d be stupid be expect that. As long as he shows signs of promise and doesn’t completely blow up I say we pick him up. He has way too much upside as we already know.
Of course, this is even if he plays in September.

Carpenter
was spectacular when he returned, and he was out for nearly a year and a half.

Thank you.
It’s driving me crazy that people just want to let him go. Isn’t it possible that they were being ultraconservative in shutting Webb down even if there was some discomfort there in the shoulder after being out 2 months?? You can’t tell me that most, if not all, pitchers have discomfort here and there after throwing a little round ball as many as 100 times every five days for 6 months a year?

Ultraconservative
“The first doctor I saw, Meister, looked at the MRIs and the first thing he said was, ‘They didn’t do a contract because of this?’” Webb said.
I understand Brandon’s a very interested party and the quote has yet to be corroborated by Dr Meister, but if accurate, this strikes me as something of a bombshell. When this came to light a while back, the Dbacks suggested the contract was pulled because insurers indicated concerns (red flags).
At the time, I said:
… We lack context for these red flags (ie how abnormal is it for an insurer to detail concerns, downsides, risks when assessing any multi-million dollar “property”?)
… There is no evidence to date that insurers refused to cover Brandon Webb.
… There is no evidence to date that insurers assessed BW as riskier than pitchers at large (or pitchers who’ve thrown 1300 IP, etc)
In the above quote, let’s be clear about who “they” are. Insurance companies dont write MLB player contracts. Major league clubs make that call. And it sounds like an experienced specialist may be surprised by that decision. Doesnt mean he’s right. But he’s surprised.
To be fair, Brandon says he “doesnt feel good” and certainly didnt pitch well on Opening Day, but I think Meister’s alleged reaction is interesting, especially since none of the specialists recommend surgery.

Regardless of September
It’s encouraging that three specialists all looked at the problem and said he didn’t need surgery to fix it.

re-reading this thread, this keeps catching my eye.

So if the DBacks decline
Webb’s $8.5 million option for 2010, the rotation next season looks like… Haren, Scherzer…and… who?
Davis will be a free agent after this season, there is a mutual option on Garland for $10 million. It looks like there are some serious decisions to be made on next year’s rotation and it could look very different than it has in quite a few years.

And also with you.

yep
and if a blockbuster package were offered for Haren, who’s to say it’d be turned down, looking toward the future and all.

it's the domino theory
not re-signing webb means haren most likely wants out of az to a contender (who can blame him, he can only put up with so much). as newjack pointed out, that would leave scherzer…and a 2010 rebuilding project i guess.

haren
unlike other sports, baseball superstars very rarely (Manny being the lone exception I can think of) actually force their way out of town. Haren will stay put. There is absolutely no reason for the team to deal him. None.
