What it says on the tin, the Orioles are being courted to be the third tenent for a new Tucson facility designed to keep the Diamondbacks and Rockies in the area.

The Orioles aren't strangers to Arizona, having trained in Yuma starting in the 1950's.

Fat chance.

Would be nice, though.

Go Dbacks. (Temporary signature)

Really

I don’t get the idea behind 3 team training complexes.

Yeah

But it cuts the team’s spring training ticket revenues, and increases their travel expenses.

It would

be the first modern one that I can think of, so I imagine it’ll be a hard sell.

There is no reason for the Dbacks to stay in Tucson

The bulk of their fanbase is in the Phoenix metro area. It would make much more sense for them to move closer to Phoenix than stay in Tucson. Since people come to see their teams play from other states anyway, it would make no difference whether they go to Phoenix or Tucson; for a lot of Dbacks fans, however, it’s too big of a burden most of the time to go all the way down to Tucson to see a game that doesn’t matter.

In play, out(s)

The problem is,

unlike other teams in the Cactus League, the Dbacks are unlikely to be a huge draw in Phoenix anyway, because Phoenicians can see them just as easily during the regular season, in actual games. Holding spring training in Tucson shows a certain dedication that prevents them from becoming the Phoenix Diamondbacks, and Tucsonans are less likely to drive up to see regular season games anyway. If it’ll help keep fan interest in Tucson, I’ll gladly pay the extra half cent sales tax, or whatever it’s gonna take to keep them and the Rockies here.

I won't

The sales tax crap worked so well with TEP, didn’t it? The county has been stuck paying for most of it because the tax didn’t pay for the costs. We don’t have money for basic services, but we have money to throw at billionaire owners and millionaire players? Not me. I’ve voted for tax increases in the past. In fact, even though I smoke, I’ve voted for tobacco tax increases. That was for things like healthcare. For a baseball complex? Not no, but hell, no. Let ‘em leave. I’m so sick of seeing tax money spent for private enterprises while schools are told that they have to cut their budgets.

TEP

was a stupid idea from the very beginning — you can thank Raul Grijalva for that bullshit.

Congratulations.

That would also explain soco posting it.
