Why are TC and Byrnes still playing?
Both are in a season-long slump. AND it's June and we are massively in last place, which means it's time to throw in the towel on this season & get started on 2010. So why are these two hacks still getting starts?
Here's my opinion: they are being given the chance to perform over the next few weeks to increase their trade value. If either CAN be traded, they will be. Clark is making $750K or so, which isn't a huge contract to eat (I only say that because it's not my money being spent). Byrnes and his bat-5h1t crazy $10 mil contract, on the other hand, is a difficult one to swallow. To make things worse, Byrnes is such an obscene disappointment I'm not sure he can be traded.
So...what's next? I foresee a handful of scenarios for both (hopefully) soon-to-be-former DBacks.
Clark Exit Scenarios
1) He might be valuable as a pinch hitter for a playoff contender. He's a low-risk trade and probably won't fetch a lot in return, but anything is better than just cutting him. In this scenario, I'd like to see us pick up a promising young middle reliever.
2) The team buys out his contract and offers him a coaching job in Mobile or South Bend.
Prediction: #1 would be great, #2 is likely.
Byrnes Exit Scenarios
1) The team buys out his contract and cuts his swing-at-the-first-pitch-and-pop-out-or-hit-a-weak-grounder-off-the-end-of-the-bat-then-later-bobbles-the-ball-over-the-fence ass from the team immediately.
2) He is part of a package deal with another player(s). "Hey Cubs -- you want Lopez and Qualls? You gotta take Byrnes AND his contract too."
3) He gets his act together and bats .350 over the next 4 weeks, and gets traded with cash for a prospect.
Prediction: PAIN, and #1.
Every time The Eric Byrnes Show appears on my channel guide I shake my head in disgust. I don't want to see him on the field either. But we are stuck with him until an exit strategy materializes.

TC
needs to be politely reminded by the FO that he sucks, and nudged to retire but stay with the org.

I'd like to see him stay in the organization.
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.
No problem with that
He’d make a fine coach, of that I’ve no doubt. But his line after Opening Day is horrendous – .118/.250/.147 – and he should not be allowed to face major-league pitching again.

you dont bench a guy with a huge contract. makes you look even more like an idiot.
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.
Especially since
the guy who was 99% responsible for that idiotic deal is now with another organization.

Why else do they play him if not to look like idiots ?
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.
I think they play him because if they do not they will look even more like morons to the fans and they would be a little more outrage as he and 11 mil sits on the bench.
I agree that is you do not play well you shouldnt play.

Do you
really think it will change things significantly?
Funny, Brown doesn't offer a degree in slut!
Depends
on the other options. I think you play your best players as often as you can. If Byrnes is one of our best right now, you play him. Otherwise, you bench him.

I suppose
if CoJack were back it would be easier to do that, but it’s hard for me to believe that there is a better option right now unless the FO dips into the trade market or looks for a waiver snipe.

That is the Unfortunate Point
While Young mends, there is no better option in the organization.
Wait, Pollock just signed. Get him up here.
Does he
Get to use an aluminum bat? :-)

Does he need to?
He was MVP of the Cape Cod League, which uses wood bats….
"Scott, if your life had a face, I would punch it. I would punch your life in the face."
Ooh.
Good point. Can he get to Phoenix by 6:40?
As an aside, anyone know why college ball uses aluminum bats? Can’t surely be for cost reasons, can it?

It might be
You don’t have to worry about aluminum bats breaking.
"Scott, if your life had a face, I would punch it. I would punch your life in the face."
True.
If they used aluminum bats in the majors, whatever would Mark Grace talk about?
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01
Yes, it is
The colleges don’t have to replace the bats and the bat companies use college baseball like the shoe companies use basketball. Go to any baseball sporting goods store and every bat company is linked to half a dozen premier college programs.
Weird
Probably explains why most prospects take 2-3 years or more to go from college to the majors in baseball, while they go more or less direct from the draft to the NFL or NBA. It’d be like having the ring five feet off the ground in college, rather than ten.
I’d have said the companies would want wooden bats in college. I mean, you get a senior stud prospect using and liking your wooden bats before he gets drafted, he may use them the rest of his life. Just because he likes your aluminum ones, doesn’t mean he’ll like your wooden ones when he becomes a first-round pick.

I didn't say
that Byrnes was not our best 3rd or 4th option at OF.

Alternate theory:
Maybe Clark, Byrnes and (to a lesser extent) Montero are playing so much lately because the front office is auditioning them to other teams. Think about it: if one of them goes on a tear before the all-star break, the front office could pawn them off to some contender and actually get some value in return. Or maybe I’m giving the guys in charge too much credit.
And yes, I know that Montero is catching full-time now because Snyder is on the DL, but even before that he had been getting far more playing time than most backup catchers. Miggy has almost as many PAs (155) on the season as Snyder (165).

we're stuck
with Byrnes. he’s not going anywhere. when CoJack comes back he’ll slide back into the 4th OF role. he’s completely untradable.
with TC, i think there’s a better chance of cutting him and handing him the reins of a minor league club. let’s hope that happens sooner rather than later.

unstuck.
Byrnes is injured. Sorry for EB, but it’s good for the team, especially with Tracy poised to come off the DL.
