Shoulder surgery for Webb looking likely
"One possibility appears to be surgery to repair his labrum, a procedure that would require a nine-month rehab process.
But a decision has not been made as Webb is expected to seek a second opinion this week."
Probably doesn't come as a shock. Not a lot of detail in article.

Dammit..... labrum? Really??
At least he and Jeff Francis can work out together….
The chances that Webby pitches for the Dbacks ever again might have just exsanguinated.

Extension for Webb?
Thinking outside of the box and assuming surgery is necessary (and next year is basically lost, too). Would you, as GM of the ’Backs think of picking up the 2010 option (consider it a signing bonus), and simultaneously signing Webb to a 3-4 year extension (2011 – 2014) at a reasonable rate (say 5 million) with roster and/or performance bonuses to get his total pay back to elite levels.
I have no pre-conceived notion that Webb would be agreeable to such a proposal.

Interesting idea...
I imagine the 2010 free-agent market for Webb is no longer quite as bullish as it was, hopes of $20m per year likely no longer the case. The question is, will he ever be able to pitch as effectively again? I’m not sure what the recovery prognosis would be, I’ll have to look into that…

I would,
accept the FO doesn’t like to give performance bonuses.
Because this is Arizona.

All Good Things Must Come to an End
and it is the same with the performance bonus ban, eventually the FO will drop this policy, which is only ‘justifiable’ by the debt management argument. If the FO wont drop the policy, eventually, then another stone is cast our way…

Not 'performance' bonues, no.
Those are largely barred anyway. This is for health-related issues, which they have done before. We did that with Tom Gordon and IIRC, Jeff Salazar. Both received incremental contracts based on the number of days spent on the active roster.

Extension
The only probably with an extension right is that I heard the insurance on a new Webb contract would be outrageous. I heard that was part of problem they ran into when trying to work out an extension before. I think they will just buy next years contract (2 mill right??). That would free up about 8 mill and we all know how worried about the bottom line the FO is.
