2004 or 2009?

i'm torn, sometimes i really enjoy living in the past, especially when i have a few free hours and my '01 world series dvd's at the ready. we're at +1 on '04, so things are pretty close to even at this point, just let me know if I should grab doc and marty, fire up the delorean and get the flux capacitor, um, fluxing. what would have happened if marty mcfly would have run into teen wolf in 1985? weird.

Poll
At this point in the season, which is better, 2004 or 2009?
2004: At least we knew we sucked and didn't have to get our hopes up every night, plus no bandwagoners to fight for tickets.
9 votes
2009: Yeah, we'll go through a carton of Rolaids by the time the year is out, but, you know, "May you live in interesting times" and all.

Carton of Rolaids by years end??

Try by the top of the 9th inning every game!

As bad as this team has played at times and as maddeningly frustrating as several of the losses have been recently, this year does not have the same feel as 2004.

What about

the option of “I like to watch baseball?”

It feels different this year in a lot of ways simply because there are more players that I really like even when they’re failing spectacularly as a team.

it's not even close

this year has been extremely frustrating thus far, of course, but at least we’ve got some guys that make the games fun to watch.

i think my best memory of 2004 was being there for an alan zinter walk off vs. the brewers. it was the first game i went to alone & kept score, but the point is alan zinter. alan zinter. we endured tim olsen, mike fetters, casey daigle, randy choate, doug devore, a crippled carlos baerga, ’roider estella, brent mayne, andy green, luis terrero, and on and on. you KNEW they would lose every day. it was more of a surprise when they won, whereas a team loaded with Upton, Drew, Haren, Reynolds, etc., is expected to win.

When the ‘09 squad wins, it’s usually because they finally played up to their potential. When the ‘04 team won, it was because the other team f’d up.

…. or couldn’t get a single runner on base for the entire game.

2004 did give us a perfect game, which is going to be up there with World Series wins as “Most Awesome Diamondback Memories.”

blaaaah

I still remember that damn season, it’s been, what, 5 years now? If I didn’t see the score on the news or espn, getting the paper out, looking through the scores, saying “oh, that’s a surprise….”

BUT! I did wear my DBacks’ hat still, even though I lost it now….

what else do you want to talk about as this season drags on? I think we’ve already covered who’s going to be traded, our ’09 draft picks and the fact that our bullpen sucks ad nauseum. Definitely cauliflower.

"Bandwagoners"?

To an organization thats only 10 yrs old? And they won the World Series in ‘01? Pretty sure most Az baseball fans have been supporting the team since then…..
Bandwagoners? C’mon, let’s not be too proud, now.

Speak for yourself

Been supporting this team since before day one. This state has an awful record for only supporting its teams when they are winning – see the Cardinals for details. That’s not my style of fandom: indeed, it’s when things aren’t going well that I think the team needs your support most of all. Sheesh, if we think we’ve got it bad, look at the Royals – haven’t made the post-season since 1985, one year with more than 77 wins since the Diamondbacks came into existence.

They’ve got real fans, not those idiots posting on AZ Central – ‘Boo-hoo, I don’t like the new manager, I’m never going to another game again.’ Well, not until they reach the post-season, eh?

Jim

I didn’t know Arizonans and valley residents were not allowed to all of a sudden start rooting for the Cardinals when they made the SuperBowl…..I don’t think the valley got that memo…..I think it would have looked even worse on our “record” if we hadn’t started flying the Cards Flag and buying the t-shirts….to the rest of the country that is. What did you want, the rest of the state to boycott their trip to the Florida SuperBowl? Because they’re not “REAL” fans? LOL. That woulda looked great on ESPN……“Tonight on Sportscenter the unwavering and stoic valley residents still refuse to support their NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals as they leave an empty tarmac on the way to the SuperBowl in Florida. Andrea Kramer reports…..” Because of the lack of “REAL” fans (lol), the Arizona Cardinals left the airport this afternoon unkowingly to most valley residents! And it seems that there will be only 4 “REAL” Cardinals fans at the SuperBowl, for that is the alotted ticket amount. This has been Andrea Kramer reporting from an extremely dedicated, albeit, small fanbase here at Sky Harbor Airport. ESPN".
SHeesh…..c’mon….lets not get carried away with this real fan fake fan b.s.

Yes

Because that’s what we’re talking about. It’s not at all about wanting people to support a team during rough times, it’s wanting everyone to shun them when they succeed. Nailed it on the head there.

Perhaps you misunderstood,

from the poll, Jim, he said “Bandwagoners” in 2004. How could there be “bandwagoners” in 2004? The team was formed 6 years earlier and had a World Series title by that time……Seems like the entire fan base were however directly/indirectly “bandwagoners”.
And by thae way, I think the owner, the GM, and the manager are terrible, put them all in a boo-hoo soup. That being said, I have been a partial season ticket holder since ‘99. And I will continue to be…..
And that term “bandwagoner”…..what a dumb concept, to label fans. I laugh at the people who claim they’re REAL fans SINCE DAY 1 ! Who cares? Root for a team when you want…..this is America, not Russia.
If taking pride and boosting our own personal sense of existence in “fandom” revolves around letting people know we’re REAL fans, not FAKE ones (lol) is important to our sense of belonging, then so be it.
I’ve been going to White Sox games since I was 3. DBacks games since I lived out here. Bandwagoners or not, who cares….root for the team. The more the merrier.
REAL FANS….what does that mean? LOL.
Although I still have season tickets, I COMPLETELY understand people’s refusal to go to games when the team is horse-shit. Would you continue to buy poor products at the store? Invest your time and money in a tool that doesn’t work for “pride’s sake”?
We want to talk about pride in a fanbase? Going to a game in the past 10 years at Chase/Bank One has been amusing. One fan has a bit too much to drink, gets loud and rags on players and the fans look at him like he’s from Mars.
I will continue to hold season tickets, and support the team, but let’s not get crazy, Jim.

I said

there weren’t any bandwagoners in ’04, which made it easier to go to games.

Jim nailed it, Arizona has a terrible track record of only supporting their teams when they’re winning, look no further than Cardinals’ super bowl run last year. Granted, I was glad to have everyone on board, but where were they when you could hear a pin drop in Sun Devil during games back in the day? I’m not trying to puff myself up as mr. no. 1 fan and brag to everyone in range that i’ve been a fan since day one, it’s just that being a fan means exactly that, whether you’re first or worst. I agree, you don’t have to go to the games and pay good money to see crap. And you’re right, we need the casual fans also to fill the seats, but a real fan doesn’t tune out until next year a quarter into the season and not check a box score again until spring training. Does casual D’Backs fan know the starting rotation presently? Could they name it in ’04? Hence, bandwagoners, I rest my case.

You’re obviously not a bandwagoner, so not sure why you’re carrying their water :)

I still don't understand the whole....I'm a REAL fan mindset. Checking boxscores and knowing the rotation

makes a real fan? I’ve been a White Sox fan since 1970. They’ve been horse-shit most of that time.
But I love em. I root for the team in good times (few) and bad. That doesn’t make me a REAL fan. It makes me a fan. In ‘05, they won the trophy, I was happy to see it. I went to two World Series games. I’m sure there were a lot of “bandwagoners” that had better seats than I did, who cares? Labeling fans “REAL FANS” or “BANDWAGONERS” is so arbitrary. Do we get a reward if we can prove our “REAL FAN” worthiness? And I do know a few “REAL FANS” that have tuned out due to the “brilliance” of our front office and management. The term REAL fan only resides in our psyche, our need to necessitate some sort of belonging to satisfy our own sense of worth. Nothing more, nothing less. It is not measurable. It makes us feel better in our own little worlds. It is a self absorbed concept, to an extent. The guy next to me at Game 2 of the ‘05 World Series was a former Cub fan. He said he started rooting for the Sox when they clinched the AL. Good for him ! Who gives a shit?
I see where you’re coming from. Believe me. But as you have read, it has always amused me to hear people who claim “FAN SUPERIORITY”. My season ticket (partial) holdings don’t make me any more of a fan than the guy who goes to 2 games a years. We’re both fans.
It is not measurable …..in fact, it seems goofy and ridiculous.
Unless one happens to be those fckin’ WHACKOS in the endzone of the Raiders games. Horns and helmets and paint and spikes and felony records…hell, THOSE are real fans…..LOL.
By the way, I still think you started a good post here….and its a pleasure bantering with you .

good point

life is too short to be a baseball snob instead of a fan, so I hope i didn’t come across as the guy at the game who rolls his eyes when someone wonders aloud who Steve Finley plays for now. I just don’t get how fans can truly appreciate a good playoff run if they only come along for the ride once the team is actually in the playoffs.

at any rate, thanks for the good input, same to you, appreciate the running dialogue.

No, you didn't come across that way.....

If anybody is the asshole here, its me. Just offering another point of view. And when the White Sox made the World Series it certainly made me reflect on attending the games at the Old Comiskey, in the 70s and 80s, where urine ran down the grandstand walkways and marijuana smoke saturated the air………and our team was entertaining, but not very good. I hear Jonny. The “journey” is the adventure.

To clarify

Obviously, there’s room for all levels of interest in the Diamondbacks [or any other sports franchise]. Hell, I was cheering for the Cardinals in the SuperBowl as hard as anyone else. However, if you’re interest is solely or directly linked to the success of the team, and your reaction to the team struggling or making a decision you don’t like, is to say you’re not going to support them, then I’m afraid you

Dammit, hit post too early there.

…were never much of a fan to begin with, in my eyes.

It’s kinda like being someone’s friend. Even if, for whatever reason, you don’t hang out with someone as much as you used to, you can still remain amicable. You may not agree with every decision they take, but if you cut off someone every time they do that, you shortly won’t find yourself with many friends. It’s in times of trouble that you find out who your real friends are, because they’re the ones that are still there for you, rather than bailing at the first sign of a problem.
