Diamondbacks 4, Giants 6: Errors and Strikeouts and Bengie Molina! Oh, my!
Record: 25-35. Pace: 68-94. Change on last season: -7. Change on 2004: +1
I know what you're saying right now. "Really? Three errors? Thirteen Strikeouts? The side was struck out in the bottom of the ninth!?" Yeah, you're probably not the only one wondering what in the world is going on with this team. The boys did manage to muster seven hits and four runs through the first five innings to make things relatively interesting. Unfortunately, the D-Backs only had one base runner beyond that with Roberts walking in the bottom of the sixth. That's zero hits and seven strikeouts from the Arizona offense after the fifth inning. Let's take a look at how it all unfolded:
The game began with a pair of errors by Doug Davis and Ryan Roberts after only three batters. Things settled down from there though and Double D escaped with only one run allowed. Arizona countered with a run in the bottom of the inning with compliments to Stephen Drew with the only 2-out RBI of the game (for the good guys). Davis continued to struggle and manged to hit 100 pitches after only four innings. He finished with the line of six hits, five runs, two earned, three walks, and one strikeout.
After that, not much. The D-Backs cut the lead to one with an impressive string of hits in the bottom of the fifth. With RBIs from Drew and Upton, the score was slimmed to 5 - 4. Vasquez, Rauch, and Pena all put in quality efforts to keep the game intact until Chad Qualls slipped up in the ninth as the Giants tacked on a bit of insurance with a Bengie Molina RBI, his third of the game. It's interesting to take note in the fact that our bullpen fairs well when the team is trailing.
Like I said though, nothing really happened thereafter. It was... ugh. Let's just wrap this up. Stephen Drew is credited as the only D-Back to have a multi-hit game while he exteneds the hitting streak to fourteen games. He's batting .388 for the brief month of June with five doubles and six RBIs. The Chris's, Young and Snyder, were the only Arizona starters to not have a hit but both managed to reach base with a walk.
Thanks again to Jim for allowing me to write tonight's recap. Sorry that it ended up a little shorter than the usual. I'm tired.

It started in the middle, went down, came back to the middle, went seriously down, almost came back to the middle and then gradually went down to the bottom. You should thank me for sparing you all the gory details.

Timely hitting fails again
The D’Backs couldn’t get timely hitting again when there is a runner on.

CHRIS YOUNG NEEDS TO GO TO THE MINORS FOR REHAB
Chris Young saw 17 pitches on the night and basically just stood there with the bat on his shoulders. Of the 17, he swung at 3, all fouls. His last at-bat consisted of watching 3 called strikes for his second K of the game. Won’t somebody tell this underachiever that he needs to swing the stinkin bat to prove his worth in the big-leagues.
He is one inning of outs all by himself.

While we were waiting
for Conan to start, we caught the sports segment on NBC. They showed CY’s botched play in center, and Byrnesie “comforting” him…I imagined a bit of a dialogue that I decided I’d share with you all.
CY “;akldfj;aldkjfa;ldkjf;aksdjf;akdfj;akdfjadl;fjaskdjfuckkda;jfkldjaf;lkdsjf;akdj;dkf”

Hence
Why evaluating a player by only one small portion of their play is not the greatest idea.

Strikeouts and an inability to otherwise get on base is "minor" portion for a position player?
Hitting and getting on base is rather large part of baseball for position players.
By the way, Kishi, what do Young, Byrnes, and Reynolds do that has been so successful for the DBacks this year outside of striking out and not getting on base? Seeing that it is such a “minor” part of player evaluations. What is the “MAJOR” positive contribution of each of these individuals?
Outside of a TV show for entertainment purposes…

Reynolds
has the second highest OPS+, of 126
An explanation of what OPS+ tries to measure.
It’s not deniable that Brynes and Young have contributed little to the Diamondbacks this year offensively, but it is a blatant lie to claim that Reynolds hasn’t contributed positively this year.

Reynolds?
That bum isn’t do anything except for being one of our best hitters and filling in at a position where we’ve been hard-hit by injuries. What a loser!
Evaluating Reynolds just on strike outs is like handing out the Cy Young solely on wins.

.360
is actually fairly high, especially on our team…. and his slugging is VERY impressive. If he keeps on getting on base at a .360 clip, I couldn’t care less if he struck out 250×. (And he’s actually not leading the majors, either)

Yeah, one of our best hitters.
You want to argue it? Then explain to me how Drew, Montero, Snyder, Whitesell, or Ojeda is hitting better. Tell me why Reynolds .360 OBP is somehow unacceptable, when almost everyone else on the team is below that. Feel free to elaborate on why the guy who leads the team in home runs, RBIs, stolen bases, and walks isn’t contributing enough to this team’s offensive to meet up to your standards.
Go on. Explain it, I’m really curious about this.

If you think about it- which, obviously, you’re refusing to- it actually makes some sense. Wins aren’t the only measure of a pitcher. Strike outs aren’t the only measure of a hitter. If you’d like, I’m sure someone could draw a chart for you.

Attended the game
to show Randy some love, but something unusual pregame caught more of my attention. Not the empty seats and shuttered upper deck kiosks – that’s old news. The Dbacks “take the field” in response to a call to arms from Mike & Vanessa, and last night, after Vanessa shreiked, there was a pause, then Doug and a teammate trotted out. Another considerable lull, then a few more guys. A third intermission, and the rest straggled out.
I’m not one for false hustle or mindless protocol, and I’ve certainly seen a guy or two lag behind the pack, but this was different and looked and felt weird. There could be a number of explanations, and I dont wanna speculate, at least not until my foil hat comes back from the shop (I’m having the antennae polished to enhance reception) – but at the moment I cant think of any reasons that are particularly encouraging.
