Diamondbacks call up lefty Schlereth
Daniel Schlereth has been called up from AA Mobile. Doug Slaten has been sent to AAA Reno.
Schlereth has a 1.42 ERA for Mobile with 21 strikeouts in 19 innings.
Slaten had a 6.35 ERA and had allowed opponents to bat .320 against him (including an impressive .375 for lefties), so it shouldn't be too hard for the highly-touted Schlereth to do better.

Incidentally,
I did NOT expect to see Danny Schlereth in the bigs this year.

In fact,
UA is 98th in the US.
ASU is….. errr, still 3rd tier.

Overall?
Check a few individual programs, I’ll hold up ASU’s electrical engineering program to many top notch schools on the planet. Their Material Science program I’d rank pretty high too.
But, that is NOT important, after all. BIGGER is better! so says The Crow…. {{ picture an emoticon here rolling eyes }}

Yeah, overall.
US New And World Report spanks you like The Simpsons did. (I would include a video here, but YouTube has gone completely corporate) Enjoy trying to rank your planetary science against ours. :-D
Also, Sean Miller is going to kick your ass.

ASU has a pitcher that
is being highly touted. i thught I heard someone speculate that he might be the Dbacks first pick in the upcoming draft too.

MLB has Arizona drafting Mike Leake from ASU with the 16th pick.
They say that they’ll be lucky if he is there when they pick.
Ehh well it would follow the trend from last year...
… of taking polished pitchers who have low ceilings but would be on the fast-track to the majors. Schlereth and Wade Miley were our first two picks last year, and both were just that kind of pitcher. It makes a bit of sense since we’ve already got two aces (Webb, Haren) and two guys who are high-risk, high-reward guys (Scherzer, Parker). So since we’re likely to have at least three if not all four of them as good-to-great starters in three years at the top of the rotation, we’re making sure to have guys to fill in at the bottom of the rotation, and frankly, Mike Leake as a fifth starter is a great option. Honestly, though, I’d have enough confidence in Scherzer/Parker/Miley/Augenstein/Wes Roemer to supply three starters, and would try to find a way to get a position player, because we’re clearly in need of bats. Maybe even a catcher. There’s a HS kid Max Stassi who can swing the stick behind the plate, much like Miguel Montero has failed to do. Enough tries you’ve got to get it right at some point…

Do you
really think Scherzer is gonna stick in the rotation?
