Reynolds & Byrnes Have Got To Go!!

Mark (I couldn't hit a baseball if it was the size of a watermelon and sitting on a tee) Reynolds needs to go back to Kentucky and raise horses or grow tobacco or do  something productive.  And he should take Eric (The  Corn Flake)  Byrnes with him who could act as his agent  because neither one of these guys should be allowed to wear a baseball uniform, call themselves baseball players and be paid for what they don't do.  Pathetic.

Oh, yeah, we totally did, and you ignored all attempts to discuss the topic. So, is that going to continue? I mean, why are you talking crap about Mark “batting .344/.447/.750 over the last seven days” Reynolds when Chris Young is still looking awful at the plate lately?

We Did?

I didn’t realize we were going to discuss this topic. 344 in seven days! Wow. How about the other 40 or 50? The ball does get in the way of his bat sometimes. Last night he looked so pathetic. He did manage to dribble one back to the pitcher. As least Young can catch the ball.

by Ohshamus on May 28, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Reynolds can catch the ball also....

his problem is throwing the ball to first, that’s what gets him all the errors. Reynolds is one of the streakier hitters in baseball right now but when he gets on fire he is as good as anybody and I don’t want to risk trading him and have him become something great and we get crap for him.

As for Byrnes, he won’t be going anywhere with that 11.6 million dollar contract he has this season and it’s not worth talking about since we talk about it daily.

by Pyromnc on May 28, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Reynolds can't throw.......LOL......so lets keep him....we'll petition the NL for the DH.

Great idea.

Ok...

Over the entire season:
Reynolds = .257/.351/.539 = OPS .890 = OPS+ 123 [league average = 100]
Young = .172 /.219/.311 = OPS .530 = OPS+ 33
Sure, Young is a better defender, but is it worth 360 points of OPS? No. I guess leading the team in home-runs is due to the ball ‘getting in the way of his bat too’? Sure: he has some painful at-bats and needs to make more contact with the ball, but is still only 25. Don’t forget, little more than two years ago, he was playing Double-A. Oh, and he’s leading the team in steals too, and is on pace for a 44 HR, 34 SB season.

As for Byrnes, who do we suggest we replace him with? Alex Romero? Your opinion on these players has been made clear before, and that’s fair enough – but if you’re not willing to stick around, make the case and listen to the opposing evidence, then you why should we listen to you? So, please: explain why you think Reynolds, in particular, is not fit to wear a baseball uniform?

Ok...Wait and see..

Wait till the end of the season to see how things turn out. If I am wrong then I apologize. - “but if you’re not willing to stick around” - I didn’t realize that I left. — " why should we listen to you?" - You don’t have to. -“why you think Reynolds, in particular, is not fit to wear a baseball uniform?”— It’s just my opinion from what I have observed.

We did.

You posted the topic yourself.

And the other 40 or 50? You mean the whole season, that stretch where he’s outhitting 90% of the team? Over the season so far, he’s second on the team to only Justin Upton in OPS+ right now for the whole season- so why aren’t you calling for everyone else to be kicked off the team, too? Stephen Drew’s got 4 errors in 24 games, to Reynolds’s 7 in 45, and Drew’s only hitting .209- why aren’t you calling for him to be kicked off the team?

"We can plant wild flowers on roof tops and be unorthodox urban honey pioneers."

by kishi on May 28, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably calling for Drew to be kicked off of the team....

because of what he did last season. I bet you if Drew doesn’t have that great season last year he would probably be part of the “Reynolds & Byrnes Have Got To Go!!” on it would say "Reynolds, Byrnes, & Drew Have Got To Go!!

by Pyromnc on May 28, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Which really is a lousy reason

Drew is slumping, while Reynolds is improving on his numbers from last season- that’s like giving Byrnes a huge contract because of one good year. =)

by Marc Fournier on May 28, 2009 5:17 AM EDT reply actions

That's a big jump

I don’t want to get rid of Reynolds, although I can completely understand why many D-Backs fans are frustrated with him. Like Kishi says, he’s hitting well lately. It appears that he’s making better adjustments at the plate. But his defense is still kinda ugly, and it’s easy to remember last year’s Error and Strikeout King every time he bobbles a catch or flings a ball past the first baseman.

Byrnes? Right now he’s the lesser of several evils. That’s never a recipe for happiness.

The best I can do is “sounds to me like someone is an angry fan”.

Chin up, Ohshamus! Reynolds is batting well and he’s learning to hit to contact. Assuming (hoping? begging? praying?) he sticks at first base, we’ll likely see better defense too. I can’t think of many nice things to say about Byrnsie’s performance. He’s a gold-plated, diamond-studded patch. But it’s kinda nice to have a designated whipping boy.

ESPN seems to think Reynolds is good.
Reynolds came into play Wednesday tied for second in the majors in strikeouts. Nothing new there; he led the majors last year in K’s. Oh, but did we also mention he’s currently in the top 10 in homers and in the top 20 in steals. You just have to ignore all those K’s and realize this guy is still a productive fantasy option.

This came from an ESPN fantasy news email, saying Reynolds should be picked up. I doubt that they would recommend owners to pick him up if he sucked.

Reynolds can hit the ball. He can also strike out a lot.

Two sides to every story bro

by edbigghead on May 28, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

The problem with Reynolds is....

he is not clutch at all. It seems to me, that most of his homers, come with no one on base, and we are either ahead by 10, or down by 10. He never (ok, rarely) seems to hit a homer when we are down by 1 or 2, and thier are men on. That seems to be where Tony Clark and Chris Snyder do best (which seems odd to me).
It just seems when Chris is trying to hit homers, is when he sucks the most. The other night, both he and Tracy seemed to be swining for the fences, when all we needed was a blooper single to win the game.
That is where my fruestration is with him. I am not going to say he sucks, and can’t hit, beucase he can, he just doesn’t hit when we need him to the most.

by parrotheadkrm on May 28, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

His home run rate is almost identical

He’s averaging exactly a home run per 13 at-bats with the bases empty, and a home run per 12.6667 at bats with runners on. As for clutch, well, he is batting .364 with a 1.205 OPS in 28 plate appearances in late and close situations.

Fabulous site. I could lose myself in there for hours. And often do. :-) Specifically
Arizona 2009 team page
From there, you can click on any player to see his career numbers. Once you’ve done that, across the top you’ll see an option, SPLITS – hovering over that will give you the option to pick a particular year or get the career numbers. Everything from how a player has hit in every park, to how he’s done after getting ahead 2-0 in the count.

Have fun!

baseball-reference and fangraphs are the two best baseball sites on the web (subscription or free)

yay..1st post for me.. here it goes.

Saying getting Rid of Renyolds is just dumb. Byrnes..you may have a case..but thats not gonna happen, so deal with it.

He hits…Kid has power. And about him not driving in many runs..and alot of solo hits and shots..well, look where he is in the lineup. Has Upton in front of him takin all the RBI’s. Ha. Not complaning about that. I would like to see the line up a bit different and see how it changes things. And Mark at 1st alot more. As said above, most errors are due to the throws to 1st.. Mark is a great fielder, already has some nice pics at 1st. And he will learn..Matt williams helped alot at 3rd.. its obvious..Maybe Grace could show him some stuff at 1st. But we need his bat in the lineup..and more important..his speed. he has walked alot more this yr. already. And now Pitchers knowing he is a running threat makes them pitch with that in their heads. Upton and Mark are the New bash Bro’s and it needs to stay that way. Drew is not a clean up hitter, he should be batting 2nd. Sorry for the long post, but ya.. my .02

By the way..look at the #1 team on yahoo fantasy baseball.. Upton and renyolds are on it.

Line up FTW
1. Lopez/Young (Ya, i said it, young)
2. Drew
3. J-Up
4. Renyolds
5. Roberts
6.Parra
7. Lopez/Young/Byrnes (depends who starts)
8. Snyder (he plays better when everyday catcher..keep it that way)
9. Pitcher

Freeze it..and make a popsicle

Welcome!

Never apologize for long posts. :-)

Reynolds is young, cheap and already above average [105 OPS+]. What’s not to like?

Well, I give you his defense… And those pesky strikeouts… And the occasionally ugly at-bat… Hell, I am as infuriated as anyone sometimes, but I doubt there are a dozen better-hitting young players in the majors right now [and one of those is Justin Upton]

Okay....

obviously, I don’t REALLY need to do more to defend Reynolds here, but…..

are you on crack??

You mean, the Mark Reynolds with the 2nd highest OPS+ (126) on the team?? The Mark Reynolds with the .354 OBP and the .550 slugging %?? You mean the guy with 4 SBs and 4 HRs more than anyone else on the team?? The guy who, along with Upton, has 12 RBIs more than anyone else on the team??

Dude….. I TOTALLY want some of whatever you’re smoking.

Lets just wait till the fat lady sings........

So I don’t get scolded anymore by not posting/defending/monitoring my opinion and since everone has there own opinion I say we just wait and see how all this drama plays out and where Mr. Reynolds and his obp and ops and avg and sbs and stps and btus and rsvps and all the other “statistics” that have been brought to our attention end up. Remember there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. I stand by my opinion that he is a lousy baseball player and when the fat lady does sing he and the team will be resting in peace.

PS. I don’t smoke.

I think this group has been indulgent towards your post.

The fact you think Reynolds sucks PROVES YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. Your “opinion” is NULL and VOID because it’s NOT BASED ON ANYTHING. You don’t have statistics to support what you’re saying? Fine. Then at least make a LUCID ARGUMENT rather than insulting Reynolds and saying he looks crummy any time you’ve “observed” him. How many times is that? Three? If your goal was to see your own name, you probably could have done better than this.
