Calling all Tucson Snakepitters.... (and Phoenix ones, too)

As you know, Tucson lost the Sidewinders to Reno this year, and it's the first time we've been without a PCL baseball team since 1969. :-( That's bad.

However, Jay Zucker, the former owner of the Sidewinders, has gone out on a limb and opened an expansion franchise of the independent Golden Baseball League that's going to play at Hi Corbett Field, just like the AAA Toros. :-) That's good.

The new Tucson Toros have a lot of Tucson baseball history to live up to. With the exception of an eleven-year gap between 1958 and 1969, Tucson has had a professional baseball team every year since 1915. Thanks to Mr. Zucker, that's a streak that won't be broken this year.

Although we won't have the privilege anymore of seeing tomorrow's Dbacks play intown, we've still got pro baseball, and that's something. I'm planning on going to the new Toros' franchise opener next Thursday, May 21st, at 7PM, against the Chico Outlaws, and if that doesn't work for you, the Friday night game is at 7PM too. I'll be there as well. I've mentioned going to the games with luckycc and Bcawz already, but I know for a fact we've got more Tucson Snakepitters here -- both lurkers and otherwise. You know who you are. This is a chance to get to know other local members of the site and enjoy baseball together with other fans who'll be just as into the game as you are. Not the exclusionary type, I also wanted to invite ALL Snakepitters who might be able to make it, if any of you Phoenix-area 'Pitters are willing to make the 90 minute drive down from the Valley. Tickets are $5 for General Admission, $8 for Upper Reserved, and, if you're a high roller, $10 for VIP Box Seats right behind home plate.

Let's give our newest pro baseball team a warm welcome in the friendly confines of Hi Corbett.

For more information, the Toros' official site is, logically enough, TucsonToros.com.

Hey man

so um… yeah, about that game on the 22nd. Well, it turns out I just might not be in town that weekend (and I already had plans on the 21st which I cant change). Besides, who wants to see Chico? I am all down for the OC the following weekend.

Hey, if you're outta town that's fine, man.

Even if nobody else can come, I’ll be there. I figured it would be more fun if we got together and then maybe went out together afterwards.

I will make one, promise.

Whoa

I just looked at the schedule and… Yuma has a baseball team!? Dang.

I don’t think I can be bothered with driving down to Tucson anytime soon but I hope to check out one of the games. Perhaps we can schedule a gathering come the end of the season?

Well, towards the end of the season

we’ve got Snakepitfestapaloozathon. I was thinking about an early-season Tucson-based get-together, but open to all Snakepitters.

Speaking of Which

Are tickets still available for that? I noticed that the comments had been disabled.

I'll Most Likely Be Joining You Guys

I’ll buy the tickets as soon as I have that day cleared from my schedule.

Glad to have you!

And

I can’t make it down for any of the early season games. With my wedding, honeymoon, moving, school, and all that jazz I just don’t have the time for it. I think I could maybe make a trip in August around my birthday though.

i think we'd be up for it

But a Sunday game would be more likely, what with me working Tue-Sat. Do they have those, and if so, are they afternoon or evening ones? I like the idea of making a trip and staying the night down there, then going to Cracker Barrel for breakfast on the way back. :-)

They open the season

with a four game set against Chico, so Sunday the 24th is the series finale. Just FYI, Jim, I do have a couch, but it’s very small. :-D

During that series,

it’s an evening game, incidentally. All four games start at 7PM.

Only 7 Sunday games at home. May 24th and 31st. June 21st. Then July 5th and 26th and the last two Sundays of the year (for the Toros), August 23rd and 30th.

Sundays are dollar dog day.

I'm still interested

Don’t know if I can do anything after depending on how my schedule at work turns out, but even if it means being a zombie at work the next day, I’m going to watch me some baseball. Might see if some friends are interested in going – definitely helps so I don’t have to freak out about when and where the bus runs down there.

Finding a way to get some of us Tucson people to watch a Dbacks game some time might be fun too.

Oh, fo' sho'.

That’s my next project: to find a fun bar that shows Dbacks games that we can maybe hit up on Saturday nights or something.

Yeah,

we’ve been trying to find somewhere, even though I wouldn’t be able to drink. The closest we’ve gotten is the Buffalo Wild Wings over on this (bfe east) side of town.

Which Buffalo Wild Wings?

I thought there was only one in town. Way east side; Harrison and Broadway I think.

by Bcawz on May 13, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought

there were two or three. Isn’t there one on Campbell, and another out on Silverbell or something?

Harrison and Broadway sounds about right, that’s way out on the east side where Emily lives. ;-)

I'm itching

to see me some live baseball (no, seriously. every time I watch a game, it’s “when are we going to go to Phoenix to see a game?”), so I’ll try to prod Zephon out of his hiding place and see what we can do. =)

would I be the only one to make you feel good about yourself?? Hmmmm….. not sure I like that. :P

Yeah.

You’re the only one invited.

Sounds like a cool idea

I probably won’t be able to make it down this month, but I’d like to take the trip at some point over the summer, and I’ll be sure to let you know when beforehand.

Change of schedule

I got scheduled to work a very rare night shift on Thurs, so I can’t make it that night, but if anyone’s going on Fri, I’m going to try and go then – if I can talk some friends into going with me.

Correction

I thought I might be able to get some friends to go with me, but for various reasons, that’s not going to work. Busing down there, when I’ve never been to Hi-Corbett before and don’t know where the bus stop is or how close to the park it is, probably isn’t a great option, so I’m probably going not going to be able to make it.

Wes and I

can’t decide if we’re going to be there Thursday or Friday, but probably Thursday.
