Minor league report - A+

I continue my DBacks minor league report with a look at Advanced A Visalia Rawhide. It's a team loaded with talent from our last two drafts, and they tied the Cal league record with a 10-0 start. They cooled off somewhat since then, but they sit at the top of the north division with a 13-5 record.

Batters:

The Good:

  • Baseball America regards Colin Cowgill as the Diamondbacks' second-best outfield prospect (No. 9 overall). Cowgill led the Northwest League with 11 home runs last summer despite being promoted to the Midwest League after just 20 games. His overall line between the two levels was .264/.366/.479. He has legitimate power and a great eye. His line to start the season is .318/.444/.652 with 4 HR in 81 PA. His BABIP is .395 meaning his batting average is likely in for a regression, but with his eye and power, he's a legitimate prospect.
  • Ollie Linton is a top-of-the-order left handed hitter, posting a .363 on-base percentage last summer in A ball. He is also considered a good defender and has speed to burn. His line to start the season is .305/.468/.824 and it's not influenced by a high BABIP. His BB rate is 20% and his K rate is 8.5%, both terrific numbers.
  • 1B Ryne White is regarded as the Diamondbacks' best first-base prospect after opening his career last year hitting .289 with seven HR between stops in the Pioneer and Midwest Leagues. His stats so far are .317/.414/.400 with a high .396 BABIP.
  • C Ed Easley started the season well after a poor showing last year (.247/.313/.336). He is hitting .250/.451/.346 in 71 PA with a low BABIP, walking in every fourth PA. In fact, he has 17 walks compared with 13 hits so far.

The Bad:

  • After posting good numbers in South Bend last year (.276/.314/.414), middle infielder Taylor Harbin is off to a slow start this year, hitting .250/.308/.347 in his first 79 PA.
  • C/DH Konrad Schmidt hit .288/.340/.372 between two levels of A ball last year, but his success hasn't translated to this year yet, where he's hitting just .226/.305/.264 in 59 PA.
  • After hitting .302/.351/.439 in 231 PA in Rookie league in '08, 3B Kyle Greene had a rough start in '09, hitting just .207/.288/.328 in 66 PA, striking out 38% of the time.

Pitchers:

The Good:

  • RHP Jarrod Parker pitched so well he earned a promotion to AA after just four stats. His line? 19 IP, 21 K, 4 BB, 0.95 ERA. It seems the front office is limiting his innings and pitch totals, which is the right thing to do at this point. In fact, last season in South Bend, he was only allowed to throw fastballs, and he still struck out a batter per inning. It will surprise no one if he's pitching for a spot in the big league rotation next spring.
  • However, reliever William Spottiswood has outdone Parker, earning a promotion to AAA for his trouble. He followed his sterling work in A ball last year (64 IP, 58K, 16 BB, 1 HR, 2.11 ERA) with an even better start this year. His line of 8 IP, 9K, 1BB, 2ER was enough for him to skip a level, although if you read my AA report, you know that club is loaded with hot relief arms, so maybe that's the reason. He has allowed a couple of runs in 2 IP in his debut for Reno last night, but added another 2 strikeouts.
  • Righty starter Wes Roemer, a sandwich pick in 2007, hasn't had a great year last year (4.59 ERA in 162.2 IP) for Visalia, so he got a chance to repeat this level, and so far, the results are there. 4 starts, 19.2 IP, 12K, 6 BB, 0 HR for a 1.83 ERA. His K:BB could be higher, but he hasn't allowed a home run this year after allowing 25 last year.
  • Another promising starter is Josh Collmenter, who is in his first year at A+ after two great seasons in A ball (2.71 ERA in 2007, 3.41 ERA in 2008). After 3 starts this year, his line is 16IP, 16K, 4BB, 1HR, 2.81 ERA.
  • Jordan Norberto is a young lefty relief arm with good stuff (296 K in 290 IP in his career) and poor control (138 BB). He pitched a 100 A ball innings in both '07 and '08 and had little success, with an ERA around 5.30. This year, it's more of the same (12 K, 6 BB in 11 IP) but the results look better because he allowed 0 HR to keep his ERA at 3.27. It's hard to see him keep this up unless he can cut down on free passes.
  • Brian Henry is a right handed bullpen arm coming off a good season in A ball (3.10 ERA in 90 IP). He started the year on fire, punching out 14 batters in 11.2 to help himself to a 2.31 ERA. The 10.9 K/9 rate is a huge improvement on his career numbers to date, and it'll be a challenge for him to sustain it.

The Bad:

  • Leyson Septimo, our outfielder turned lefty power pitcher can bring the heat (51 K in 48.1 IP in his short career as a pitcher) but he's still learning to locate his pitches (41 BB). Needless to say, the results are not there. After posting an ERA of 5.49 last year, he's at 4.91 after 7.1 IP this year (7 K, 8 BB). Throwing heat in the upper 90s as a lefty is enough to make scouts drool, but unless he learns to pitch, I can't see him being an asset.
  • After a good year in A ball in '08 (3.44 ERA in 115 IP), lefty reliever Tom Layne started off slowly this year, with an ERA of 6.75 through 9.1 IP. He is not helping himself with a 4:5 K:BB.
  • Chase Christianson is another relief pitcher off to a slow start. After a pedestrian season last year at this level (5.95 ERA in 115 IP), his ERA is at 7.27 after 8.2 IP this year. He's done a good job not allowing a homer yet this year, after allowing 14 last year, but a K:BB of 6:4 is not good enough.

Well, the Visalia club just got a little less interesting with the promotion of Parker, but nevertheless, there are some interesting players to keep an eye on in the future. I'll conclude this exercise with a look at our A ball affiliate in South Bend.

This year, I guess

I have no idea what that’s about, but the minors are weird like that.

I did not mention Pat McAnaney above, but he’s certainly a guy to look out for. An 8th round pick in ’08, he threw 50 innings between Yakima and Missoula with an ERA of 0.89. He pitched five scoreless innings last night (3H, 1BB, 7K) to bring his line to: 4 starts, 3-0, 2.70 ERA, 20K, 7BB in 20 IP.

Septimo and Christianson completed the shutout with two hitless innings apiece, but combined for 5 walks and only one K.

On the batting side, Linton, Schmidt and Greene had 2 hits apiece, while Cowgill was 1-3 with a SF in a 6-0 win for Visalia.

Visalia Oaks to Rawhide

As a member of the Visalia Ranch Hands formerly the Visalia Oaks Booster club I can tell you that supposedly sometime last year the management did a survey asking for names for a new team to go with the new (upgraded) stadium. SUPPOSEDLY, the Rawhide won out.

But hey, I never got surveyed! Doesn’t my opinion count? I am a life-time fan of Visalia Baseball! Oh, well we are NOW the Rawhide and the colors match the D-Backs so I am happy.

Too bad, AJ Hinch was here the other day and a week later off goes Jarrod Parker to Moblie (AA). Oh, well I thought he might stay longer to help the team make the play-offs this year.

Also, Billy Spottiswood temporary promotion to AAA Reno was just for one game. He was dropped off on Sunday Night in Fresno while the Rawhide came home from Modesto on the bus. Reno was in town to play the Fresno Grizzlies. Spotty (as he is known) pitched well two the first two batters he faced and then got lit up. But, what do you expect from a Single A pitcher making his first appearance in AAA. Spotty, will be fine and is now back in Visalia. I sure hope he isn’t shell shocked from his outing in AAA. Lastly, it was nice to see some Visalia players at the Fresno Grizzlies game to support Spotty.

Fight on Rawhide. And I am OUT!

Thanks for the info

For some reason, it’s really hard to find minor league news.

No Problem

Since I go to a lot of Visalia games I will try to keep you posted on the Rawhide’s progress. Last year my wife and I adopted Evan Frey and Mark Hallberg so if you hearing anything about them please post it. I check their stats almost every night. Frey has cooled off and Hallberg looks like he needs a hitting coach to help him adjust to AA pitching. AA is loaded right now with great talent! It is better than the Pacific Coast League.

Future Backs - Rawhide

I would be glad to keep you all updated on the Rawhide this year. I just stumbled on this website and it is great to see that there are so many D-Backs fan that love the Baby-Backs as well as the Big Leaguers.

As for Evan (Frey) and Mark (Hallberg) the booster club has an adopt a player program that helps guys on the team get familiar with the area, provide a meal or just give them a ride if they need it. All too often guys come to the team with no car or are sent to the team without the bare necessities. That is where we come in. Last year we went to a lot of away games (Modesto, Stockton, San Jose, Bakersfield) so if the guys ever needed anything we would make sure the got it. They are great kids and I hope they both make it to the show. Mark was MVP of the Hawaiian League this Winter and Evan played in the Arizona Fall League (which I don’t have to tell you is a huge honor for a guy that only played high A ball).

I will keep you updated on the roster and the players as often as I can.

Peace.

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

Bullpen Blows It - Sound Familar

The Rawhide bullpen let the game tonight slip through their fingers. This is becoming a ridiculous theme throughout the D-Backs organization. What is up with the Bullpens?

Tom Gordon melts down in his first appearance in Milwaukee. Jon Rauch can’t get anybody out. And we let Juan Cruz go because of a contract dispute. I know revenue is down but, can we buy a solid reliever?

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Well, back to the Rawhide Game last night. Spotty (Spottiswood) fresh off his AAA outing on Monday with the Reno Aces blew it against the Ports. Spotty relieved Bryan Henry in the 9th, he already has 3 saves on the year.

Henry pitched 2 and 1/3 of an inning and only gave up 1 run. Spotty came in and immediately gave up a solo shot to Matthew Spencer. The next better Todd Johnson doubled to center. Spotty then struck out the next hitter. Spotty then induced a ground ball to second, which moved the runner to third. I thought he was going to get out of inning unscathed. Then he allows Dante Love to single up the middle and Johnson scored game over!

The big highlight was Ollie Linton who just keeps kicking butt in the leadoff position. He has 21 hits in 19 games so far this season. He is a great table setter for the Rawhide. If you like Mark Grace’s philosophy of: Get’m On, Get’m Over and Get’m In, then this is the guy you want leading off the inning. I love small ball! I would like to see him learn how to read pitchers a little better because he has great speed and is a threat to steal (4 steals in 11 attempts).

The Rawhide return home for a weekend series with the Lancaster Jethawks. It looks like the weather might rain out Saturday and Sunday’s game. I will keep you up to date as it weekend progresses.

Rope, throw, and brand ’em –RAWHIDE!

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

Lancaster vs. Rawhide (Double Header - Sunday, May 3, 2009)

Because of a rainout on Friday today was a double-header. Lancaster Jethawks (Houston Astro’s) were in town to face our Rawhide.

Player of the Day: Ollie Linton continued his tear through the Cal League. He went 4 for 6 combined on the day with a double and 3 RBI’s. Ollie’s Dad was in the stands from LA to watch his son be the star of the day. The only down side was Ollie was caught stealing in the bottom of the 1st of the first game. He still needs to learn how to read pitchers better because he got a late jump. (Brett Butler needs to work with this kid, send him to AAA-Reno).

Game 1: Newly added Pitcher Christian Beltre started the first game and pitched well through three innings. He allowed one run in the first and one in the 3rd. He threw a couple of wild pitches in the first but then settled down. Another bright spot was that the Rawhide pounded out 12 hits in the game.

Game 2: Taylor Harbin was the star of this game driving in 3 runs this his towering Homerun to Left (It was about 12 feet above the fence, what a shot). Harbin finished the day 2 for 3. Spotty relieved Layne and pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. Dietz earned his 5th save of the year.

Roll Rawhide

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

A question

What happened to Michael Mee? He had a good season in Visalia last year but he’s nowhere to be seen now.

by paqs on May 5, 2009 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heh.....

it’s a little weird to see our prospects playing Lancaster, since the JetHawks used to be our A+ team.

Michael Mee

He voluntarily retired on April 6th. I guess he felt he was done with baseball. I had a solid bat and showed promise.

Hmmm.... interesting.

And a bit sad, too.

Or, mature, if he felt like he had something better than baseball to move on to.

Thanks for the info

It’s interesting .. contrast that with a guy like Zavada who works in the winter but still keeps the dream alive during the baseball season.

I assume you all read the NY Times piece?

Loved it. Summed up baseball.

Rawhide On The Move

With the call up of Bryan Augenstein from Double AA to start against the Reds on Wednesday the Visalia Rawhide sent Wes Roemer (3-1, 2.05 ERA with Visalia) to Mobile to take his place.

FYI – Baybear Fans Roemer shaves his head and needs a cheering section called the “Roemer’s Domers!” He is a great kid with a live fastball. However, sometimes he gets flustered on the mound. He has done a lot of growing up this year and I think he is ready for this move.

Also added to the Teams Roster lately has been SP Trevor Harden (from South Bend) and OF Daniel Rodriguez (from Yakima). Rodriguez will fill-in for Greg Thomson while he is on the DL for a wrist injury.

Ollie Linton was, “Player of the Home Stand” for last home stand.

Nothing else for now. Will keep you up to date.

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

Also

Pat McAnaney has been named the league’s pitcher of the week after throwing 2 gems.

by paqs on May 12, 2009 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great Debut - Tough Luck Loser

Trevor Harden made his Single High A debut this afternoon. His first inning of work was something to watch. He damn near let the game get away in the first with two wild pitches with runners on. But, after some help from his defense he settled down and pitched great for 5 more innings only giving up a solo-shot homerun in the 6th. He showed unusual mental toughness on the mound.

It was just too bad that the Rawhide couldn’t really get anything going, with their 4 hits. To Craig Clark’s (San Jose Giants Pitcher) credit he dazzled us through 6 innings only giving up 3 hits and striking out 9.

Catcher Jhoan Pimentel also made his Single High A debut going 1 for 2 at the plate.

Transaction Note: Catcher Sean Coughlin was transferred to Mobile yesterday. For those fans in Mobile be prepared to watch this guy give up stolen base after stolen base because he has terrible footwork behind the dish.

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

by SnakebitForever on May 14, 2009 3:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think

They’ll mainly play him in first base, with Skelton and Mercado already there, and they have a hole at first with Byrne moving to AAA.

Bullpens, Bullpens, Bullpens

It seems that the Hot Topic around the Diamondbacks Entire System has been “Bullpens.”

In Visalia it has been no different. I have seen the “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” side of this bullpen that sometimes I have to do a double-take to make sure I am not watching the D-Backs ’pen on TV.

Take for instance this past Sunday. SP Patrick McAnaney goes out and throws 5 innings and only give up one earned run. Then he turns it over the game over to the pen and RP Bryan Henry relieves him and gives up 4 runs in 2/3’s of an inning.

Luckily, the Rawhide rally to tie the game and then win the game in the 10th with a homerun and a triple.

An interesting Stat thus far has been the fact that the arms in the bullpen have given up 71 Earned Runs in approximately 188 innings pitched.

This is an average of 2.6 EARNED RUNS PER INNING!

Wow, now there is a tale of the tape. With all this the Rawhide are still in first place.

Roll Rawhide!

Peace & Love, Peace & Love.

by SnakebitForever on May 27, 2009 3:49 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

You got your math wrong.

71 runs in 188 innings is 0.38 runs per innings, or a 3.4 ERA, which is very good.

2.6 runs per inning would mean Visalia would never ever win a game.
