Fire BoMel. It's time to change.
Let's start it. Let's make some noise. I don't care if it's "too early in the season", better now than later when we'll probably crying over one more frustating season.
Ok, our record under his tenure as our manager isnt that bad; we lead the league in days at first place since 2007; he managed us to a postseason, etc. But I (and a lot of people) just can't take it anymore. If 2008 was awful, my poor english can't find any other word to describe the bad feeling that watching BoMel(and his staff, lets not forget) manage this team is.
First, he decides to flip-flop our batters over the lineup sheet EVERY single game, no matter how good or how bad the hitter is. I just can't count how many times he left our hottest hitter on the bench "because he's not a good matchup against that leftie, or that ace".
Then, he watches his team go hitless through 5, his ace is on the mound with a small deficit and a low pitch count, what does he do? he pulls off the pitcher for a pinch hitter that's even colder with the bat... don't need to say the result.
And what about the bullpen moves? I know we can't blame him alone, almost every bullpen arm we've got sucks, but still, let's face it, even my grandma, who don't even knows baseball exists, would not put a guy like Schoneweis to face a right handed batter; and she wouldnt continue to give chances for a rebound to a pitcher who can't stop sucking since the very first day he signed with us. But BoMel? When the game is in the line, the very first thing he does is call to the bullpen for this kind of pitchers.
The team cant run, hit for the gaps, bunt to move runners, or even make contact with breaking balls. Our hitters are always trying to hit a 5-run HR. Yes, they are not doing their jobs, but most important for me, the coaching staff isnt doing anything to change it, aparently.
I can't take it anymore, it's very frustating to watch this team suck day in day out. We may have the best pure talent on the field, but our guys are not living up for the expectations, they are not busts or something else, it's just about showing them the right way to do things, and our manager (and his staff) really can't do it. Taking Upton as an example: isnt he a 'potential' five-tool player? So, explain me why they don't send him to steal a base? He is always trying to hit a HR, isnt he supposed to hit for average too? I just can't see a brilliant future for Upton playing for us, under this management he's about to be the new Quentin.
(wow, I'm a little lost already, but let's finish)
Fire BoMel. Please.
Let's try someone else. Maybe a guy like Gibson or even Tony Clark, lol.
And let's reformulate the coaching staff too, I'm pretty sure there are good guys over the minors that could do a good job, with special atention for the hiting coah part of it.
Final note: We should keep guys like Gibson and Price(great pitching coach, can't blame him for Rauch's failure), but the rest of the staff needs a change NOW.
That's it, I'm sorry not being able to express that well in english, but I tried. Kishi will follow later to finish it in a better way, I expect.
Fire BoMel!

Let's see
I agree with the overall sentiment. He should be fired, and so should the hitting coach.
I don’t care who hits where in the lineup (there’s not much of a difference) but the constant changes are frustrating.
Tony Clark needs to go. I get the veteran leadership thing, they can hire him as a bench coach or whatever. Whitesell can’t do a worse job. It’s not possible. He’s destroying AAA pitching for the second year running. It’s no guarantee he’ll do well, but he won’t hit .150, that’s for sure.
Rauch needs to go. He keeps sucking and Melvin just keeps sending him in. I don’t know what he expects. The only way Rauch can be effective at the moment is if we expand the outfield in Chase by about half a mile. I’m impressed with Gutierrez, and Vasquez has an ERA of 1.04 in 8.2 AAA innings. Again, he could tank, but at least he won’t give up a homer per inning. Gordon should be back soon but I have no idea what to expect there.
But please, stolen bases are overrated, and bunts are quite simply free outs.
As for Upton, you need to keep in mind this year should have been his first in AAA. He was promoted about two years early and he had a good year last year. I don’t know who we can blame that on…

hum, I see
I was using Upton as a simple example of the how bad we manage our young players, you are right, we cant blame him, but I still think he could be better under a proper staff.
Stolen bases are not the most important thing on a team, but it’s a plus. We have like 5 guys that could be running WAY more than they do.
As for the bunts, I was just trying to mention some “small ball” aspects of the game that this team never uses.

Yeah
With our .250 OBP, I don’t think we can afford to risk outs on the bases. Small ball, more often than not, is just wrong.
I don’t know what’s wrong with our hitters, but they seem to swing at neck high pitches and pitches in the dirt, but lay off pitches down the middle. It’s bizzare.
The team had no problem firing the last hitting coach in 2007, I don’t know why not now. If nothing else, get a fresh perspective in there.

yeap, as Grace notes
they always take pitches “right down broadway” and do nothing… but they go for the bad ones.
In one game vs the Gnats, Upton hit for a single a ball that bounced BEFORE the homeplate.. when I saw that I was like “WTF? CRICKET”

I can understand them not hitting Lincecum, and even Randy, but the Randy Wolf thing was embarrassing.
He literally threw about 20 curveballs at 66 mph right down the fecking middle. All of them were taken for a strike.

Looked it up now
on Pitch fx.
He threw 19. 15 were strikes, and about 7-8 were bullseye.

I think the frustration with "small ball" stuff
goes beyond just stolen bases and bunts, which magnifies all of their shortcomings (although you’re right that with their current struggles just getting on base, pushing the limit is a recipe for disaster).
Two other categories that come to mind are runners on third with less than two out, and quality outs. The team’s struggles to get those guys on third home aren’t too surprising, considering how frequently they strike out collectively, but it becomes increasingly frustrating that they simply cannot put the ball in play (see: Tony Clark last night). And how many times this season have we seen a leadoff double go to waste because the hitters were unable to move the runner over to third with a groundout or flyout to the right side? Instead, it’s popout this, strikeout that.
I think the idea behind stolen bases is tied to a somewhat misguided idea: we stole a pretty high number of bases in 2007, and were successful; we stole a relatively low number of bases in 2008, and were not successful. But there are so many other factors in play with this team right now that running more simply isn’t the solution. Only a couple guys on the roster have great speed — we just have a collection of people with pretty good speed.

Stolen Bases
I don’t think you are going to see CY stealing too many bases this year. He’s been picked off first base twice in the last few games. Neither time was it a great move from the pitcher, CY just took off for second base on the first move the pitcher made.

i bloody hope so
I saw him getting waaaay too early of a jump earlier. but you’d think that him and upton will starting picking bases….if upton gets on them

Is Melvin the issue?
There’s really two aspects of management here: in-game and everything else, and the problem is, we can’t really comment with any authority on what may be going on outside of the dugout, for example, in the locker-room. It generally seems the case that Melvin is very well-regarded for the way he handles players off the field, with even the likes of ex-Dbacks like Orlando Hudson calling Melvin, “One of my best friends.”
Now, there’s plenty of questionmarks over his management on the field; choice of relief arms, use of the bunt [our hitters have three bunts this year, our pitchers only one!] and manlove for Tony Clark [if he doesn’t hit tomorrow, that’ll be two weeks without a knock]. But as well as assessing whether someone would be better equipped to handle the in-game moves, we also have to assess how they would interact with the current roster, because that is, arguably, even a more important aspect of the position.
Maybe the best solution would be to let someone else – Kirk Gibson, Chip Hale, the crowd at Chase through means of buttons in the arm-rests – manage the game, but leave Melvin to handle things after the final pitch?

i like
the buttons in arm rests idea. It’s like “Who wants to be the manager” game show. Except i’m sure the fans that traveled to see another team are going to screw this one up

Ugh.....
I can just SEE the “manager” bringing in Jon Rauch to relieve our starter in the 2nd inning of a Cubs game…..

Obviously
The only reasonable solution is to let established Snakepitters manage the game via the GDT.

I concur.
Obviously, this is far and away the best solution, since we know way more about baseball than Bob Melvin.

i too agree
with you, however, may i point out a slight kink in the suggestion (btw, this is all done in an english accent), the, so you say, snakepitters (snakepittas in england), would have their delightful website deleted after three bad performances by the diamondbacks, hahaha (in an almost frenchy snotty haha type of laugh).
In american, if the snakepitters fail to win games, we’re effed. got it?! good.

that is correct
btw, sweet new picture.
anyways, i’m sure “BoMel” even though i’ve never called him that; either way i’m sure he know waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than me, or kishi, or ‘skins, or even jim (don’t punish me). He knows his players and i’m sure he knows what’s best…..at this point.
……note…….at this point…….not implying anything by that, but i’m sure someone like joe torre can do better, not that anyone like that is moving to the desert

I'd like to echo this sentiment, especially after tonight
We’re still in the game and DD has tossed a terrific 100+ pitches. Should we go to the bullpen to keep it within striking distance? Nah, we’ll toss DD out there for another inning to see him lead of the inning with 2 hits and then we’ll pull him. IDIOT!!!! Where’s my armchair button?

the point is he doesn't know when to do one and when to do the other
It’s like he’s sitting there with a copy of “Baseball Managing for Dummies” and taking what the book says and doing the opposite. His methods lack all common sense.

In the abstract
a lot of his decisions make a kind of sense. Even if the results were bad, you could conduct a plausible argument in favor of them. But no matter what the excuses are, the results of those decisions have been awful. It goes against our team’s well-established “Chris Burke Protocol” but it’d be great if the team started looking at results, acknowledging mistakes (with something more than “it was a disappointing game” or “that’s the kind of hitter I am”) and making some adjustments to the roster.
We’re only 3 weeks into the season and the Diamondbacks already look like they’re ready for the off-season. I don’t want to watch another few months of a baseball team that expects to play badly.

Yeah, Bob Melvin pretty much sucks.
He keeps the starting pitcher in longer than he should. I would rather have a 100% stamina relief pitcher in the game, than a pitcher with a count at 95+, though there are some exceptions, like Haren and Webb, too bad he’s out till June, but my general feeling is limit a starting pitchers pitch count.
Because this is Arizona.
