Gameday Thread, #9: 4/15 vs. Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals at Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr 15, 2009 3:40 PM EDT
|

Sorry for the sparse preview of today's game. I got the bare bones up before coming in to work, and was fully intending to add more before it got published at 11am, but I've been kept too busy and am only now getting my first break. :-( Well, at least it will make the day go by pretty quickly...
First pitch in about five minutes, so we'll see how the offense does without threats of animal cruelty. Some interesting changes in the lineup, already posted in the Gameday Thread, and we'll see whether there is any positive effect from the victory we clawed back last night. Mind you, as I recall, we lost the next two games after scoring six in the ninth to beat Milwaukee, scoring a total of three runs, so momentum may be over-rated...

Upton back in the lineup today
And CoJack batting second? Okay.
From AZDBLineupCard, which has to be one of the more interesting decisions to use Twitter:
1/Lopez/2B
2/Jackson/LF
3/Drew/SS
4/Tracy/1B
5/Reynolds/3B
6/Young/CF
7/Upton/RF
8/Snyder/C
9/Garland/P
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
I like
Jackson batting second but I was surprised they didn’t put Byrnes in since he won the game last night. I though they would put Jackson at first today.
Surprised as well.
BoMel usually rewards players like that — both Reynolds and CoJack, for example.

CoJack
SHOULD be batting second…. he’s NOT a cleanup hitter.

I won't argue with that
It’s just odd to actually see him there.

Oh no, I agree.
I just wish BoMel would do it more often, especially given that CoJack’s gotten quite a bit faster than he used to be. (KGib?)

Being a fan is all about hyperbole …
I understand what you’re saying. We all cheer the good and decry the bad. It’s an emotional roller coaster for all of us . But there’s also a loyalty component to fandom, that the nature of some of your in-game comments would seem to contradict.
You appear not only disappointed, or pissed, at bad events, but are ready to disown the team at the drop of a hat. Given the circumstances (2nd week of the season, early in the game, a night after two or three terrific clawbacks), you dont appear to be very loyal to these players.
You appear to be more loyal to the latest home run, the latest ground out, the latest refresh.
Disappointment = normal, healthy
Hopelessness, under these circumstances = keep it to yourself
Cheer on

Everybody’s here to have fun and we define that differently, which is cool to a point. A community of individuals.
Honestly, I’d like nothing better than to ‘read Snakepit’, but it’s not as fun having to wade through a couple hundred superfluous comments on a GDT….I cant speak for anyone else, but it also seems to clog up my Atari and makes it harder for me to post.
There’s twenty people on this thread – and 40% of the comments are from one person. …a little less than one post per pitch, across an entire nine inning game. I’m not the boss of you, but just respectfully ask you to reconsider the mindset this represents some kind of accomplishment, or that it enhances the quality, rather than simply the quantity, of the GDT.
Think how oppressive it would be if I – or anyone – blurted 260 comments on GDTs. I imagine I’d be banned, for not ‘taking a hint’ or whatever, before that could even happen. Similarly, I think you’ve put yourself above the community concept here.
You’re a fun guy – I really do enjoy your general good cheer and occasional insights – and nobody’s asking you to leave. But I am asking you to take a hint.
The pit needs you as Omnipresent Host as much as our Dbacks need Mike and Vanessa :-)

Really, have you read threads on other SBN sites?
I don’t even want to consider how many variations on “eff you, Tony La Russa” I read while reading the GDT from the Cardinals site yesterday. Suffice to say, that was the main thing I got out of their ~2300 comments. And since I have, in previous situations, been a person who dominated a GDT as much as Skins did today, and haven’t been banned, I kind of question some of the theories in your comment.
More importantly, if there is a problem, wouldn’t that be something for Jim to deal with as he saw fit, rather than for you to install yourself as self-elected sheriff of the site and publicly call out anyone who you decided wasn’t meeting your standards?
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
Normally
sherriffs dont respectfully ask folks to reconsider a mindest, or take a hint, or tell people they enjoy their insights while assuring them they’re “not the boss of you”.
They threaten and ban people with no formal power – and since I have no formal power here, your “sherriff” put down confirms my observation carries authority of its own.
i’m just an individual expressing dissatisfaction with another individual’s perceived excesses – just like you. We “police” each other constantly, kishi, in an informal way, and that’s my aim here. To handle the situation as reasonable adults, to make the blog experience better for everyone.
My frame of reference isnt other SBN sites – I’ve no interest in 2300 comment GDTs either. It’s snakepit itself, when there wasnt quite so much noise. Or a place like Deadspin, which revolutionized blogging by imposing high writing and comment standards, then abandoned both on the altar of revenue porn.
I’ll get to skins remarks in a minute, but I just dont see the benefit – to the blog – of someone consistently posting hundreds and hundreds of daily comments. Who it happens to be, is a secondary issue, if at all.
It’s just my opinion. People can disagree. skins has heard my complaint and can do what he wants. Just like anybody else.

For the most part,
the fact that I average a google of comments per GDT is a reflection that I recognize that we have users who are relying on either MLB Gameday or even the GDT itself for updates on the game, and actually, when I’m the only one listening on the radio, I’m naturally going to get the quickest updates out, since even the TV feed is slightly delayed. Some other SBN sites, in fact, have an admin post actual pitch-by-pitch or at least play-by-play updates. Russ, at Purple Row, often does that.
I don’t take commenting as an “accomplishment” seriously — it’s all very tongue in cheek and self-deprecating; quantity vs. quality and all that. I don’t post a ton of comments just to pad my comment total. I post a ton of comments because I post a ton of comments. Doing things like posting a FanShot to celebrate my own 30,000th comment are entirely meant so everyone else can roll their eyes at DbacksSkins’ constant buffoonery. (I should also note that, yes, I do often laugh at my own jokes)
Regarding the peaks and troughs of my mood about the Dbacks, I think that you should know better than anyone else that it’s not easy for me to separate PbP from my own commentary, so I don’t particularly try. Snakepit is a place for Dbacks fans to voice their opinions — even the fans with big mouths.
I think I would agree that if you posted as many comments as I do that you would probably be banned, but that wouldn’t be the reason for your being banned. It would be the manner in which you so often post; not even so much annoying everyone else with your constant broken record criticism of the FO in general and Derrick Hall in particular, but your propensity to include at least one ad hominem attack in almost every comment, tempered by the inclusion of a smiley or a “cheers” at the end. ;-)

Thanks for responding in some depth
First, I sincerely appreciate your rather easy ability to laugh at yourself. For example, Jim & I are both capable of that, but rarely imbibe when clenched in battle – which is too bad, imo.
I dont really see the need for constant pitch updates from one person, just because you’re three seconds ahead or whatever. It’s a leisurely game, not a race, and most here are following pitches on their own anyway, thru some means.
your propensity to include at least one ad hominem attack in almost every comment, tempered by the inclusion of a smiley or a "cheers" at the end. ;-)

I like snakepit and will fight to ensure that its best qualities dont get drowned out by its worst….again, to a point. But I’m concerned its recent growth spurt has spawned some ‘quality of life’ issues, and if they’re not eventually addressed, I will find ‘better things to do.’

I dont think
it’s all negative either. It’s nice to have new voices. I’d rather participate in a 300 comment GDT with twenty or thirty people equally represented (more or less), than an 800 GDT where two people type half the comments.
It doesnt really matter who it is – I just find that structure rather tedious, from both a posting and reading perspective.

Argh....
Upton with 2 strikes. Sounds like he’s trying to hit a 3 run bomb with only 1 runner on base.

Now Upton's backing off a bit.
He’s not gonna be Barry Bonds. Kid needs to relax.
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Upton's coming around
This is nice to see. I’m now in the camp of him staying around and playing every day.
I'm not
I still think we pulled the trigger on him too soon. He’s working under a ton of pressure while trying to develop
Go DBacks!
I think
calling him up in ’07 was the right move, but not necessarily ’08….
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
He is
But I think he’s been handling it much better the past couple of days. I’m not saying he’s not taking some bad swings, but he’s at least been getting on base, contributing however he can.
Nothing doing.
Still, back to within two, and the Cards bullpen isn’t in much better shape than ours is right now. Who knows what could happen down the stretch.
Hold down the fort
I’m taking off from work. Hopefully I’ll get home in time for the last couple of innings.

Yeah
Friday & Saturday. Unfortunately, I have to work on Sunday. Gotta take advantage of them being here. The previous sentence is what every opponent of the Diamondbacks has said so far this season.
Lucky!
We should meet up when they come in August. I’d normally be there this weekend too but I’m going to Santa Barbara. So instead, I’m seeing them in AZ Mon & Wed. :)

Prediction Analysis
Here are my (previously posted) predictions, with results:
1) Upton starts, goes 2-4 with a HR and a walk
- oof, so close. J-Up went 1-3 with a walk
2) Byrnes starts, goes 1-3 with a HR (amended to pinch hit HR)
- nailed it, other than the “starting” prediction
3) Reynolds starts, 1-4 with 2 Ks
- 1-4 check, 2 Ks check, wish I had predicted the HR
4) Pain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1TxiVhrkZA
- indeed
Whoa
Garland’s kind of good looking. Good to know.
