Twitter and Baseball

Hello chaps!

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this :(

But, one thing that I can't seem to escape being a broadcast journalism student is the emergence of Twitter.

For those who don't know it's a microblogging site where you're allowed to post 'tweets' of no more then 140 characters. You can then follow other people and read their tweets. It's kind of like facebook's status updates but filtered to people and organisations that you may want to keep up with etc etc.

I just wondered if anybody had good twitter feeds for baseball news and scores, and if there was anyway to get a twitter feed going for the 'pit?

With the new content we are getting from KTAR and the number of posters and editors we have, it would be nice to get a few strong feeds for D-Backs news.

oh and I'm @wimby

Thanks guys and sorry if this is in the wrong place Jim!

I just don't get it

I am far from technology averse, but I don’t really get Twitter. At all. I even tried it for about 2 days with my own twitter account but I just didn’t see the reasons behind it.

If someone feels like telling my why I need to receive (or post) daily (or hourly) 140-character posts throughout my day I’d love to hear it.

Zug be with you.
And also with you.

I

like the stream of conscienceness nature of the posts, but I won’t follow someone unless they’re funny (like Shaq) or someone I know.

Sports and Twitter haven't 'Gotten It' Yet

I think that twitter really emerged nationally during the last election cycle and that was about when the season was winding down. The most useful thing is getting the instant updates to your readers as a feed and re-link, and hope that your baseball fan is following, re-tweets, etc.

I think we will see it emerge more this year, but I haven’t seen a sport blog really latch on to it yet. I know that tweets from ballparks, tinypics, brightkite, etc will be more useful this year for people planning on meeting up/keeping in touch with their baseball. Or at least, i’m hoping it helps with the weak economy possibly keeping people away from the parks.

As for the Pit getting on twitter, that’s all up to Jim … But in the past he hasn’t been interested in social networks tied back to the pit (Like Myspace). Plus, the updates in the last yer to SB Nation have made it a sports social network onto itself … throwing something else on there for him to juggle would probably suck for him and Mrs. Snakepit :).

Well, baseball is lagging behind...

But basketball is certainly picking up on the Twitter trend. Check out Bright Side of the Sun and you’ll see how much. It helps that Shaq is so active with it as a way to communicate directly with his fans, and he even snuck in a halftime tweet the other day (as did Charlie Villanueva of the Bucks). Steve Nash, Jason Richardson and Alvin Gentry also have them, among many others. I’ve seen very little involvement from baseball, but basketball is quickly becoming the pioneer for bringing those two elements together.

Honestly,

I’m not a fan of Twitter, either, even though I am somewhat involved in social networking. (Have a MySpace account that’s mostly unused, but was probably one of the first 50,000 or so Facebook users)

I think the 140-character limit

Is a bit of an issue for baseball, which tends to require a bit more analysis. Most of my sentences tend to run longer than that! :-) But it certainly seems to have its uses as a promo tool. Interesting piece in the Republic tonight: Suns riding the digital wave. It’s maybe something to look into, but is one piece of technology where the D-backs are well behind the Suns.

I don't want to touch twitter with a 20 foot pole

Already got enough sites to check daily to keep me busy.

Twitter’s going to continue to be huge. It’s one of those things, like gmail accounts and facebook, that will eventually help connect everything together.

Awesome
A mammoth project is also under way to rewrite the whole of the newspaper’s archive, stretching back to 1821, in the form of tweets. Major stories already completed include “1832 Reform Act gives voting rights to one in five adult males yay!!!”; “OMG Hitler invades Poland, allies declare war see tinyurl.com/b5x6e for more”; and “JFK assassin8d @ Dallas, def. heard second gunshot from grassy knoll WTF?”

i have an account...

… but it must be an age thing or something — none of my good friends have an account. Plus, for some reason I can’t seem to be able to switch back and forth b/w my wife and my account that easily. i’ll stick with FB, thankyouverymuch.

Um.

Unbeknownst to me, I also have a Twitter account.

Seriously. I forgot about that thing until I got the email saying “Jim (AZSnakepit) is now following you on Twitter! Follow Jim?”

Must’ve been a bit out of it when I did that.

LOL

When I signed up, it went through everyone in my Gmail contacts list and pointed out everyone who had a Twitter account. I added most of the people I have actually met – I still feel a bit stalkerish about “following” people I don’t feel I know!

Okay,I signed up,I’m “hotclaws” on there like I am everywhere.I’ve found I can’t get on Facebook much but I believe it’s because my internet provider does not like sites which try to track users .Redbricks Internet Co-op hates Facebook with a passion.
I’m off to track you all down.

I'm not sure I'll ever reduce myself to Twitter.

But I finally caved and got a FB, so anything’s possible, I guess.

I feel so empty.

I signed up too

after I saw a thing that said Fox Sports Net AZ was on twiter, I caved! I am weak…

Should’ve done my ‘Pit name but I’m “elvenjen”. Followed the ‘Pit too. I’m confused, how do you comment on someone’s feed, is that the @AZSnakepit stuff?

Yes

@[username] is a “response” to someone. If you want to make something searchable, then do #[subject]. So let’s say you want people to find a post about the D’backs, you would say

#dbacks are awesome!

I am still confused... :(

I tried #AZSnakepit and @AZSnakepit and it didn’t show up on Jim’s tweets like emily’s does, it just published to mine…

by snakecharmer on Apr 1, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I

don’t see any posts on your page? The way it works is that you only see your feed at any given time. So if you put @AZSnakepit, it will show up on your page and AZSnakepit’s as well.

I am Shiva the destroyer, your harbinger of doom this evening.

Ohh...

I did delete if off my page, but that was after I saw it didn’t appear on AZSnakepit’s. So I guess I need to leave it there? I’m really impatient, I probably deleted it too fast. ;)

by snakecharmer on Apr 1, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You

don’t see my post because you’re not following me. The only things you’ll see is your own posts and the people you’re following.

because I don’t see my comment on AZSnakepit. Shouldn’t it show up there like emily’s do?

Oh those were posts TO you and Emily...

So only Jim can see the “mentions” of AZSnakepit..

Okay, but this is still weird.
