Word
What word best describes the Diamondbacks? This can be the organization, or just the team. You decide. In a word, what do the Diamondbacks mean to you? What prompted this exercise was that I came across a word - a common word - sort of incidentally, and I'm curious if anyone else chooses it - or something similar.
Treat it as rapid word association, or really put some thought into it. Either way, I'd appreciate your "wordy" response, with or without supporting explanation. Distillation is the key - pick a noun or adjective or verb (or three) that gets to the core of Diamondbackdom.
Heck, we'll even accept pithy two or three word phrases, if absolutely necessary. But please, no complete sentences, morse code or haiku!
Thanks for your time. Word. Out.
(ps - my word wasnt 'evil', so think again BWAHAHAHAHA)

My passion.
I’d go with “My secondary wife”, but my primary one may object. :-)

I'll bite...
First thought: Mirror Pond Pale Ale, but that’s pretty personal/esoteric.
Second thought: Frustrating.
Asked the kids aged 8 and 6 and both responded simply “baseball”; guess they are still a bit young to fully grok word association.

Intelligent.
It ties in with “Budget”, because they have to be smart to work their money with drafting to get a team put together. Much like the Rays, have to tie down their players (Haren) while they’re available to get.

Control
New owners emerged to control spending (and regain control of their return on investment)
On the field, Dbacks (with the notable exception of Eric) seem fairly reserved, controlled. Minimal histrionics for a young team. Those deemed to lack self-control (ie Valverde, Quentin), are weeded out in favor of players who are more reserved and dont make waves.
Despite all the whiffs, I’d argue our young hitters exhibit control. A lot of misses, but not as many wild swings. They were 4th in the league in walks – pretty good control of the strikezone. Our pitchers, year in year out., have the best control in baseball.
Relative to their respective peers, both Bob Melvin and Josh Byrnes exude self-control. A central tenet of roster construction is utilizing/exploiting young players under ‘team control’. Byrnes observes pitching is the only aspect of the game a GM genuinely controls, so he accordingly dedicates the lion’s share of his resources to that which he can control – even after pitching is the established strength of the team
.
Message and image control under Derrick Hall may be unprecedented for a N American professional sports organization. I cant remember the last time we even heard a ticketing director talk about tickets, or an event planner riff about a promotional event, or the charity director wax on a program, or a player or coach develop an online presence? ( I realize some folks think it’s great to be able to email the CEO when there’s not enough mustard on their hot dog, but this is about image control at least as much as it is about widespread customer service.
To a startling degree, all of these issues get intercepted and driven by the inordinately ‘accessible’ Mr Hall, who made his mark in what his eleven paragraph bio refers to as “Crisis Mgmnt” (ie damage control).
(pls note – the bio of this Hall predecessor and multitasker comes in at five paragraphs)

I wonder what word he is thinking of. I’m guessing “Mgmnt”

Hmmm... I like the sound of that.
“Mgmnt”. How do you pronounce it?

Interesting....
Even though nobody came up with that word, I found all the responses unique (for a lack of a better word). I liked this exercise…

Those deemed to lack self-control (ie Valverde, Quentin)
That’s not exactly how I would describe Quentin? Callaspo, on the other hand…
Relative to their respective peers, both Bob Melvin and Josh Byrnes exude self-control.
Yup. Witness Melvin rarely getting tossed from a game and never losing his cool in public.

I figured
Quentin might raise a question or two. I heard that he beat himself up in Arizona and was his own worst enemy. That’s what I meant by self-control. I singled out him and Valverde, because they’re both big talents who reportedly didnt always keep it real in the clubhouse, and who recently got ushered out.

+1
is that your new “word”?
I thought “Upton” was perfectly swell, but suit yourself.
Quentin beat himself up….Alberto missed something in the translation.
