opposing point of view
Hi, I am a Giants fan, but I have been thinking about the Diamondbacks team lately. I think they are a good team, but they can be a a lot better.
To start, I have to say that there are some holes. First and second basemen fourth and or fifth starter. These holes can be filled though. There are many free agents that can fill the holes.
So lets start with second base, I think the answer is Felipe Lopez. He is a fantastic hitter, and he played well for you last year. Also he will come cheap and without costing any draft picks. Felipe hits high obp, avg. gets a lot of hits, and hits good slugging percentage.
First base can be filled by signing Carlos Delgado. Delgado is a great hitter. He could be signed cheaply. Delgado gets on base, hits homeruns, gets rbis. He is also a great clubhouse guy.Delgado improves hitting and adds another power guy to the lineup.
Pitching is your strength, why not add to the big three. I would suggest either Vicente Padilla or Erik Bedard.
So if the Diamondbacks signed Felipe Lopez, carlos Delgado, and one of the pitchers, this team could really go far. The pitching itself would win games, but the great offense really makes them contenders.
So look at the lineup
Felipe Lopez
Carlos Delgado
Chris Young
pitcher This lineup has everything except for the fact that there isn't a lot of base stealing.
Rotation
Danny Haren
Erik Bedard/Vicente Padilla
Relief
closer: Chad Qualls
Juan gutierrez
The bullpen is fantastic, probably one of the top bullpens in the Mlb
With the new additions this team is really good.

well Mike
we had him for half a year last year and I can say that while flip can hit a bit, I just wasn’t too impressed. Maybe he was affected by our injuries, maybe he’s simply a mercenery, perhaps he’s lacking in professionalism, but I was happy to see him go. He fit last year’s club like big sister’s clothes, sure they smelled nice but the style was all wrong.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Welcome to the Pit
Couple of thoughts on your thoughts. I think resources probably mean that, with the possibly exception of Kelly Johnson at second, the roster we have is largely the one we’ll go into Opening Day.
I don’t think Lopez will ‘come cheap’, in part because he won’t cost any draft picks. We got him cheap for 2009, as he was coming off a 93 OPS+ season. Now, he’s coming of a 111 OPS+ year, and is arguably the best free-agent option at 2B on the market. He certainly won’t be any cheaper than 2009.
At 1B, Carlos Delgado is a left-hander, and what we are more likely to be looking for, is a right-hander with whom we can platoon Brandon Allen. Having earned $12m last season, not sure how ‘cheap’ he would be either. I can see something of a pay-cut due to injury curtailing this season, but in 2008 he had an OPS+ of 127, so still seems to have a lot to offer.
As for pitching, I don’t see us adding anyone else. Even someone league average is likely going to cost $6-7m, and Arizona does not seem to have that much left in the piggy-bank. Adding someone else would certainly be nice, but I just can’t see how it could be done, unless we can convince someone to take Eric Byrnes off our hands and pay most of his salary.

To be fair,
We’ve been linked with Carlos Delgado as of late. It would actually fit nicely so that we could have Jackson lead-off, Montero second, Upton third, Delgado fourth, Reynolds fifth, Drew sixth, CY seventh, and Abreu eighth for a RHB/LHB/RHB/LHB/RHB/LHB/RHB/SH lineup. Pretty nice, eh?
But Lopez isn’t the answer and we’re not going for more pitching.

That's
not at all a bad lineup.
Although, Miggy second? Really? That’s an interesting idea….

I'd want him there rather than sixth
And since you’re not going to put him there and Delgado either sixth or second, it seems to make sense, at least to me.

"there" refers to 4th.

4th? or 2nd?

In the subject
It is 2nd. In the subsequent explanation, 4th. Essentially, I have Montero second because I don’t want him fourth in this scenario because Delgado does not belong second or sixth. There. :-P

Ok thats fine
And I don’t know a lot about Brandon Allen, Ryan Roberts, or Abreu
I just think though that there should be some good backup guys if they struggle or are injured. For second base maybe Kelly Johnson, and for first maybe like Doug Mientkiewicz or Kevin Millar

We've offered Kelly Johnson a contract
And an idea Zephon just threw out would be Snyder platooning with Allen. He’d need a rebound year offensively, but it would help his back, so possibly that could be a brilliant idea the organization is hiding. If we could also afford Delgado, that would be amazing…

Oh Hell no!
Thumbs down to the idea of getting Kelly Johnson
Carlos Delgado will NOT come out here…plus he’s over-rated and demands WAY too much $$$!!!

Welcome to the 'Pit! And thanks for your thoughts.
I think we’re certainly not totally done making offseason moves, but we probably won’t be making any big ticket free agent signings like you’re talking about. Yup, we’ve still got some holes, but on Josh Byrnes’ part, they’re going to take creativity to fill. Not money.

Thanks
and I don’t think the diamondbacks necessarily need to make any big moves, they are a great team, just there are some holes, but they will still be competitive.

Welll....
“great team” might be hyperbole…

I'd rather not sign Delgado.
I have faith in Allen, and even if we were to sign a first baseman, I look for a RHH to platoon with him. To be honest, I like Garko. The guy has hit very well against left handers over his career. Shouldn’t be too expensive either.
I would love Delgado
if he were in the $4-5 million range; you’d have to consider opening up the budget a little further than you’d intended this offseason. Anything more than that is simply out of our price range, even though $6-7 mil would still be pretty reasonable for his potential numbers.
Considering his age and injury history
And lack of defense, I’m not so sure of this. Allen has been a much better defender throughout the minors, and opening the budget now means less money later (i.e. for Upton).

In all honesty,
I don’t see how we afford Upton whether we shave a couple million off payroll the next few years or not. I’d love to be wrong, though.
I'm holding out some hope
Can we dedicate a quarter of our payroll to one player? It’s always an interesting question.

Agreed.
