(Non-)Tender is the Night
10pm Arizona time today marks the non-tender deadline: the last chance for teams to offer contracts to unsigned players on their 40-man roster. If they opt not to do so, players become free agents, and can sign with any club. It looks like the Diamondbacks will offer deals to all their players in this category, such as Conor Jackson, but might there be a chance for the team to pick someone up, released by another club? There are usually some useful pieces that get cut loose, and it can be a chance to pick someone up for a relative song.
Tim Dierkes has put up a list of potential non-tenders at MLBTradeRumors.com. Some of these will certainly be given contracts (his list contains Jackson, and you can take it to the bank that the team will not let him walk away from Arizona), and others we might not want to touch with someone else's ten-foot bargepole. However, after the jump, we'll take a look at some interesting names in the positions the D-backs need help, on on whom we may want to kick the tires if they become available.
- Jeremy Accardo. Over the past three seasons, Accardo has an ERA+ of 160 for the Blue Jays, though admittedly, he only threw 37 major-league innings in 2008 and 2009 combined, and spent most of last year in Triple-A [posting an ERA of 3.00 in 27 appearances]. A local boy - born in Mesa - he could be a useful arm to add to the Diamondbacks bullpen.
- Garrett Atkins. Purple Row says he has been officially non-tendered by the Rockies. Last year was a disaster for him - OPS+ of just 66 - but his career numbers are still solid. He's only 30, is a career .289 hitter, averaging 20 homers per season, and even adjusting for Coors, has a career OPS+ of 102. Of particular interest to Arizona because he murders LHP, so could be a nice platoon-mate for Allen at first-base.
- Taylor Buchholz. While we're pillaging Coors Field, maybe they'll let Buchholz slip through. This may seem unlikely, since he was lights-out in the Rockies bullpen last season, posting an ERA of 2.17 over 63 games. Normally, there'd be little chance of that kind of performance being non-tendered, but the Rockies have to find an awful lof of arbitration money for 2010.
- Jack Cust. A former Diamondbacks' top-draft pick, I should stress there's absolutely no chance of us taking on Mr. Hands of Stone. But I just think it would be amusing to have the 2008 and 2009 K leaders from both leagues playing on the Diamondbacks next year...
- Ryan Garko. While he flopped badly with the Giants down the stretch, he has produced four straight season of 100+ OPS+. He's another who kills southpaws - Garko's career line vs. LHP is .313/.392/.495, though he's never going to win any Gold Gloves at first. Will probably still be in SF: Grant from McCC reckons, "If the Giants start 2010 with Garko as the starting first baseman, that's just fine."
- Kelly Johnson. Like Atkins, a poor 2009 derailed what was looking like a decent career - an OPS+ of 108 prior to last season is excellent for a second-baseman, and he has a good defensive reputation as wel;. Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves are trying to trade Johnson, but will non-tender him if a deal can not be worked out before the deadline.
- John Maine. 28-years old, ERA+ of 106 in his four seasons with the Mets. Should be a no-brainer to keep that guy in the Big Apple, right? Apparently not. New York have been dangling him in trade talks, such as with the Brewers for outfielder Corey Hart. Still, even if that falls through, you'd have to be stupid to let him walk away. However, we are talking about the Mets...
- Brandon Medders. A tale of two Brandons, both former D-backs who'll be aged 30 next Opening Day. B. Lyon, career ERA+ of 111, gets a three-year, $15m deal from the Astros. B. Medders, career ERA+ 136, is a possible non-tender candidate from the Giants. Seems fairly certain he will be offered a contract though, and the Giants would be mental not to do so.
- Chien-Ming Wang. Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list, this would have seemed unthinkable last year, with career numbers of 54-20 and an ERA+ of 117. However, Wang imploded - his first three starts led to 23 earned runs in just six IP, and he had season-ending shoulder surgery on July 30. Some team will offer the sinkerballer an incentive-laden contract: 50/50 whether its a bargain or a bust.

Ryan Garko
Should come cheap. I’d definitely take him in a platoon role with allen.

I like Garko
If we’re not going to go for a big upgrade at 1st like Nick Johnson than Garko would be a great addition for cheap. Great splits against lefties.

Go for Garko or Atkins
And then spend big on a bullpen arm?

Cust. . .
“Jack Cust. . . I just think it would be amusing to have the 2008 and 2009 K leaders from both leagues playing on the Diamondbacks next year.”
Look on the bright side – having both of them on the team would seriously cut down on Hit into Double Plays. . .
And then
we can trade Brandon Webb to get Adam Dunn back, and with CY and Upton on top, our team would be seriously awesome.
Or seriously terrible. One of the two.
Even Satan thinks Scott Boras is evil.
Nah. Upton’s no good, there. Trade him straight up for Uggla.

Oooh!
If we could trade, say, CoJack for Uggla, we’d have even MORE K’s and HR’s! OMG this is awesome!!

Think we could rack up 2000 as a club? Sounds like a good goal for 2010.

He had no major-league value.
And would probably just get in the way of Ryan Wheeler’s development if Wheeler were to break out and make it to AAA this season, which is definitely a possibility if the team starts him in AA (if they start him in Hi-A, not so much, but then Goldschmidt would be stuck with Mid-A). That’s another 400k we could use to sign a major-league piece?

Just looked at his season

Well...
Purple Row is now NL West blog number two that I’ve been banned from. Sure I was obnoxious, but come on, one post with no warning seems a bit much, no?
Oh well, I’ll take the opportunity here to post what would have been my rebuttal:
Actually, I saw him non-tendered today and I thought, “huh, wasn’t he the guy that some crazy Rockies fans were arguing was one of the best players in baseball a while back.” Then two seconds later via the magic of google I was able to find out – seriously, it was the very first hit for “dahlian site:purplerow.com”. Turned out, the thread was even more hilarious than I remembered.
Remember kids, park effects are real, batting average and home runs are not the be all and end all of player evaluation, and if you have the chance to trade a good player in a position of surplus for a good player in a position of need, do so.
Really
You are going on a rant about park factors? Really?
Did you bother to check and see what MLB park ranked number 2 in 2009?
To start 2008 Atkins was coming off of seasons of .410 and .368 wOBA. Which is pretty good.
Would you like to know how good? Go check and see how many Snakes have had wOBA’s higher than that in the last 2 years…
So yea. At the time that Redhawk made that post – Atkins was pretty darn good.
I’m sure I could search your comment history and find some post of yours touting how great Chris Young was going to be a couple years back, but I don’t really feel like sinking to that level
.
Why don’t you actually do a little research and bring some solid arguments to the table before coming over to another team’s site and poking fun at people.
If you read that thread
I was actually trying to say that I thought Atkins was underrated by most fans – generally the result of ignoring non-superstars on small markets teams and a blanket dismissal of most Rockies hitters due to Coors field. It was the claims that Atkins was the third best third baseman in the league and the heir apparent to George Brett that I found so ridiculous.
And why do Rockies fans always take a statement that Coors Field is the best hitters’ park in the majors as a personal insult? Really, pointing out that Chase is number two on the list negates the argument that Atkins’ hitting stats are inflated? NEWSFLASH – it’s not a value judgment. It’s not a reflection on the moral fiber of the organization. It just is. Accept it and don’t take it as an insult as you have done here and Rockies fans before you did in that thread.
Let's be fair
Let the fanbase who has never touted a player that didn’t live up to his potential cast the first stone.

Sure, Phil
What were you saying about Whitesell half a page up? =)
"I can just see it: Post 'Intervention? Why would I need an intervention?' And then he'd +1 himself."
Wait,
scratch that, I was merely warned, which is much more reasonable – I hadn’t reloaded a page yet to bring up the warning.
Uncalled for? Sure? But something about that thread just stuck in my mind as being the most perfect example of every logic hole that Rockies fans are capable of. Overvaluing conventional statistics, check. Completely ignoring park effects, check. Overvaluing your own talent to the point of self-delusion, check.
You should have been banned, it's more impressive.
I’m not sure I’ve ever actually seen someone get banned from PR.

I still wear
my GasLampBall ban as a badge of honor. What a ridiculous community. All because I had the temerity to suggest that swinging too hard was not a sufficient reason to bean an opposing player.
Me too.
I don’t recall what, exactly, I said to warrant it, though. I think it was more of a lifetime achievement ban.

A lot of competition
Reliever Matt Capps’ agent said Sunday afternoon that his client has received interest from "seven or eight teams" a day after Capps was non-tendered by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Diamondbacks were one of those teams.
Link. Piecoro also mentions in his blog that we won’t be going after Atkins or Wang, but might have an interest in Kelly Johnson.

There's some interesting names on there
I’d take a look at Wang if I didn’t think some team would give him $5-8M per as a two-year flier, but someone is going to – he had back-to-back 19 win seasons in ’07 and ’08.
Jonny Gomes spent a good portion of the year in the minors and still whacked 20 HRs (in 98 games). Also hit above .260, and had an OPS of .879 (OPS+ of 127, career OPS+ of 109). Put that bat in Chase and you could expect to see some darned good results. Platoon him at LF and 1B, wherever he’s needed for the day. He’s 29, has power, and good enough production for the power positions as a platoon. Also hits right-handed, which makes him sound EXACTLY like what we need. I would be ecstatic if we got Gomes. We have a good deal of money to try to offer and the guy got non-tendered so hopefully he can’t be asking for too much. Although on the down-side, it’s not like they let him go because they didn’t want him, they let him go because they couldn’t reach a deal with him. I imagine he’ll also want a couple of years. But it seems worth the gamble to me, especially since he won’t cost draft picks.
Otherwise, Johnson, Garko, and Capps have been mentioned as possibilities. Mike MacDougal, although coming off of injury, was an All-Star last year (although deserving-ness is debatable), and sports a career ERA+ of 113. If he’s willing to come cheaply because of the injury, it could work out well.
