Arizona lost Ambriz (to the Twins Indians) and picked Zack Kroenke (from the Yankees), a lefty AAA reliever with good stuff and command problems.

It seems like an insignificant move, but like the Scherzer/Jackson deal it's very much ERA driven.

Ambriz started the year in AA and pitched well enough to be promoted after 5 starts. In AAA, he had a FIP of 3.8, but a ridiculous BABIP (.372) and strand rate raised his ERA to 5.57.

Kroenke, meanwhile, had a FIP of 3.64 but a sparkling 1.99 ERA thanks to a .251 BABIP.

I'm not complaining here, it seems we have a lot of starters similar to Ambriz in our system, and Kroenke may be a better fit, but it kinda sucks to root for a team that can't differentiate pitcher talent from BABIP.

I wonder if they’re gonna take another guy in round 2 since they optioned two guys off fo the 40 man a couple of days ago.

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

Hah, IHSB! I totally called Ambriz getting taken!

But gloating aside, Kroenke gives us another leftie option out of the pen… I need to see his splits to tell if he’ll strictly be a loogy.

Well, looking at him on minorleaguesplits.com

There’s not all that much difference between his line against LHP vs RHP. So maybe he can be effective against both? I assume he’ll be used as a reliever, probably a loogy at first.

Precisely

And it’s exactly what we need now. Nicely done.

Ambriz

Yeah, Ambriz was the pitcher I wanted to protect too. His peripherals were the best of the Triple A starters. Not at all surprised that he was taken.

Fun Kroenke trivia. . . .

Kroenke has never batted in the minors but HAS managed to score a run: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=kroenk001zac so obviously he is a fantastic baserunner!

I love stupid trivia like that.

Wow

33 runs? The guy was just a professional pinch-runner!

Not too shabby.

Yeeeessssssssssssss!!!!!

We swipe Zack Greinke!!!! This is much more significant than most of you realize.

My AL sources report he’s got FIP, VORP and and a mean streak. He should fit in very nicely in Sedona Red, thank you very much. And Josh got him for nothing.

Outstanding.

And to think we were really close to nabbing Greinke a couple years ago for Quentin. There are just all sorts of regrets hanging around Quentin with this org.

Question. . .

I haven’t seen anything about the D’Backs acquiring Zack Greinke. Can somebody clarify this for me?

Still,

Scherzer AND Sxhlereth for Greinke might have been a good idea. We could have sweetened the pot a bit and thrown in an Eric for good measure. . .

by NASCARbernet on Dec 10, 2009 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it

The Royals probably would have been too worried about getting Byrned in that trade.

@paqs

You may be right that the FO doesn’t appropriately consider peripherals in their evaluations, but even so, we just picked up a guy whose FIP is .15 better than the guy we lost. Can’t complain there, right?

I think

I can’t say I’d disagree.

The difference

One’s a reliever and the other a starter. It doesn’t really matter since Ambriz is probably going to the pen when (if) he makes the majors.

by paqs on Dec 11, 2009 2:53 AM EST up reply actions

Indians

Ambriz went to the Indians not the Twins. Sheesh! Nobody caught that?
