Farewell: Chad Tracy, Yusmeiro Petit, Doug Slaten, Daniel Cabrera (and maybe Alex Romero and Trent Oeltjen)
With a hat-tip to Amit for the first news, a flurry of roster moves for the Diamondbacks the morning after the World Series - albeit most of them not entirely unexpected. Chad Tracy had his buyout exercised, while Daniel Cabrera, Trent Oeltjen and Alex Romero were outrighted to Reno. Cabrera has also elected to become a free agent instead, and it's possible Oeltjen and Romero may follow - ladylike weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth to follow. Yusmeiro Petit was picked up off waivers by the Mariners, and Doug Slaten went similarly to the Nationals. The 40-man roster now has five vacant spots left on it, after the moves.
Not really any surprises here. However, I'll write a bit more about these decisions in Saturday's round-up.

I checked and didn't see anything on him.
You have a link?

Ok.
That wasn’t at all unexpected and doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be retained. I thought he’d already freaking agreed to sign somewhere…

Admittedly
I’m a little bit surprised about Petit, given that he’s only 24, but the guy was a junkballer with a #5 ceiling that he didn’t appear close to reaching.

I’m fairly surprised by this. I think it might be preemptive, but it clearly means that the club is either going to bring in a FA #5 or they have much more confidence in Augustein, et al. I admit the irrationality of it, but I still think Petit can be a decent #4— kind of a poor man’s DD. I still wish him well.

Petit in Seattle
Seattle is probably the ideal location for a fly-ball pitcher like Petit, with a spacious park and outstanding outfield defense. If he’s going to succeed anywhere, Safeco should be the place

One problem
That’s the American League. He needs that in the NL. Petco maybe.

Buckner will be the #5
Haren, Webb, Scherzer top-3. We just need a 4. Or shove Buckner there and pray to the gods we don’t suffer for it.

Indeed
Not heard that when the story was posted. It’s so stunningly unsurprising – about on the same level of Lincecum being a pot-head – I can’t even be bothered to update the article. :-)

Letting Tracy go
might come back and bite them. He was the one I was hoping they would retain, injuries or not. He can hit a curve ball. So far, Allen hasn’t demonstrated that ability.

I doubt this hurts them, even slightly. Believe me, I’m as big a Tracy apologist as there is. I love the guy. But unfortunately there is no reason whatsoever to pay a player millions who has a ceiling the height of the McDonalds play gym when we’ve got youngsters with modest ceilings we can play for a few hundred thousand.

I don't understand why fans worry about money?
My concern is the team that’s put out on the field, and not saving someone else’s dough.
Tracy may be expensive, but quality, proven major league hitters are.

I’d question if a 91 OPS+ over the past four seasons, plus a history of injuries, counts as a quality, proven major league hitter.

And that's reasonable
But should he get healthy (and that’s a big ‘should he’), he may be a .290/30/90 guy.
by NASCARbernet on Nov 6, 2009 12:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
290/30/90 guy?
He’s hit 290 once and hasn’t hit over 280 since 2006.
He’s hit more than 20 HR twice, never more than 27.
He’s never hit 90 RBI; hit 80 once and hasn’t hit 40 since 2006.

Because it's better spent
On guys who will actually produce for us next season? Seven million dollars is a lot on the free-agent market. For perspective’s sake, would you rather have a Felipe Lopez and $2M left over, or Chad Tracy?

Totally sucked against LHP
Career line against lefties – in over 500 AB – of .216/.266/.348 for an OPS of .614. For $7m, you’d better be able to hit from both sides of the plate. I liked the guy – we used to sponsor his page on BR – and it’s sad he never lived up to that one monster season, but we have many holes far, far more deserving of the money this off-season.

Letting Tracy go...
May definitely come back to bite the DBacks hard in the @$$! Brandon Allen hasn’t impressed me at all!

He hasn't impressed me at the plate
But he made some good defensive plays last year.

The difference is
Brandon All hasn’t impressed me, but next year will be 24 and get paid league minimum
Chad Tracy hasn’t impressed me, but next year will be 30 and costing $7m.
I can live with the former a lot easier, since there’s a much higher chance of improvement.

That's too bad
Money and production aside (yeah, yeah, I know that’s literally everything), I always liked Tracy (maybe because he’s an original Dback), plus Petit will have a spot in my heart for being so damn bad. At first, I thought Slaten was Schlereth, and I was like :( …

Tracy...
Is an original BABYBACK, you mean?

by Rockkstarr12 on Nov 6, 2009 9:15 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not really
The Babybacks were a little after Tracy. He’s 30, and at least when I think of the Babybacks, I think of Jackson, Drew, CY, et al, guys in their mid-20’s.

She might have met those guys that came up in 2003 when we had all those injuries to regulers. (Kata, Valverde, Webb, Good, etc) I remmember that team being called the babybacks.

I'm more upset about Oeltjen than Tracy.
Oeltjen is one of those bench guys that has speed, defensive capability, and a great attitude. I think the D’backs really should have kept him on as a utility player with the big club, especially if they are getting rid of Byrnes.
Tracy was a victim of numbers. Too much salary, too few on-field results, and too many guys in the pipeline. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere… just not too hard, because he doesn’t want to injure that knee again. :)
You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers.
