D-backs in battle to stay relevant
normally, I'd quote a snippet from the piece, but I found this tidbit from a reader more telling:
"The only way fan sentiment is going to change for this team, right or wrong, is if ownership dumps money into it like Colangelo did, to completely rebuild the fan base all over again through purchased success. And that means winning.
The D-backs need to win if they want to stay relevant, and by doing that, they have to spend money. Simple as that. "

Actually, by Bickley's (admittedly low) standards
That wasn’t such an awful piece. I’ll be talking more about it in the weekly recap later though. As for the comment, it’s true in the sense that the D-backs do need to win to “stay relevant” in this town of bandwagoners and front-runners. However, the leap from there to that they have to spend money… Let’s just say, splashing out boat-loads of cash worked out so well for the Mets this year. What was their record, after spending twice as much money as Arizona? Oh, yeah: the same as us…

I have to admit
I once thought that time would create a tradition and thus fan loyalty. I’m growing a bit disillusioned of this perspective. It may well be the case, but I think it is more likely that the DBacks (along with the Marlins and Rays) may well be forever victim to the transient nature of their home and will always struggle to find the size of fanbase that befits the size of the town.
Obviously winning will help, but I still question whether or not a robust core base of fans will ever emerge. Perhaps time will prove me wrong. I hope so.

That comment blew me away and I hope, it is the minority one.

yep… purchased (but unsustainable) success doesn’t linger long.
