Diamondbacks get INF Tony Abreu from Dodgers
Confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in baseball, the player to be named later in the trade with LA for Jon Garland is indeed second-baseman Tony Abreu. To make room on the 40-man roste ,we designated right-handed pitcher Bobby Korecky for assignment.
From the official press release: "Tony is a switch hitter with the ability to play many infield positions and can swing the bat," Byrnes said. "He certainly will be involved in the competition for second base and add depth and flexibility to our roster." ... In 2008, Abreu spent the entire season on the disabled list having suffered discomfort from sports hernia surgery and a right groin injury during spring training that necessitated season-ending hip surgery on May 28, 2008."
Doesn't seem to have slowed his offense in 2009, he hit .336/.361/.541 between AA and AAA. And, no, he didn't play in Reno. :-) No word as yet with regard to the question of whether he's arbitration eligible a year sooner than we thought, or if so, whether the Dodgers kicked in a little extra to compensate. I suspect not...

Was there ever any doubt? (Or was that sarcasm)

The answer
to our second base problem? Or am I jumping the gun here?

I'd say....
…unless he breaks down again he will be given the starting role next season, if only just to see what he can do at the major league level with some decent playing time.
There isn’t really much more the kid can do at AA/AAA given the numbers he’s put up.

Hmmm....
could be a fairly impressive, yet young, infield, with Stephen Drew as the “veteran”.
Against a RHP: Miguel Montero at C, Brandon Allen at 1B, Tony Abreu at 2B, Mark Reynolds at 3B and Stephen Drew at SS.

Man.
I’m really broken up about Korecky being removed from the 40-man.

We better not get hosed on the arb issue.

Sounds like Abreu was the one who compromised
not the Dbacks or Dodgers

Interesting
Abreu opted to settle the grievance for 30 days of service time – less than originally expected – in order to make himself more attractive to the Diamondbacks.
Looks like he was quite keen to escape from LA. Hey, that sounds like a great movie idea…

Fantastic. Speaks well of our organization. Dodgers got lucky, too, though.

Interesting....
nice to hear that. I assume he thinks his way forward isn’t blocked here the way it is in LA. (Since they’re likely to re-sign O-Dawg)
Or maybe he just wants to play at hitter-friendly Chase Field?
