Diamondbacks get INF Tony Abreu from Dodgers
Confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in baseball, the player to be named later in the trade with LA for Jon Garland is indeed second-baseman Tony Abreu. To make room on the 40-man roste ,we designated right-handed pitcher Bobby Korecky for assignment. From the official press release: "Tony is a switch hitter with the ability to play many infield positions and can swing the bat," Byrnes said. "He certainly will be involved in the competition for second base and add depth and flexibility to our roster." ... In 2008, Abreu spent the entire season on the disabled list having suffered discomfort from sports hernia surgery and a right groin injury during spring training that necessitated season-ending hip surgery on May 28, 2008." Doesn't seem to have slowed his offense in 2009, he hit .336/.361/.541 between AA and AAA. And, no, he didn't play in Reno. :-) No word as yet with regard to the question of whether he's arbitration eligible a year sooner than we thought, or if so, whether the Dodgers kicked in a little extra to compensate. I suspect not...
