Might as well use this one, I'd say

It’s going to be a work in progress the entire winter. Things should start to solidify once the World Series is over, as we have to decided whether or not to exercise Webb’s option. That’ll get an entire post on itself, trust me. :-)

Very close

I think you’ve got the Opening Day pitching almost exactly right. We’ll go after someone to replace Davis in the free-agent market, with someone internal being given the #5 spot. Billy Buckner pitched well there in September and I think will be given first shot there in 2010.

The position side is less certain. C, 3B, RF and SS seem locked down – I can’t see them trading Drew for, say, a starting pitcher, because that would just fill one hole by opening up another. I don’t think he is “untradeable” as he was a couple of years ago, and they will listen to offers, but I doubt he’s being actively shopped.

I think you have called 2B and CF right too. Abreu will be given the chance to prove himself over Ryan Roberts in spring training, and Chris Young’s strong end to the season has probably given him a bit more rope. At least we know now that Parra is a credible replacement, though even if he does take over, Young or Byrnes will likely start against left-handers.

1B and LF. I think we’ll see Jackson regularly starting in LF rather than 1B. It seems a much better defensive fit there. I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to get a free-agent first-baseman this winter. Probably a right-handed bat, as Allen seems very suspect against left-handers [small number of games though].

Off the bench, I think it’s more likely to be Rusty Ryal than Augie. Much as I love Ojeda, will be sorry to see him go, and like his defense, he just doesn’t have any offensive production to speak of. Be very interesting to see what they do with Byrnes. I hope he can at least do something to justify the contract. I don’t think he will be cut before the season, but will get the playing time he proves he deserves and if he doesn’t, there’ll be no hesitation in letting him go.

Finally, welcome to the SnakePit! Thank you for a first post with lots of thought behind it. It’ll be an interesting winter, I think, and I’m pleased I don’t have to make these decisions!

Active Off-season

I’m looking very forward to this off-season. A good amount of money to spend and some promising talent in the right places. I truely feel like the World Series is not out of reach if we make smart moves and get the luck that every WS bound team must have on their side.

First off, we HAVE to pencil in Webb for a decent amount of starts. Or at the very least a return to the old form in the second half. Without him, I don’t think we have the rotation to even sniff the playoffs, let alone progress through them. All my hopes ride on Webby.

Second, LF, CF, 2b and 1b are all manned by a scary range of poor to great players. That’s OK for a couple positions at the start of the season, but not all four. I am most comforatble with letting the outfield play itself out. For the right side of the infield, there are quite a few names I find interesting. Derosa, Iwamura, Hudson at second, Nady and others at 1st. Let’s see who’s left standing after January that we might get a favorable deal with one of them.

Darren Oliver jumps out at me for a bullpen spot. Great numbers in the AL, and his type A status may scare away some teams. Whereas this might be the perfect time for AZ to spend their draft currency, as we will only be giving up a Round 2 player this time around.

Bottom line is we seem to have a lot of flexibility this off-season, and this will probably be the last year we have the Webb/Harren duo to rely on in possible post season games, which is obviously a huge advantage.

I think maybe next season we don’t have go to post season chance.
Anxiety part is so many.

So, next season we Upbringing Young players.

Derosa, Iwamura, Hudson, Oliver are good players.
If they join out team, I really happy. but we don’t have much money and this players are
almost expensive.

So, we give a chance Young players like Abreu, Ryal rather than Derosa, Iwamura, Hudson
and Zavada, Schlereth, Septimo rather than Oliver.

To give Big league Chance, they are possibly boom they potencial.

I think we are Chmpion candidate in 2011 or after saasons.
accordingly, We don’t think impatient.

Really thanks for comment my post and understand my bad English.
I’m not America people.

I want more talk with you foward.

More talk

You’ve got a great grasp for baseball, and I am really impressed that you can manage to be a fan from so far away. How did you find the Dbacks? Can I guess that you were once a fan of Byung-Hyun Kim? He and Craig Counsell were always my favorite players.

Onto your post. I appreciate the idea of being patient, but with the news that our star minor leaguer Parker is 2 years away from coming back, and it being a long shot that Brandon Webb returns after next year, I think this is a season in which the Diamondbacks might consider “going for it”.

I cannot say enough how big a weapong having two pitchers like Webb and Haren is. Of course, it didnt work for the Cardinals this year with Carpenter and Wainwright. Then again, it was largely the reason we have a WS title here in AZ, with Johnson and Schilling really being the catalyst for our success in 2001.

That said, I dont want to empty the farm like we did to get Haren. With the addition of Parker now, we seem to have a strong group of players 2-3 years away. Let them mature down there while the parent club makes a grab for glory.

My Opinion

Cardinals story is very interesting.

If Webb re-sign our team, and will show good form and Haren Showing Same form
2009 season, We maybe have a Champ Chance.
And we have Max ! He is certain card win more 10.

I want to win and champ chance too, but a little down our hope.
Because, If hope big, dissapoint is same big.
Just looking easy nest season Dbacks.

I like Baseball since 2001. You are alright.
BK is my famous player. I like him and automatically like Dbacks.
So I like Dbacks at now.

And Old days, my Father is baseball player in Korea.
He is Utility player in ‘OB Bears’ (Now, team name is change ‘Doosan Bears.’)
So, naturally I like baseball.

Ah ! BK for a time retire and management restaurant, Now he want return.
He training LA now. Hi is young. just 30 years old. And He have specail pitching form.
possibility is big. I want he soon return.

How about...

Platoon CoJack with Allen? Or CoJack with Parra?

Anyways, our bullpen is a mess and needs major fixing — just to state the obvious. To fix it up I’d like Bradford. Solid groundballer, and even if we don’t get him, I’d like to make a run at the dude. Could be useful.

As for second base, Iwamura seems like the guy for us. Or Kennedy. I’ll take either.

And for the rotation, bring Webb back — and sign Marquis. I’m willing to guarantee we won’t get him, but hey, why not try? Another solid groundballer who could be very useful.

by CaptainCanuck on Oct 26, 2009 4:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno Captain

In a way, I’d like to see the team spend the cash on a its owb players that would be willing to be locked up long term and then anything left over could be used towards a savvy vet arm for the bullpen and let the 2nd base position sort itself out. After all, we have Ryal, Roberts, Ojeda and now Abreu all sitting in the holding pattern over the bag, As for the 1B nd LF positions (working under the asumption that the team has Young pencilled in at CF), I see that being handled by a triumvarite of Allen, Parra, and Jackson, with Jackson playing almost full time amd Parra and Allen based on the pitcher being a lefty or not.

As for Rotation suggestions, if we’re not spending too much on a veteran bat (say maybe Dave Roberts or Darin Erstad), maybe someone along the lines Todd Wellemeyer or a class B guy like Pinero or Bedard. In the pen maybe someone like Mark Hendrickson or Brendon Donnelley. Mostly guys that aren’t too old but have been around long enough to show our youngsters the ups and downs and still take the ball when asked. I’m sure others could crunch some numbers and offer some better alternatives,

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

I think ...

Maybe Platoon Conor Jackson with Brandon Allen.

Conor is verification player in Major stage.
But, this season he didn’t have luck. He is not healty.

Now he is healty. He is showing good form in Winter league.
He have ability hit AVG .300, 20 HR and 70 RBI. I belive him.

I think Allen is good player and have good potencial, yet not Full time major leaguer.
So I want main First base is Conor.

Allen is good pinch-hiting player. we use him pinch hitter.
Sometimes, well he starting.

Second base is have sollution in our team.
Abreu, Roberts, Ojeda and Ryal. We save money minimum and spending pitcher.

Maybe we get starting pitcher, I am charmed Todd Wellemeyer.
He is not good form in 2009. but his conditon is not good and have injury.
He will not have injury and have good conditon, he is very useful.
in 2008 season, his form is very good and his price is half of Garland.

And Eric Bedard is well. He is left starter and especially not expensive.

But Marquis is so expensive. We don’t spend money he wants.

How about trade with Marlins ?

I heard they are big sale.
They have many Chaming players. they are young and good. and then cheep !!

Josh Jonson, Ricky Nolasco and Chirs Volstad, Andrew miller are good starter and
Renyel Pinto, Leo Nunez, Dan meyer and Matt Lindstrom are good relief.

We have many prospect players.
Marlins wants young and good and cheep prospect players.
I think it is correct with Dbaks and Marlins all.

Trade with Marlins

A trade with Florida would fit us in many ways. Besides the pitchers you mentioned, it sounds like they would trade Uggla at second base as well, whom I would be more than happy with.

But who are we willing to trade for those SP? The four you mentioned would all take an impressive package of talent. But then again, they might be worth it.

I think ...

In the pircures woman is you ?

that’s funny. I’m enviable you. You are maybe Augie’s big fan.

But, actually Augie’s hard to win main Second base competiton.
He is Old. We are need Young players with go future.

and Hinch is maybe not like use him main 2B. He like young players.

How close...

is a trade of Uggla for Abreu?

Would Florida actually have to add to it’s side in a deal like this?

by Counsellmember on Oct 27, 2009 10:01 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In my opinion...

Not very close. Abreu has potential, but I think you’re valuing him too highly when you look at the fact that he was traded to a division rival for a one month rental of a #5 starter. And cleared waivers at that.

http://somewhereforustofindtonight.blogspot.com/

by pepperdinedevil on Oct 27, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

since we did not officially get him until after the season, he may not have cleared waivers to get to the DBacks.. because that requirement ends right when the regular season ends.

Professional Lurker... if you see this, there may be a problem..

by GuruB on Oct 27, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He DIDN'T clear waivers.

That’s why he was a PTBNL.

I don't think this has ever happened before. The Redskins suck, yet the (Arizona) Cardinals and (University of Arizona) Wildcats don't.

Salary discrepency is the key

Abreu is under team control and cheap for years. Uggla made 5+mil last season and will be a free agent…next year? Im not sure. With Floridas budget being even less than ours, I think this is exactly the type of deal they would be seaking for him. And remember, the Garland trade came with a load of money to cover his buyout.

I may be overvaluing Abreu, but if five+ years of his cheapest years isnt close to being equal to one year of Uggla’s most expensive, then he doesnt sound like he has much value at all.

by Counsellmember on Oct 28, 2009 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uggla would be a good adition.

Very good offensive production for a 2Bbut he’s been up and down defensively in his career.

I’d take him, only if there wasn’t the uncertainty of his future salary.
