Other recipients of The Sporting News’ awards include former Manager Bob Melvin, who was named NL Manager of the Year in 2007; right-handed pitcher Curt Schilling, who was named NL Pitcher of the Year in 2001 and 2002 and the Sportsman of the Year in 2001; and right-handed pitcher Jose Valverde, who was named the NL Reliever of the Year in 2007.
