Submit nominations for the 2009 'Pitties
For the fourth year, we'll be running our end of season awards here at the SnakePit, allowing you to vote on which players deserve recognition for their performances in the 2009 campaign. You can find the list of the previous winners here. I'm now looking for nominees in the following categories:
- Play of the Year
- Single-game Performance of the Year
- Game of the Year
- Unsung Hero
- Rookie of the Year
- Cy Young
- MVP
I think I have a fairly-good handle on the last three, but would particularly welcome suggestions for the other categories, as it's easy to forget incidents and events over the course of a 162-game season. I'll probably start the first poll in about a week, so get your thinking caps on.

I'll start the nominating, I guess, but this is mostly to get people thinking.

Anything involving Mark Reynolds making a diving catch into the stands. (Dunno any dates offhand)
Anything involving Justin Upton or Gerardo Parra gunning down a baserunner
AJ Hinch FINALLY gets ejected (and verbally abused) in a game against the Nats
Anything where a Diamondback got a hit and Troy Tulowitzki was automatically awarded a triple
*Single-Game Performance Of The Year:
The game where Upton had 5 hits
CY’s 3-homer game against the Rockies
Mark’s 2-homer game against the Mets at Citi
Jon Garland’s CG against the Mets on August 2nd
Jon Garland’s last Dbacks win at SPF
Yusmeiro Petit’s near no-hitter against the Pirates
Doug Davis’ 8-IP, 8-h shutout win against the Giants on April 18th
Felipe Lopez homers from both sides of the plate in the season opener
*Game Of The Year:
18 innings vs. the Padres
Brandon Webb’s only win of the year, thanks to run support
*Unsung Hero
Tony Clark (for old times’ sake)
Juan Gutierrez
Jon Rauch
Esmerling Vasquez
Alex Romero
Augie Ojeda
*Rookie Of The Year
Clay Zavada
Gerardo Parra
Trent Oeltjen (he’s here to humor the ladieeeez)
Esmerling Vasquez
Juan Gutierrez
Billy Buckner (or did he already lose his rookie eligibility?)
Ryan Roberts
*Cy Young
Danny Haren (obviously)
Clay Zavada
Juan Gutierrez
Chad Qualls
Max Scherzer
*MVP
Mark Reynolds
Justin Upton
Miguel Montero
Danny Haren
Juan Gutierrez
I have a shrine dedicated to Mark Reynolds, wherein I keep his bobblehead, signed baseball, and jersey T-shirt.
I should
probably include Rusty Ryal, with his team-leading OPS in the ROTY noms.

Other thoughts
- Play of the Year: Triple-play against the Dodgers in May.
Chad Tracy’s come from behind grand-slam versus the Padres.
“May 26: Chris Young, with Padres runners at 2nd and 3rd base, makes a brilliant running catch at the center field wall for the final out of and a 6-5 Diamondbacks win.” Thanks to TAP for that one. ;-) - Single-game performance: B-Bullpen collective no-hitter in the 18-inning game.
Eric Byrnes, 4-for-5, two HR, five RBI in the last series against the Cubs.
Dan Haren: four-hit, 10 K complete game shutout of Florida. - Game of the Year: Shutouts against the Braves (12-0), Cubs (10-0) and SnakePitFest (9-0).
Also, comeback in the ninth vs. LA in August.
We apparently came back from four down this year, but I can’t recall exactly when that was.

May 23rd
Against Oakland- came back from 5-1 down to tie it in the 8th and won 8-7 in extra innings.

"Or they are informing you you are Jewish in a very lame conversion campaign."
"In either case, sending me spam is not the way to invite me to Zion."
Some more recommendations
Play of the year: Mark’s 481 foot home run at Citi Field
Single game performance of the year:
Rauch, Vasquez, Zavada and Rosales combine to no-hit the Padres for 9 innings in the 18 inning win against the Padres.
Haren’s CG shutout against the Marlins
Game of the Year:
8-0 win over the Marlins
12-0 win over the Braves (Scherzer’s first career W)
Rookie of the Year: Brandon Allen (for defense, if not his offense)
I’m sure other options will come to mind.

Mark's HR at Citi
was 462 ft, IIRC. The 481-ft homer was at Chase.
Sadly, the 481 footer was the longest of the season until the last or 2nd to last day. :-(

Oh, that's right
Mark did still win the Golden Sledgehammer, though.

Yup!
I’m pretty happy for that.

Do you know who hit the longest of the season?

Some guy with the Reds
of whom I’ve never heard. “Wladimir Balentien”, according to HitTracker.

I'll second the nomination
for Performance Of The Year of the bullpen’s extra-inning no-hitter.
Granted, it was against the Padres, but… hey, it still counted when ZOMGSanchez did it??

It may have been against the Padres
But it was still a great reversal after our closer gave up a three run homer to David freaking Eckstein.

This
is also true, and the fact that that game went from high to low to high was part of the reason why I nominated it for Game Of The Year.

Webb got the no decision in that game.

Oh, I thought he got the win.
Either way, even though he stunk, that was probably the most hopeful I was this entire season — after beating the Rox in the opener. That’s why I nominated it.
Who got the win? Was it that one Tommy Peña guy we traded for Brandon Allen?
I have a shrine dedicated to Mark Reynolds, wherein I keep his bobblehead, signed baseball, and jersey T-shirt.
Yeah it was Pena.
Except it was Tony not Tommy. :P

That was
the joke. ;-)

Well
That was the only time we were above .500 the entire year. :-(

Incidentally,
look at the top 3 vote-getters for MVP in 2006 and 2007. We had NO contributions from one of them this year, (Orlando Hudson…. well, okay, so AJ Pollack) a single game from another, (Brandon Webb) and only marginal contributions from the third (Eric Byrnes). We got marginal contributions from the top 2 last year, (Webb and CoJack) and the 3rd place vote-getter regressed offensively. (Droo, although his defense really picked up)
It’s easy to see why we did so poorly this year.

Already been nominated.

I'm amused
that some of the trivia quiz answers are creeping their way into the comments. Granted, some of that stuff was pretty interesting, and researching information for it turned up a lot of things I wouldn’t have expected, so that’s cool.
Most of the stuff I could think of for nominations has already been covered, so I’ll have to work on it some more.
Not going there
You are, however, a shoo-in for Best Supporting Meatballs…

Good suggestions. Only one to add would be for performance of the year Oeltjen’s first game should be nominated where he tallied an OF assist, SB, and HR.

Let's see
You nominated eight performances and have seconded at least two. Do you want the ballot for this one to look like the election for California governor? :-)

Can we
make it be a butterfly ballot, so only a select few will actually choose?
