New Info on Montero to Sox
http://bottomlinesox.com/2009/01/whats-a-catcher-worth.html
Basically says the Sox are refocusing their catching options on Montero instead of Salty. Outlines the prospects that could be in play, but likely no Buchholz, which would have been too big a steal to contemplate. Puts Bowden and Bard out as probable trade candidates.
Peter Gammons is a part of the talk, as well, which may add some weight to it’svalidity. Of course, talks with Veritek would have to fall through for any of this to happen I think.
With the addition of Skelton and the extention to Snyder, we sure do seem heavy in catching. Of course, catching is probably like pitching in that you can never have enough of it...if it's good.

Sorry
Guess I kind of pre-empted the purpose of this! :-(

Thanks a lot!
For ruining my first-ever Fanpost! ;)
To be fair, yours looks a might bit better than mine.

If I hadn't already been half-way through mine
I’d have promoted it and saved myself the bother.
In other words, “It’s not you, it’s me.” :-)

Well,
I think it’s a VERY nice FanPost, Counsellmember.
IIRC, my first time was much less memorable.

Hey, thanks!
I think for my next post, I’ll write something about that Unit guy signing with the Gi…ohhhhh damn.

Nah, this is just Gammons trying to get the Sox a free catcher.
He did this with Martin too. Tommorrow you’ll be hearing, “Sox shift focus to Snyder, unwilling to part with Lugo”.

I'm just shocked
that Gammons even knows there are teams west of the Hudson.

gammons
has been the one guy in national sports media predicting diamondbacks wins every year. he holds it up and pretends he’s hard for the d’backs.

And Jon Heyman,
who predicted the Dbacks to go to the WS each of the past 2 seasons.

Well,
the Sox’ pursuit of Montero has been corroborated by several sources, just none recently, and it DOES make sense.

While it may make sense, it is
still the Red Sux. I’m sorry, but they lost their lovable underdog appeal after they finally won a WS after 86 years. In my mind, they are nothing more than Yankees Lite: All the brash arrogance without the rings to back them up.
From purely a fans POV, I just don’t like dealing with the Sux or the yankees.

I don't like it either,
and to batster’s chagrin, I completely agree with you about the Red Sux. But, they do have the saving grace of having given us Josh Byrnes. Also, I think that a straight up Bowden-for-Montero trade would be a net gain for us and a net loss for them, so I like the idea.
On another note, what were Miggy’s parents thinking when they named him after a Mitsubishi SUV?

Nice link
However, after seeing that Monetro’s name means “Mountain Warrior” I am suddenly less keen on trading him.
And trading with the Sox or the Yanks is all the more wonderful if you are percieved to have bested them for value. Baseball just wouldnt be as fun without somewhere to direct my hate. :)

Timely observation
for a Westerner, ’skins, however as with paper, gunpowder and the noodle, the Chinese were years ahead of us on the Miggy / Mitsubishi question.
Thank you for letting me talk

Latest rumblings
[Since my original post is now some way down the page, looks like this FanPost is proving useful after all, hooray!]
At this point, the Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks clearly feel there is a fit. The Diamondbacks have a catcher to deal and the Red Sox have prospects to trade, and it is only a matter of finding the right match. Unless, of course, something better comes along…. According to one major league source, the Diamondbacks are seeking only a comparable prospect in return – be it a pitcher or a positional player – but the sides have yet to identify a comparable talent that would make the deal work for both sides.
However, Nick Piecoro disagrees
We’re hearing the Diamondbacks aren’t getting the impression that the Red Sox are zeroing in on catcher Miguel Montero. The clubs are still talking — or maybe we should say they are again talking — and the Sox have tweaked their offer, but it apparently is not to the point where satisfies the Diamondbacks.
:
WEEI also talks about negotiations, saying:
Arizona has never targeted Clay Buchholz or Masterson in its discussions with the Sox. The team has been interested in Bowden, and presumably, given its desire to receive a starter in return for Montero, it would need more than reliever Daniel Bard in a deal.

New blog
by Piecoro.
Painful zinger at the end of the Miggy section:
A year after they dealt Carlos Quentin when they didn’t need to, the Diamondbacks deserve kudos for not making a similar mistake with Montero.
