Diamondbacks CEO Moorad resigns
From AZ Central
The Diamondbacks announced Friday that Jeff Moorad, general partner and chief executive officer, is stepping down. Team President Derrick Hall was promoted to President and CEO... Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick said. "Jeff was an integral part of the D-Backs’ many achievements on and off of the field since joining the organization in 2004. However, it was necessary for him to tender his resignation with the organization as he pursues the acquisition of the San Diego Padres."
It seems Moorad's purchase of the Padres is a good deal further along than being merely pursued:
Moorad said Friday he heads a "small but significant" group of investors that has an exclusive right to complete the specifics of negotiations with Padres owner John Moores. Moorad said he hopes the transaction can be completed in the next three months. Moorad will maintain his share of Diamondbacks ownership but would have to sell that if his effort to purchase the Padres is successful, Kendrick said. Kendrick would not reveal what share of the team Moorad owns but said "it is not an insignificant amount." Moorad's development of a group to purchase the Padres had reached the point when Major League Baseball rules required him to leave his job with Arizona, Kendrick said.
"We’ve made some mistakes, and we’ll make others. But we feel very good about these signings. This sets a good course." — Jeff Moorad, after signing the Huge Manatee and Troy Glaus. Other things for which Moorad probably needs to be thanked include the trade and extension for - whaddya know - his former client, Shawn Green and the extension given to Eric Byrnes. Good luck, San Diego. You'll need it.

Aw, dangit
Can I change my vote to “The press conference tomorrow announcing the new Doctor”? No? Okay, I’ll stick with the MLB Network, then.
"That's a cop-out, and you know it, and it breaks my heart into a thousand pieces that we ain't gonna save America with your blog today."
Seems kinda weird
Given Tennant is playing the role through 2010. It’s a bit like announcing now who’ll replace Eric Byrnes in left-field when his contract expires…
I was surprised, too.
Maybe someone put some money on it and needs a payout.

In retrospect
It’s obvious that they want to give us a year to get the inevitable “Who the hell is that?” out of our system.

I'm not sure how this works
but it seems strange that he was out there speaking to fans on behalf of the D-Backs (and presumably making decisions that will affect this season) while he was planning the purchase of another team.
I feel kinda “meh” about his departure. Most of the decision-makers are still around, so I don’t know if we’ll see much of a change.

Well, as we have a habit
of blaming Moorad for most of the bad moves and crediting J.Byrnes for most of the good moves, (in most cases, rightfully) I guess this is a chance to test that theory.

That's true
On the plus side, Byrnes seems to deal with the public much better that Moorad. Even if the decisions don’t change, the presentation will probably be easier to accept.

I think
the promotion of Hall means that Derrick will even moreso be the face of the FO.

Does this move reveal something about Moorad's insight?
Taking over what may be the worst franchise in sports right now, given the situation? I say it could be read that way. But more details will certainly be interesting.

"What may be the worst franchise in sports right now"?
The Padres still have Peavy, won 89 games just a year ago, and were division champs in ‘05 and ’06. It’s not like he’s buying the Lions.

Well.
Moorad’s addition means they might keep Peavy. But the divorce has their payroll in shambles and their ownership as a group loves the Moneyball system, despite having players poorly suited for the system. You’ll have to excuse some hyperbole. It happens on the internet sometimes.
Oops, there, see. I did it again.
Piecoro has a
bit more detailed piece online today on this move.

Indeed.
Nicky P has a blog entry.
Interesting quote:
What did Moorad mean to the Diamondbacks?
Say what you will about some of the player-personnel moves to which Moorad has been linked, but he was instrumental, along with Kendrick, in maneuvering the club into a more-sound financial place than it was when he arrived. They’re losing someone renowned for being an excellent negotiator and deal-maker, someone who knew just about everyone in the game and who had a significant financial stake in the team.
And another:
It seems doubtful that Byrnes would leave, considering he has seven years left on his contract and has a stake in ownership. But you never know. Fun fact: Byrnes’ wife has family in San Diego.
Please no?
There are comments there from levski and D-hacks as well.
In case it hasn’t yet been posted, here’s Nick’s eulogy for Moorad as well.
