Gameday Thread, #142: 9/7 vs. Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Max Scherzer
RHP, 0-2, 2.65

Clayton Kershaw
LHP, 3-5, 4.50

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Whoops. I was convinced that this game was starting at 5, and had sort of scheduled my day around that assumption.  Well, we're in the top of the fifth right now, leading 3-2, and we've already chased off Kershaw.  Scherzer is looking pretty solid so far.

Apologies for botching this so badly, guys.  Let's get back into first place!

Two out single for CoJack

Be nice to pad the lead if CY can get a hit here.

Instead, a strike out

10th K for Scherzer

Unlikely that Max’ll match his debut for a while- though I wouldn’t put it past him in the future- but he’s locked it down since he gave up those runs in the first.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

11!

He’s struck out the side for both the fifth and sixth inning. Looking good.

Lead-off double from Reynolds!

Nearly a home run!

Reynolds steals third base!

I’d like to thank whoever it was that taught our corner infielders some speed in the off-season.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

Urgh

And Snyder misses the bunt on the suicide squeeze, baserunner lost.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why call for the bunt

From a guy who’s got a double and a homer already today?

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And why oh why

did it look like Reynolds was being congratulated when he went into the dugout?

by TwinnerA on Sep 7, 2008 6:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know

Maybe on the steal at third? Or maybe it was more of a rueful congratulations- Reynolds did his job out there, it was Snyder failing to make contact that got the out.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

Scherzer walks Ethier to start off the bottom of the sixth

His first walk of the day.

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:11 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely

11 Ks in 5 innings isn’t a bad game at all from the rookie.

Single for Manny

Runners at the corner, no outs. Come on, Max, get some outs here.

Great, and Qualls warming up. Why didn’t we tattoo the diagram onto Melvin’s forearm?

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

Tie game

Stupid James Loney.

Yeah, he's stupid

and he looks like of Looney too.

Kershaw didn't even hit today?

That’s a short outing.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:21 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He had to have

He pitched 4 innings. ESPN says he had zero AB’s, but that must be wrong.

by TwinnerA on Sep 7, 2008 6:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ah, never mind

He had a sacrifice, so he doesn’t get an AB.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

Only one run allowed by Qualls

Let’s get that lead back!

3 people here

That must be a record low.

For the past few years, yeah

I was pretty surprised when I got home and realized no one had started up a thread already.

Sort of.

Kind of like the Diamondbacks in this series.

Today’s not looking so bad though.

Rauch in to pitch

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If anything...

This is somewhat more disappointing than the last two days, because we still have hope.

by Azreous on Sep 7, 2008 6:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't have hope

How could anyone based on what you’ve seen this inning?

by TwinnerA on Sep 7, 2008 6:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At this point in the other two games, we were down 7-0. I’ve got more hope we can come back here.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 6:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't have much.

But two runs is doable. Maybe we got all the defensive lapses out of our system.

Tomorrow's game

Hopefully good Petit will reappear and maybe Lincecum is running out of steam. He’s over 190 innings pitched this season after pitching 140 plus last season.

by TwinnerA on Sep 7, 2008 7:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus

If we can batter him around, it’ll hurt his Cy Young numbers.

"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."

by kishi on Sep 7, 2008 7:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I kinda wonder.

If we did batter him around pretty good, would Sabathia become the front runner?

by Azreous on Sep 7, 2008 7:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still think Webb's in there

if he can it turned around. No way Sabathia should get it after pitching bad for Cleveland in the AL for half the season and then moving to the NL.

by TwinnerA on Sep 7, 2008 7:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not the last word of course

But I do follow the Cy Young Predictor on ESPN and they still have Webb in first.

We know damn sure whoever loses this race ain’t winning the wild card, so that’s one bonus.

The D-Backs

are quickly going from something worth following every day to something I check in on when the matchup is good (like today’s Scherzer-Kershaw matchup). But with finishes like today’s, I’m sure they can get even less attention. Glad I missed this one.

What a day

I see it was quiet in here. Clearly we’re all so depressed about this team right now that none of the authors popped in before the 5th (I don’t blame you for the time lapse, kishi, it was odd to have a ‘regular’ Sunday start for once) and nobody even started a regular Fan Post for it. How sad have we gotten? I don’t know if it’s sadder that we don’t care, or if it’s sadder that the team keeps meeting our expectations – LOW! Wow…. what a horrible weekend. What a horrible couple of weeks. :(

This team was just begging the Dodgers to take the west… and they did. I just hope we can take it back.

by snakecharmer on Sep 7, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was at my buddy's house

watching both the Cardinals play the 49ers and the Dbacks/Dodgers game.

Hasn’t been this quiet in here since early 2007.

3 errors there in the 7th pretty much sum up the season it seems.

I’d like to say, hey, at least I went .500 today, but all my friends know I am MUCH more passionate about baseball and the DBacks, so today was a day to forget.

Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong.

why was it so windy today?

Politicians in the area?

;-p

We should have scored more than we did. Good grief, the niners had 5 turnovers.

5 turnovers!?!

The part of me that lives in Arizona says “Woohoo!”
The part of me that grew up watching the 49ers says “Ack! Thptptptpt!”

Hmmm

I used to think the best thing about baseball was that there was always tomorrow to pick yourself up, but now with loss after crucial loss it’s becomming one of the most annoying aspects of the game

Still, at least the World of Warcraft looks rosey…. (I take comforts where I can ;) )

So...time for another drink then?
