Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Deep breath, and here we go: probably the most important series of the year for Arizona. It's just gone 6pm and I am still at work, as Mrs. SnakePit had to take the car to get the A/C repaired. I'm quite impressed it survived the whole summer, reaching September before conking out. We debated whether or not to try and survive until the weather cools, but a couple of days of 2/55 air-conditioning [two windows down, driving at 55mph...] convinced us otherwise.
There's really not much more I can add about tonight's game. We all know how crucial it is: we all know how much we need our starters to get back into the groove again over the weekend. We need to take advantage of every chance, score early, keep Mandy in check and take the (undoubtedly loud and raucous) Chavez Ravine crowd out of things. It's not going to be easy, but if we don't take at least one of the next three games, we don't deserve to be in the playoffs - it's basically as simple as that.
I hope to be home close to first-pitch, but feel free to start without me. All together now: BEAT...EL...AY... BEAT...EL...AY... BEAT...EL...AY... BEAT...EL...AY...

Let's go, D-Backs!
Huge series, obviously. Time for Haren and Webby to come back with a vengeance.

Fun Facts
Or, Really Inane Facts, depending on your point of view.
In 15 games against LA this season, we’re 8-7. In those 8 wins, our run differential is 23, whereas in the 7 losses, it’s 26. We’ve lost by a maximum of 7 and won by a maximum of 6. And believe it or not, the bullpen has only been involved in two of those decisions – losses by Slaten (7/18 in extras) and Lyon (7/20 a game nobody needs to remember).
Meanwhile...
In other games with playoff implications, the Phillies are 3-0 up on the Mets in the eighth,, the Cubs are getting hammered 9-0 by the Reds and Milwaukee have just gone ahead of San Diego 2-1 in the fourth inning.
Myers with an enormous game. 8 innings of 0 run, 3 hit, 10 K ball. Where did that come from??? Poor Philly fans must be driven completely batty by that guy. Things are interesting right now, though: bottom 9, 1 out, 1st and 3rd, Lidge pitching, Beltran up, 3-1 count.

Today’s lineup:
S. Drew ss .288
D. Eckstein 2b .364
C. Jackson lf .294
A. Dunn rf .240
C. Tracy 1b .270
M. Reynolds 3b .240
C. Young cf .244
C. Snyder c .239
D. Haren p .206
Dunn is back in rf and Trace gets the start at 1b. We only have 3 LHBs in the order against the right Lowe..
this Eckstein deal was huge if only for the fact that it pushed CY out of that 2 hole and really solidified the top of the lineup.
By the way, over on Foxsports.com Rosenthal actually calls Drew a darkhorse MVP candidate.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
Yeah, it’s a pretty idiotic article IMO… he tries to make the case that the NL MVP is wide open, with 10 legitimate candidates. Hmmm… I see maybe 4 legitimate candidates: Pujols, Braun, Berkman, Reyes. And really, it’s not much of a race. It should be Pujols’ award.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
Though there's the usual argument
Which to some extent I agree with, that how ‘valuable’ a player can be if his team don’t qualify for the playoffs?
but in a watered down NL i don’t see that applying:
cubs: ramirez? uh, no.
dodgers: manram? no way.
dbacks: drew, cojack?? c’mon
mets: reyes, wright, beltran? they’ve all been very good, but none have been standouts.
phillies: utley? huge first half, big slip in the second half.
brewers: braun? perhaps, but pujols has an ops a full 200 points better.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"

Wolf has been on fire at the plate lately. He’s really tearing it up since moving to the lead off spot.
he’s been fantastic… MVP fantastic, though? don’t think so.

Rosenthal actually calls Drew a darkhorse MVP candidate.
Well, if he called him a “dark horse” it doesn’t sound like he’s putting him in the drivers seat.
It doesn't matter what shade the horse is.
Drew’s still back on the starting block in the MVP conversation. Simple as that.
but he doesn’t even deserve to be in the conversation. he’s 36th in the league in OPS, #7 among MIs.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"

and he’s #3 with an AZ connection (Uggla, Hardy, Drew)

Damn AZ'nans
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
The addition of Eck and Dunn has given us two guys that really battle and drive up the pitch count. Both of them can protect the plate a foul the close one off all day long.
Eckstein is better.
He’s so gritty!!
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Just beat me to it. :-)
Presume Upton’s head is still ringing, as he’s 2-for-4 lifetime off Lowe. Pleased to see Eckstein has some great numbers (13-for-29) against the sinkerballer and with luck, that should pose a potent combo with Drew (an amazing 14-for-23!). Not so good: Jackson (2-for-15), Young (3-for-20) and Clark (4-for-32). Small sample size applies, as usual for batter vs. pitcher matchups.
Welp.
That’s the lineup I like to see for us. It’d be nice if Manny’d stop hitting .700 against us as well.
This Series
is pretty much a must win series if we want to make the playoffs who ever wins this is pretty much nl west champs cause the remaining scheduels for both teams are not too bad at all
please god win dbacks
the starting rotation needs to get there shit together haren and webb need to work out whatever they have been struggling with lately same with RJ
Lets go dbacks
it’s a big series, but unless either team sweeps, i don’t think the season will be over after it.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
Yeah
Season’s a long way from being ‘over’.
Typically, one would think LA, being behind, “needs” this series more, but given our upcoming 4 games in St Louis and that the Dodgers are playing better than us lately, I think we need it a little more.
If they win two of three, I’d say our chances down the stretch arent real good, per the schedule – and also cuz it supposes Haren and/or Webb maybe didnt pitch that great.
This first one is the biggest game of the year, imo.
by Diamondhacks on Sep 5, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Can't argue
It’s a real tone-setter, and the pitching match-up might be the closest too. I do think the Dodgers “need” to win more than we do, simply because they’re behind. But in a three-game set, especially at this time of the season, there’s a huge difference between winning two of three and one of three.

From the umpire tonight. Not getting the high strike, or the low one. If the umpire is going to have a tight zone, might behoove our hitters to be patient.
Yeah, you’ll need it against the deadly patience of the Dodger lineup.

That play was like the 2008 D-Backs' & Dodgers' seasons in a nutshell
Someone falls asleep on defense, someone else falls asleep on the basepaths. It was almost zen.

We got lucky there. Poor throw by Reynolds. He seemed to just lolly pop it over to 1st instead of setting and firing it over there.
That's absolutely true
but I stand by Wednesday’s point that, in addition to Reynolds obvious struggles, Chad Tracy is a miserable first baseman. Does this guy ever knock a ball down? He’s like a matador out there

I know it's cliche by now
but… Manny being Manny. Few players are gonna make that mistake.

Awful throw, but we get a break as Ramirez turns to second and the ricochet favors us.

So soco doesn't believe me
But I think Reynolds is the quickest one on our team to get spooked. It is almost like you can tell when he walks up if he is going to play it well or not.
What a crazy random happenstance!
Which is unfortunate
Because we’ve seen him do otherwise- I recall one point in July or so where we were getting walloped, and he was the guy in the clubhouse who said, straight out to the media, “Boy, we suck right now,” if I may paraphrase. He really seemed like he was going to take the opportunity to step up and lead there, and they had a few games after that, so I was hoping…

Dear Brandon Webb,
see how Haren is sucking? Please don’t do that tomorrow. Thank you.
Back to regular programming.
Nothing like have Ace 2.0 on the mound and yet feeling like the game is over after 2 innings.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
That earlier talk
of Haren and Webb even approximating a modern day Schilling and Johnson looks pretty foolish right now.
Since mid July, Haren’s had one start with fewer hits allowed than innings. I’d like to keep the faith, but let’s face it, Danny has a history of this. Not his fault – that’s just the pitcher he is.
by Diamondhacks on Sep 5, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, seeing as how Haren walks hardly anyone,
that means his WHIP is still pretty good, if he’s only allowing a few more hits than innings.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Lack of walks is his strong suit
but the problem isnt just the number of hits.
First 21 starts => 10 homers
Last 8 (incl tonite) => 8 homers
It’s the kind of hits, which WHIP doesnt account for. He’s getting hammered pretty hard

The radio team was saying the team looked like they were feeling defeated and downtrodden, too, but that was back when it was 4-0, I think.
"Only one thing is gonna walk you through this, Mal. Belief."
They may
“look” that way, but what does that really signify, I wonder? Didnt they “look” that way after six innings on Wednesday, before they made that great comeback? Most everybody “looks” flat when they dont hit and Lowe’s a pretty good pitcher. I just resent Grace’s hindsight implication, in the seventh inning, that it was clear in the first that the Dbacks didnt come to play today. It’s just bullshit. They got outpitched.
Who made an idotic baserunning gaffe in the first to squelch a rally? Manny. Who made a selfish baserunning decision later on to end another rally? Ethier. Did they come to play? Are they more focused than the Dbacks? Heck, no. They’re getting much better pitches to hit.
by Diamondhacks on Sep 6, 2008 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s amazing how flat a team can look when they’re facing a pitcher that’s throwing a great game.
;-)
To Kishi's point
it’s a little different saying the team looks flat, down 4-0 in the fourth or so, with Lowe throwing darts. I’m not saying there’s no psychology at play at that point, or that part of the score discrepancy wasnt due to some subpar Dbacks’ hitting. At some point, maybe they start to mail it in a bit.
But Grace is saying something entirely different, implying that the team that’s been in first place all year packed it in in the first inning of a one run game against their arch rival.

Actually
the opposite is basically true, at least compared to other NL teams this season. The Diamondbacks are among the poorest in the league (after park adjs) at getting runners on to start a rally, and we’re about league average in terms of hitting with runners in scoring position -and/or RISP with two outs.
