Gameday Thread, #114: 8/6 vs Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Arizona Diamondbacks

Randy Johnson
44, LHP, 9-7, 4.35

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

After the lengthy winless streak, Johnson is now making up for lost time, having put together five victories in a row. That's not bad, until you hear that is only the equal fourteenth longest winning run of his career. He has won eight starts in a row or more on seven separate occasions, all the way up to his run from 08/11/95 through 05/02/97, where Johnson won sixteen consecutive starts, with an ERA of 1.62. Be nice if he could make a run at that...

Afternoon game, so I'll keep this brief. Might be about, but probably only be active for lunch...

Hey everyone, I’m new.

I can’t believe it’s so early! Anyways, hopefully Johnson can keep it up, and we can sweep the Pirates, and hope the Cardinals beat up on the Dodgers!! Nice to see CY hitting again!

GOO DBACKS!

Hi there, welcome!!

Welcome to the ‘PIt! Glad to have you, let us know if you have any questions.

Excellent.

One of these days, we should have our own get-together. Zephon and I have been discussing, on and off, heading to the Auld Dubliner sometime before SnakePitFest.

You can do that online now, you know

Made it quite a bit simpler to get a new driver’s license for me, since I didn’t know where the nearest DMV was.

This is true.

That’s how I got my current ID, and how my sister got hers when she turned 21 a couple months ago.

I don't get it

In California, they take your photo and thumbprint and signature. You can’t do that online… unless it’s just a renewal.

Mine was just an address change

I won’t have to renew my license here for about 35 more years…

Umm...

I don’t have a driver’s license, ‘cuz i can’t drive. I lost my old ID so I need to get a duplicate. For some reason the service az website doesn’t work for me.

burke

lol he is actually starting to hit every so often now… I kind of feel bad for him, no matter what he does he’ll never get the nod from the fans! haha oh well.

Good lineup. I would be kind of tentative to do this since it’s been working so well lately, but what do you guys think about Romero leading off? and push everyone down? Romero gets on base like a lead off hitter, and Drew has been hitting very well.. no? Just a thought.

by ZonaBacks10 on Aug 6, 2008 3:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Romero leadoff

I don’t know, I’d like to see Romero get a few more ABs first. He still feels kind of shiny and new to me.

I want to be in Haren's harem.

by luckycc on Aug 6, 2008 3:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, Burke doesn't hit.

But he does draw walks sometimes. I feel bad for him too.

Anyway, Drew steps up in the leadoff spot somehow, and Romero seems waaay too untested to lead off. To me.

Good move or bad move?

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Aug 6, 2008 3:27 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dumb move.

As I already pointed out, he’s got a career ERA of 6.50 at Coors.

Then again, the worst moves the Rockies made were the ones they didn’t: holding onto Fuentes and Holliday, for example.

by soco on Aug 6, 2008 4:08 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What?

He’s a Scott Boras client, with numbers boosted by Coors Field. How can holding onto him when the Rox are well out of contention NOT be a bad move??

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 6, 2008 4:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Didn't they

extend him during the offseason, before they realized they wouldn’t be good? What are they supposed to do? “Hey we just came out of our first World Series appearance, let’s ship out one our best players?”

by soco on Aug 6, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At the trade deadline,

with plenty of teams looking for OFs, (Mets come to mind) they should have held onto him? Are you high??

by soco on Aug 6, 2008 4:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.

Instead, they should base their entire future on an aging roster and a fortuitous 20-some game stretch where they lucked their way into the World Series, especially when over halfway through the season, they’re almost certainly out of contention.

Tim, can I get a hit of whatever you have packed in that bong?

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 6, 2008 4:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But

It’s still the same team that won the NL Pennant, right? And how do you figure that it’s an aging team outside of Helton? We can’t always assume that the cellar teams are nothing but farm teams for the rest of the league like Pittsburgh.

I would’ve traded Fuentes but not Holliday.

by AZSEAfan on Aug 6, 2008 4:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kip Wells?

When Todd Helton is your cleanup hitter, you’re officially an aging team.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.

by DbacksSkins on Aug 6, 2008 4:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So Helton and that's it?

I’d kill to one of their top offensive performers play here, and they have quite a few doing well. Pitching always has, and probably always will, be the downfall of the Rockies but if they can figure that out they could be a very scary team.

Hello

My name is Penelope Cruz. I destroy no-hitters. It’s what I do.

I have to get back to work, but the perfect game will be gone in the fifth.

Switching between St Penelope's voice..

...and your own in the same post is disturbing, Jim.

How do you know

that wasn’t all St. P?

ESPN

I’m guessing Dodger fans are on the conversation board ragging on the attendance. Oh it’s nice to have found this site!!

Amusingly,

there was a comment on either the ESPN Dan Haren extension story or the FoxSports one, and it was a Dodger fan. They said something like, “Haren will probably spend at least 2 of those years recovering from surgeries.”

Idiots.

Then again,

I’m not quite sure what I EXPECTED from the fans that cheered Manny Ramirez striking out.

I assume they confused Dan Haren with Rich Harden.

Hey, give them a break

It’s not their fault that they only know to cheer when people tell them to cheer! And they don’t want to sit through full games! That’s nine whole innings, plus you want them to actually pay attention? What kind of monster are you?

Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.

I stand corrected.

:-P

Sometimes...

I hate Dodgers fans so much. They’re really the lowest form of humanity.

Where have you gone Mike Fetters?

So...

are pennants won by attendance now?

Knock off the hippie crap, strap on a helmet, and start shooting. This is baseball, Diamondbacks, I want you to storm that beach like it's Normandy!

Exactly

Didn’t know fans won games. That’s there comeback for anything, how there is more dodger fans at dbacks games. lol

The fact that

both the Rays and Fish are in contention clearly disproves this theory.

True

I’m glad them having more fans has gotten them to… 2nd place.

I find it difficult to keep track of all the Pirates’ trades. I need a flowchart.

I want to be in Haren's harem.
