Dan Haren signed to extension
The Diamondbacks and right-hander Dan Haren have agreed to a $44.75 million contract extension that runs through 2012 and includes a club option for 2013, a deal that will be announced today at a 3 p.m. news conference at Chase Field. The contract, which nullifies Haren’s previous deal, is worth $41.25 million over the next four seasons and includes a $15.5 million option for 2013 with a $3.5 million buyout.Haren will be paid $7.5 million in 2009, $8.25 million in ’10, $12.75 million in ’11 and $12.75 million in ’12.
I'm thrilled to see him get signed up long-term. Now let's get Webb an extension too, and we're a long-term threat to this division.

D'oh, sorry!
Forgot to check before I posted.

Do we get a discount for last night?
:-) I’m very please to see this news. Though here’s hoping he ends up doing better than the other recent long-term contracts we’ve signed, e.g. Byrnes, Tracy, Young…

I’d say one big difference is that Haren’s earned the big money. =)

Tracy earned it too,
with his big 2005. He’s also our only LH slugger. And I still like the CY deal, even though he’s underperformed this year.

Good for Haren
But I am more concerned about the extension (or lack thereof) for Webb. Webb’s few comments/quotes in the paper and the tone of his voice on the radio when he said he wasn’t going to negotiate any more during the season and that if things didn’t get done in the off-season he would just test free agency scare me. Eek!

Me too
I really hope the DBacks find some way to make a deal with Webb. Getting Haren to stick around is nice. He has had a great season, and was pretty good in Oakland. But, Webb has been fantastic for our team for years and has proved himself to be one of the best pitchers in the league. If the DBacks let him get to free agency, we can kiss him goodbye. I have this nightmare of the pitching starved Yankees snatching him up. Ick.
But anyway, Haren has pitched great this year and I am happy to see him rewarded.

And actually...
I have a question now. If the DBacks are paying this much for Haren, how much would they have to pay Webb to get him to stay? I wonder how far apart Webb and the team were in their negotiations. I mean, this seems like a good deal for Haren. How much is Webb wanting?

this should help not hurt
it’s really not that much cash, considering… and locking up a pitching-mate for Webb should provide incentive for him that the D-Backs are serious about their future.

Good point
I was just thinking that it shows commitment, and Webb knows he won’t be forced to plow a lonely furrow, like Johnson in 2004.
Oh, and I hid your fanpost [and the resulting apology!] on the topic, just in case you’d wondered where it had gone. :-)

So, Webb said on the radio that they had agreed to the money in a new deal already, but there were some other issues they hadn’t agreed on yet. I hope that means they are close and can get the deal done as soon as the season ends. It would be pretty great to have Webb and Haren here for a few years to come.

I'm sorta wondering
whether they were talking about incentives, or something like that. For example, if Webb wanted a bonus for winning the World Series or the Cy Young or something, since the Byrnes administration doesn’t do incentives.
Anyway, I am a bit alarmed, since he seemed a little miffed at the FO.

Thanks Jim.
The only thing that my post might have made clearer was the comparative dollars and cents. Basically, we’re paying $2.5M more next year, $1.5M more in 2010, and then we’re able to lock up Haren for three years at just under $13M per. This makes a ton of sense to me. Haren may not be a $20M per guy on the open market, but he’s certainly a guy who would fetch upwards of $15M per. Well done Byrnes. Well done.

Agreed.
This deal makes a ton of sense for the Dbacks. I only hope there’s no jealousy from Webb’s end.

I don't feel
That Webb is really the jealous type, somehow… If he’s jealous of that deal, I’m also pretty sure the D-backs would give him exactly the same one!

I'm sure
the Dbacks would sign Webby to the same deal in a heartbeat. I don’t really think Webb is the jealous type either, but he might feel a bit put out that the Dbacks completed an extension with the traded-for Dan Haren before their native son, Brandon Webb.

Updated the post
With more details of the deal. It replaces his previous contract, which gave him a salary of $5.5 million in 2009 with a $6.75 million option for 2010, so he’s getting a bump in those two years as well. I presume that’s the price you pay for the extension…
