Gameday Thread, #112: 8/4 vs. Pirates

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Back home we go, and after a tough road-trip against divisional opponents, we have a bit of break, with a home stand against two NL teams, currently with identical records of 51-60. We really should be looking, at the very least, to win four of these six games. With Haren, Webb and Johnson going for us in this series, a sweep is by no means impossible, since over their last five starts, their lines are:
Haren: 3-1, 1.95 ERA, 38 K, 5 BB
Webb: 3-0, 1.75 ERA, 30 K, 8 BB
Johnson: 5-0, 1.39 ERA, 25 K, 2 BB
That's a total of 15 starts, an 11-1 record, a 1.71 ERA over 105.1 innings, and a K:BB ratio of 93:15. Our rotation should certainly be the ones doing the pillaging here, not the Pirates.
The question-mark may seem to hang more over our offense, after a series in Los Angeles where they scored a total of nine runs in four games. However, that was against the best pitching staff in the National League (ERA+ of 121) - we now go from the sublime to the ridiculous and face the very worst staff. And it's not even close: Pittsburgh's ERA+ is 80, a long way below 15th-placed Florida, at 91. On the road, they've allowed 6.32 runs per game, the worst such figure in the National League since the 2000 Cubs (6.36). So, if Los Angeles pitching was the disease that ailed our offense, then Pittsburgh are arriving with a large dose of the cure...
It being Monday, I will be entering stealth mode for the game, viewing it from the wifi-less, yet Stella Artois lush, environment which is the Grand Avenue Tavern. So no comments from me...

Yea, O Snakepitters, but do not fear Jim's absence.
For with the return of DbacksSkins, you shall surely be accompanied by the predictably steady and uncontrollable stream of inane comments, both on- and off-topic.
A thin substitute for Jim’s posting, to be sure, yet still a substitute.

Our lineup
S. Drew ss
O. Hudson 2b
C. Jackson lf
C. Tracy 1b
M. Reynolds 3b
A. Romero rf
C. Young cf
C. Snyder c
D. Haren p
Romero’s gotten the start in right field in seven or eight of our last ten games, which has to make us all feel a bit happier- I only hope Burke doesn’t take the position for SnakePitFest, or else mrssoco might be escorted from the stadium.

I’ve always criticized showboating when Albert Pujols or Barry Bonds do it too. But it’s a little bit different when you’re a HOF player than when you’re a borderline power slugger.

Hmmm.....
Barry Bonds?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Ugh
DbacksSkins types with his mouth?
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
In fact,
I do. I am a quadruple amputee. A “nugget”, if you will.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
you're from Denver?
Bob Melvin: Black Denarian in disguise.
man looks like PITT is throwing up a team of inexperienced minor leaguers
with Laroche, Moss, Pearce
LaRoche
has the potential to be a great player though.
I still think it was dumb of LA to trade him, just to try and win this year.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
True,
but for 2 months of a 37 year old rental outfielder?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Well he helps them win now, he looks revitalized so far in LA, its only been 3 games but
LA finally has a slugger to cheer for, Dodgers havent had a legit power hitter since Beltre’s contract year back in teh day
But even with Manny,
do you really think the Dodgers are a World Series team this year?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
This doesn't even make sense.
Trading away prospects for rental players is the exact opposite of what you want to do to make yourself a long-term contender…..
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Dewitt
belongs in AA, Blake is a rentaplayer.
It was a shortsighted move orchestrated by the same man that signed Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre.
Wrong.
Dewitt, 280 AB – .257/.324/.364 79 OPS+
He had a hot month of May but has been quickly exposed by major league pitchers. By merit, he should be in AA right now – he has less than 200 at bats there and didn’t even hit all that well in the southern league (.281/.306/.466). I can only hope that he’s on the major league roster next season.
Well, they ain't going to win for the next ten years as long as Webb, Haren, Scherzer, and Parker stay here.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Great pitching and no offense
has never helped the Padres win squat. And with Boras as Scherzer’s agent, do you REALLY think he’ll stick around once his arb years are up?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Our offense can at least put up 3 or 4 runs a game.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
And if we average 3.5 runs per game,
(3 or 4, as you put it) we’re not going to win many games with our ERA at 3.89.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Total ERA at 3.89.
If Webb, Haren, and Scherzer stay at 3.00 we will win alot of games and playoff series.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Yes
but also recall that other teams don’t play their scrub pitchers during the postseason, either.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
And I will take our's over their's any day of the week.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Me too.
But our problem is the offense. Not the pitching.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
But the offense is good enough score enough runs to win games.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Given our record after we started out 12 games over .500,
I’ll wait around to make a judgment on this statement.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Then I guess our offense isn't as bad as you guys think it is.
Cause we are still in first place.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Well
the fact is, we haven’t averaged “3 or 4” runs per game.
For most of the season, anyway.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
The fact is we are STILL in first despite this offense.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Yes,
but that only applies so long as you’re still in first, and the Dodgers just got quite a bit better for this season.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
The fact is we are still in first despite the past three months of baseball.
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
Don't think I'm agreeing with you.
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
That was my next statement.
The fact is we are still in first despite the past three months of baseball.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Can't
keep relying on the rest of the division to suck more than us, though. We’ve been lucky.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
We have been doing it for over 3 months.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
What? Generally sucking?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
That's a good baseball philosophy
“Don’t worry about our offense, we’ll just rely on luck.”
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
Not really
I didn’t really consider that luck last year.
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
The bullpen, for one thing
Last season, Valverde, Pena, Cruz, and Lyon all had ERAs of 3.10 or below. This season, only Scherzer and Petit are putting up numbers below that out of the bullpen, and they’ve combined for 34.1 innings as relievers.
Plus they don’t let Augie Ojeda pitch anymore- come on, just look at his career ERA! =)
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
Looked like
O-Dawg missed that tag, frankly…

But Oh My Dog Bonifacio Is Carlos Quentin 2.0!!!!1111!!!!
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
+1
thats exactly what i was thinking…... but think more jose reyes
When Jose Reyes was 23
he hit 19 home runs in the majors.
In this, Bonifacio’s age 23 season, he’s hit one home run in AAA.
Bonifacio’s upside as a hitter is Juan Pierre. But Juan Pierre could hit .320 in his prime. Boni is a career .285 hitter in the minors.
Juan Pierre
can also drive one out from time to time.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Not really,
he has 12 home runs in his career.
That’s about the same as Boni who hit between one and two home runs a season in the minors (except in the Lancaster blasting pad where he hit seven).
Well, compared to Bonifacio's predictions,
wouldn’t that count as “from time to time”?

Wow....
That Burger King commercial did absolutely nothing but remind me of the existence (barely) of P. Diddy.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
I remember the first time I saw that ad
My first thought was “Does Burger King think anyone really cares about P. Diddy anymore?”
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
First of all, he's just Diddy now
secondly, DIDDY!? WHERE?

my thoughts are
I don’t go to BK for that very reason, that and the king scares the crap out of me
formerly Seton Hall Snake Pit. The newer simpler version.
Despite Haren's struggles,
he gave us 6 innings.
The team that continues to disappoint, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Apparently
When the FBI agent rescued Haren’s family, he left Tony’s behind.

Lemme grab my gun and start talking all raspily, like Jack Bauer.

mrsscoco totally called that
when he walked up to the plate she asked, “Did he get a home run earlier in the game?”

Nice!

It's not good
that as soon as I saw the left fielder miff that ball, my first thought was “thrown out at home”?
CY in the pickle

D'oh
Suicide squeeze doesn’t work.

I like the thought, though
I don’t recall us doing one yet this year

Yes and no
The general aggressiveness is nice to see, but I think I’m okay with just trying to bring the run in the traditional way when the pitcher is obviously struggling.
Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.
Well,
for a suicide squeeze to work, it DOES require making contact with the ball…..

Argh....
squeeze play.

Argh....
Snyder base hit would have scored CY just fine….
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
When a pitcher
or Romero or Tony Clark is up there and the opposing pitcher in Tim Lincecum, I don’t mind the squeeze, but come on, Chris Snyder has been one of our most consistent hitters this season and he does a good job of making contact, what are you thinking Melvin?!?
And Snyder gets a base hit. ALL HAIL OUR AGGRESSIVE BASERUNNING OVERLORDS!!!
Whoa!!
Tony Clark with a hit?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Atta boy TC
prove me wrong!!!
Now can we stop giving away outs to the worst pitching team in the league?
I'd prefer
if we’d stop giving runs to one of the worst teams.

I'm waiting for Grace to acknowledge
