Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Back home we go, and after a tough road-trip against divisional opponents, we have a bit of break, with a home stand against two NL teams, currently with identical records of 51-60. We really should be looking, at the very least, to win four of these six games. With Haren, Webb and Johnson going for us in this series, a sweep is by no means impossible, since over their last five starts, their lines are:
   Haren: 3-1, 1.95 ERA, 38 K, 5 BB
   Webb: 3-0, 1.75 ERA, 30 K, 8 BB
   Johnson: 5-0, 1.39 ERA, 25 K, 2 BB
That's a total of 15 starts, an 11-1 record, a 1.71 ERA over 105.1 innings, and a K:BB ratio of 93:15. Our rotation should certainly be the ones doing the pillaging here, not the Pirates.

The question-mark may seem to hang more over our offense, after a series in Los Angeles where they scored a total of nine runs in four games. However, that was against the best pitching staff in the National League (ERA+ of 121) - we now go from the sublime to the ridiculous and face the very worst staff. And it's not even close: Pittsburgh's ERA+ is 80, a long way below 15th-placed Florida, at 91. On the road, they've allowed 6.32 runs per game, the worst such figure in the National League since the 2000 Cubs (6.36). So, if Los Angeles pitching was the disease that ailed our offense, then Pittsburgh are arriving with a large dose of the cure...

It being Monday, I will be entering stealth mode for the game, viewing it from the wifi-less, yet Stella Artois lush, environment which is the Grand Avenue Tavern. So no comments from me...

Yea, O Snakepitters, but do not fear Jim's absence.

For with the return of DbacksSkins, you shall surely be accompanied by the predictably steady and uncontrollable stream of inane comments, both on- and off-topic.

A thin substitute for Jim’s posting, to be sure, yet still a substitute.

I think we were caught off-guard by a sudden appearance of a winning road trip, so there was some distraction.

Our lineup

S. Drew ss
O. Hudson 2b
C. Jackson lf
C. Tracy 1b
M. Reynolds 3b
A. Romero rf
C. Young cf
C. Snyder c
D. Haren p

Romero’s gotten the start in right field in seven or eight of our last ten games, which has to make us all feel a bit happier- I only hope Burke doesn’t take the position for SnakePitFest, or else mrssoco might be escorted from the stadium.

by dahlian on Aug 4, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The bullpen, for one thing

Last season, Valverde, Pena, Cruz, and Lyon all had ERAs of 3.10 or below. This season, only Scherzer and Petit are putting up numbers below that out of the bullpen, and they’ve combined for 34.1 innings as relievers.

Plus they don’t let Augie Ojeda pitch anymore- come on, just look at his career ERA! =)

Rule number one of agressive baserunning:

Never admit it when aggressive baserunning costs your team runs.

Rule two of aggressive baserunning: always take credit for runs that would have scored anyways (like when a runner goes first to third and the next batter doubles).

Aggressive baserunning can do no wrong.

by JUPTON10 on Aug 4, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

When Jose Reyes was 23

he hit 19 home runs in the majors.

In this, Bonifacio’s age 23 season, he’s hit one home run in AAA.

Bonifacio’s upside as a hitter is Juan Pierre. But Juan Pierre could hit .320 in his prime. Boni is a career .285 hitter in the minors.

Not really,

That’s about the same as Boni who hit between one and two home runs a season in the minors (except in the Lancaster blasting pad where he hit seven).

It's not good

that as soon as I saw the left fielder miff that ball, my first thought was “thrown out at home”?

D'oh

Suicide squeeze doesn’t work.

Not many people know the real reason Christopher Columbus wanted to find America.

I like the thought, though

I don’t recall us doing one yet this year

by snakecharmer on Aug 4, 2008 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes and no

The general aggressiveness is nice to see, but I think I’m okay with just trying to bring the run in the traditional way when the pitcher is obviously struggling.

And Snyder

is one of our better contact hitters, and just a consistent over all hitter.

by dahlian on Aug 4, 2008 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

for a suicide squeeze to work, it DOES require making contact with the ball…..

When a pitcher

or Romero or Tony Clark is up there and the opposing pitcher in Tim Lincecum, I don’t mind the squeeze, but come on, Chris Snyder has been one of our most consistent hitters this season and he does a good job of making contact, what are you thinking Melvin?!?

And Snyder gets a base hit. ALL HAIL OUR AGGRESSIVE BASERUNNING OVERLORDS!!!

by dahlian on Aug 4, 2008 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

Whoa!!

Tony Clark with a hit?

Now can we stop giving away outs to the worst pitching team in the league?

by dahlian on Aug 4, 2008 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

I'd prefer

if we’d stop giving runs to one of the worst teams.
