Gameday Thread, #127: 8/21 vs. Padres

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Our streak atop the division has been occasionally fragile - perhaps the closest was August 9th where, the Dodgers blew a 10th-inning lead that would have let them overtake us. But one stat [shamelessly stolen from Dodger Thoughts] explains why its unbroken. Since leaving second-place on April 5th, Arizona have woken up tied for first-place nine times. They are a remarkably clutch 9-0 in games played that day, having outscored our opponents 66-27 in those contests.
Tonight, with a 1.5-game lead [the Dodgers having won this afternoon], there is no such issue, but with Webb on the mound, going for his nineteenth win, I have to feel confident. He hasn't lost a game in almost two months, being 7-0 with a 2.28 ERA in his last ten outings - and a perfect five-for-five, with a 1.89 ERA, in the past month. Reineke has one major-league start under his belt, but as we've seen before [c.f. Cueto, Johnny], that doesn't necessarily mean very much.
It's been a fun series so far, with the new-found fondenss by the Diamondbacks for strolling to first overcoming an offensive indifference [our SLG this series is 32 points above our OBP!] Still, our OPS for August is .780, our best since April, and that's reflected in a healthy average of 5.33 runs per game. That's not apparently 'luck', either - our BABIP is .292, basically identical to the NL average of .294. I note, with some interest, the Dodgers are up at .325, so their recent success has the scent of over-achievement.
Should be about for this: we finished the PFFF program, and so I shouldn't have too much to do this evening. Whether I choose not do it in the living-room, or in the office, will likely determine my participation in the comments! I'll finish with another stat, this one courtesy of Gennaro Felice of SI: Padres catchers are hitting .195 this season. No other team in baseball has an entire position south of the Uecker Line.

C'mon, Webby.
Let’s get that sweep.

Actually,
it’s probably more meaningful if I say, “C’mon, hitters” instead, as I have more confidence in Webby doing his job than the hitters.

Too true.
It really does defy logic, though…. unless they were betting that we would stand pat with our lineup, the way we did last year, even in the face of the Pads getting Milton Bradley.
See? Just goes to show you should never bet.

Or maybe some early magic from Webby so we can kick back and watch our O work it’s magic throughout the game? ;-)

Even benevolent dictators have to stifle dissent to stay in power. Ugly as it is, you are duty-bound to drag Padre and Dodger fans out of their houses in the middle of the night and send them to re-education camps. Yankees fans will probably have to be liquidated outright, though.

OT: Georgia update
My navy buddy said that at 0900 Tues morning, an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer left Crete, (ended up being the USS McFaul) passed through the Bosporus and was in the Black Sea by Weds at noon. Why doesnt Augie bunt there? Safety squeeze, Reynolds runs decent at third, young pitcher on the mound. I love Augie, but he’s not a sac fly threat, and even if he walks, you got Webb up with the bases loaded, akin to kissing your sister.

I’m not from Singapore. I was raised in PHX. Nor am I from the slums in England.
I try to be geocentric but if some of the things i write on this thread are offensive to you or anybody else then I just gotta say that the words I use are very widely acceptable in PHX.
Wow, okay take a step back!

Strangest thing I've read at Gaslamp Ball, August 21st Edition:
From this post: So this list isn’t really that interesting. In my opinon not even Teixeria is as good as Agon, and with his asking price aroung $20-25M its not even a consideration.
Seriously? You really think Adrian Gonzalez is a better pick than Teixeira? I totally understand it if you’re including salary, but that phrasing implies otherwise. Weird.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Nothing like a little homerism to sway things.
But honestly, the way Gonzalez was going at the beginning of the year that statement isn’t crazy… lately, though… not so much. Gonzalez is a much inferior defender… but he’s almost Teixeira’s equal with the stick, and will probably surpass him soon since he’s a few years younger.

And Webb's ERA, at 2.74
Cruises past Santana (2.75) to take third in the NL. One more scoreless inning would take him past Volquez (2.73), but he is at 100 pitches…
And.... again,
Instead of Sally, Webb could have done that…
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Melvin understands
it’s not about the game – it’s about the season. Webb’s not only this game’s most valuable player, but the team’s most valuable, indeed irreplaceable resource going forward – and he was losing his mechanics last inning.
A manager who treats every game like the seventh game of the World Series will likely never get there :-)

if you say so… if Melvin pulled Webb b/c of his mechanics, then I have no beef with it. I doubt that was the case, though.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
Maybe we define mechanics differently
but as skins alluded to, in the seventh Brandon uncharacteristically walked the #8 hitter, then went 2-0 on Morrow, before Snyder got up to have a talk. This all with a very hot Jody Gerut on deck, and not at all similar to the earlier walk to Agon, an obvious pitch around. It’s true nobody was hitting him hard, but he was missing the zone rather badly, unintentionally, and I took that as a sign he was tiring.
by Diamondhacks on Aug 22, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions
But missing the strike zone can be attributed to a number of different things: a lapse in concentration, over pitching, or poor mechanics. Unless BoMel or the pitching coach actually notices something mechanically wrong with Webby’s delivery, I see no reason to assume it’s the latter.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
In the postgame
Melvin just confirmed he took Webby out cuz “he was tiring a little bit”. That’s all I really meant by mechanics – not that he was injured or forgot how to pitch, but just that he was tired, lost his arm angle or whatever.
When you’re Brandon Webb and six or seven pitches dont go where you want, you can call it whatever you want. I call it mechanics.

Three months?
Seriously? I thought that was about three weeks ago.
Though, Mrew’s Birthday was about two-and-a-half weeks ago, so my sense of time is obviously off right now.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Nope
It was June, during the Boston series.

Wasn't being held on
So no chance to get him out.
by Jim McLennan on Aug 22, 2008 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions
That's right
In order to throw the runner out, one opens up the infield to the batter (and subsequent batters, potentially), the only ones who can actually beat you. It’s not just the first baseman, but also the MI covering the bag.
The other benefit to holding the runner is to maintain a forceout situation, which mitigates the above somewhat, but I think the conventional wisdom is that challenging the runner opens one up to a bigger inning.
by Diamondhacks on Aug 22, 2008 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
To back this up
BABIP this year goes up by ten points when there’s a man on first, compared to bases empty – presumably largely because the first baseman is on the bag, so loses a slice of coverage on balls hit between him and the second baseman.
by Jim McLennan on Aug 22, 2008 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions
It could be that
I also wonder if balls tend to be hit harder anyway with a runner on base; one, because the pitcher theoretically loses a bit from the stretch, and two, because a runner on (over time and huge sample sizes) may presuppose intrinsically less effective pitching than that faced by batters with the bags empty.
by Diamondhacks on Aug 22, 2008 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Thanks Jim and Diamond. Interesting discussion. A ten point bump in BABIP isn’t monumental, and I’d venture to guess that one could narrow down the batters it would make a difference against. Based on a batter’s GB/FB ratio and where he hits the ball when he hits it on the ground (right side/left side), I might very selectively employ the strategy of conceding the base in late inning situations. However, it would be very selective: only against hitters who hit their fair share of balls on the ground near the 1B.

Makes sense to me
The other bit of conventional wisdom I forgot to mention is the whole thing about a pitcher dividing his concentration between hitter and baserunner. I have no idea how to measure that, but we hear it all the time and I’d be surprised if there wasnt an element of truth to it.
That said, I tend to agree with you. There probably are lopsided, late inning situations where one’s win expectancy actually rises by attending to the runner(s). Tons of variables to consider though, and I’m glad I’m not the one to sort it all out.
And thx for keeping this on a first name basis ;-)
