Random Off-Day Thread
The usual opportunity to randomly ramble about whatever you want. Topics may include, but are certainly not limited to:
- How excited you are about SnakePitFest on Saturday? Are you dressing up, 80's style?
- The ongoing Olympics. Do you think anyone will ever break Phelps' record of eight gold medals?
- Anyone see Tropic Thunder this weekend? Or any other flick?

Off Day randomness
1.) Mega-excited! I get to see the DBacks, I’ll get an Eric Byrnes Bobblehead to go with my Matt Williams Bobblehead, I get to spend time with the Kishis, I’ll have an opportunity to go to Chipotle, and it’s like a vacation! Probably not going to dress up 80s-style, tho, as we’ve discussed, my 81 year old Mom will be dressed “80s style”. Teehee.
2.) Michael Phelps is an awesome athlete and I don’t think anyone will ever break that record. Didn’t he win every race he was in? So the best somebody could do would be to tie the record?
3.) No movies for me this weekend. Choices at the theater were limited, and there were baseball games and Olympics to watch.
It's like living with a six-year old.

Nah, I’m not dressing up. I was born in the middle of the ‘80s, so I can’t pretend to know what was happening. Giant glasses and parachute pants or something.

The hell out of Mrs. SnakePit, who spent the entire movie wanting Batman to clear his throat. You’d think with all his wonderful toys, he could afford a ten buck voice-changer from Toys R Us… :-) But otherwise, it kicked butt.
We didn’t see too much over the weekend, thanks to running shows on Friday and Saturday. Did watch The Brave One, in which Jodie Foster goes all vigilante. Not bad, though with a rather dim view of the criminal justice system. Did watch a couple of eps of BBC America series Primeval, which was kinda like Stargate with dinosaurs, and a lot of fun.

The Batman voice did wear
I know a lot of people talk up Jack Nicholson’s Joker, but to me, it’s his portrayal is “Jack Nicholson playing the Joker”, whereas Ledger was just the Joker. If that distinction makes any sense. Definitely the highlight of the movie.
I was disappointed in War, too- I saw it a few months ago, about the same time I saw Chaos, both movies that left me somewhat disappointed in Jason Statham. I’m hoping The Bank Job and Death Race will be enough to redeem him in my eyes.

The Bank Job....
It was good, not great but a solid movie. Jason Statham has been one of my favs too, but he’s not Turkish in the Bank Job either. Death Race, ehhh, I don’t know.
One note on the new Joker versus the Nicholson villain. I know that because Heath Ledger did a fantastic job, people are quick to name him the best ever. While that may be true (its debateable), you can’t compare the two characters. Ledger’s version had a better script, director and the hype surrounding what the Dark Knight was going to be. It’s not fair to Jack to punish him for Tim Burton’s idea of the Joker, or that Chris Nolan gave Heath that much more to work with.

Movies
Funny you mention movies, but me and the wife decided to just rent because the excitement was lacking for this week’s new releases. I’m actually pretty pumped about the movie Traitor coming out with Don Cheadle. I’ll be seeing that in a few weeks.
We brought home Rambo, and watched people get blown up for an hour and a half. Other than that, we were busy watching the Olympics. Is it just me, or is Shawn Johnson under four feet tall? I love rooting for her, but damn she’s tiny. Thanks for coming on the show again Jim. It was a blast.

I actually watched Rambo this weekend as well. Man was that a stupid movie. Perhaps the worst movie I’ve seen this year. I think it would have been better if they would have done it with a smirk, realizing all along how stupid it was. But nope, it was played with a straight face.

I heard that
there were graphic scenes of children getting beheaded and dismembered and such.
I’m a fan of action movies and video games, but I count my lucky stars that excessively graphic violence still repulses me. For example, I still cry during the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan everytime I watch it.
My little sister, OTOH, is the polar opposite; she couldn’t care less.

The Story of Ricky, is likely up there, featuring a martial-arts battle where a fighter uses his own intestines as a weapon. Well of course
it follows in line with every Star Wars, and added kiddie CG movie fare. The only problem overall, though, was that it was paced for a TV show, because that’s what it is. I personally felt it made a better long format transistion than some of the other TV shows that made movies recently.

They
should actually be the last people you listen to. But, like I said to snakercharmer, if you’re sitting on the fence, then just wait for the rental, because it’s a kid’s CG movie through and through, and I don’t mean in the Wall*E kind of way.
There is a moment, however, that I think you would get as a fellow fan and peruser of EU, when they introduce Jabba’s “uncle,” who if you didn’t know that Hutts are hermaphradites, you’d think was extremely flaming. Unfortunately I think most people wouldn’t know this, so it is kind of an awkwardly funny moment.

Really?
They’re the ones who’ve been apologizing and offering rationalizations for every problem people have had with the prequels. Though I know LucasArts pissed off a lot of people by making people take down negative reviews. And when the positive (professional) reviews I’ve seen say things like “better than expected” and “if you’re willing to regress to the mental age of 12 for a couple of hours,” it really seems like damning with faint praise. I figure I’ll rent it eventually.
I had heard there was some background about Hutt biology- I was curious if Lucas was going to ignore EU stuff, like he had in other instances. Kind of cool to see that he didn’t, though.
Seriously, though, what’s going on if they can’t get Frank Oz on board to voice for it?

Well
Star Wars sites are going to be defensive to a point about the prequels, but this is obviously not for them as sad as that is to say. It’s a trailer for a TV show that is meant for kids, so I’m not sure why anyone is surprised.
About the voices, I’m not sure what the budgeting was, but remember that the movie was thrown together after the TV show was in production, so I imagine it was a case of they weren’t going to be able to get some of the big names for the major characters (we’ll see Yoda a lot more than Mace Windu). I have to say, though, that the voices were pretty good. Obviously not the originals for the most part, but it wasn’t bad and in many ways better than the originals. The only gripe I might have is that they made Obi-Wan sound like a complete jerk, which on one hand is an improvement for him.

Obi-Wan was kind of a jerk
That’s one of the things I never understood about the prequels. You’d think when he starts mouthing off to Qui-gon about how they’ve picked up “yet another pathetic lifeform,” that his Jedi Master might say “Have some manners, Padawan, that’s why we’ve never let you take the trials to become a full Jedi Knight.”

The shortest summation I can give you...
Is that he was the voice of Tidus in Final Fantasy X.
Nothing against the guy. He’s one of the 15 voice actors that actually get any repeated work in the States. But that left an indelible image in my mind, one that simply cannot mesh with the idea of Obi-Wan being voiced by him.

1) I’m dressing up, 80’s style- invisible. OOOOH. I’m good, I know. :-(

Goooooooood morning,
Baltimore Arizona!
1) I’m pretty excited for SnakepitFest, and I’m going to dress as an 80’s cliche, but probably pretty low key. I haven’t decided yet, though I might just go to Goodwill and grab some stuff and put together something. The Mrs., however, is going as punk, so maybe I will join her as that. I dunno yet.
2) Olympics? Eh, I just don’t have the time or ambition right now to try and follow anything. I guess this Phelps dude is pretty hardcore or something.
3) I saw both Mamma Mia and Clone Wars this weekend. Both were about the level I expected, so take that for what it’s worth. I really want to see Tropic Thunder though that might have to wait for a slower weekend, which the next two weekends certainly are not, between SnakepitFest/King’s X, and then going to Dallas for a bat mitzvah.
I’ve been researching Vintage Base Ball recently, and it’s something that really intrigues me. It’s like Civil War Reenactments, but with baseball. Apparently there are few teams around town. Intriguing, I say.

I hate that
song that they use in it, so yes. It annoys me.
Other than that, though, it could probably be pretty good. The funny thing is that Vin Diesel is actually a decent actor, he’s always just stuck doing these types of movies. Or maybe he likes them, who am I to judge?

Olympic thoughts
1. Nastia Liukin got robbed by that 9 year old Chinese girl, who won due to the tiebreaker even though she made a visibly significant error.
2. I don’t think anyone will break Michael Phelps’ new record, but the way world records routinely fall in int’l swimming competition, you never know.

1. Nasty didnt get robbed by a little Chinese girl. If anything, she was robbed by a self important bureaucracy intent on deriving false significance from imperceptible differences in performance. I guess they’ve extracted most of the political partisanship from the scores, but you have to laugh at a complex multi judge system that equates two girls down to a thousandth of a point, then imposes some even less significant “tiebreaker” to derive champ and runner up.
Awarding two golds was the right thing to do, but the gymnastics federation frets that a double gold would somehow undermine their own authority (ie "these bozos cant even determine a winner). So instead of a heartwarming and doubly earned Sino-American shared victory, the incumbent powers leave us with confusion, bitterness and a lone, mythical champion – and we all miss the greater Olympic ideal in the process.

And a little irony. . .
Nastia’s dad competed for the Soviet Union (I think it was still the USSR when he competed) and he tied for the gold with another gymnast in one of the competition. And, guess what? They gave out two golds! So kind of ironic that his daughter ends up in a similar situation, yet walks away with “only” a silver.

My reply button doesn’t work at work (imagine that), so I am responding to your post here. Actually the gymnastics federation prefer double medals to be awarded — and at world championships, ties are not broken. But at the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee’s rules apply and thus, ties must be broken. However, if 2 gold medals would have been awarded, there would have been no silver awarded for the 2nd highest score, just a bronze.

I wasnt sure
there even was an intl gymnastics “Federation” (there is!), hence my lower case “f”. I meant it more generically, as in the sport’s powers that be.
