Gameday Thread, #121: 8/14 vs. Rockies

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Definitely be very good to win this one today, and put the pressure back on to the Dodgers to win their evening game against the Phillies. Haren was more than a bit shaky in his last outing: it was probably his worst of the season, as he allowed six earned runs in 5.1 innings against Atlanta, taking the loss.
Rush has been decent, though appears only good for about six innings at the most. His last six outings have been consistent, always going between five and six innings, and allowing between one and three earned runs. However, those included two games against Pittsburgh, one against the Padres and another facing the pre-Manny Dodgers, and I'd like to think our offense will present a bit more of a challenge than those teams.
For obvious, work-related reasons, my active presence will be limited, but monitoring will be taking place to make sure we don't have any repetition of the unpleasantness that broke out at one point yesterday. I have an array of tools at my disposal, and will have no hesitation in using them. That said, let's go kick Rockies' ass, win the series, win the season series and head on to Houston, knowing we'll still be at least tied for first.

Let's go Danny Boy!
I’ve been reading AZ Snakepit for a couple of months, this is my first post. Lifelong D-Backs fan (D-Backs life, not mine….I’m older than they are).
Whatever happened to Erubiel Durazo?
Welcome!
Always good to have a rookie batting lead-off. :-) Post often!

If Haren can get through the 1st he should be OK.

Looking forward to a good game today, I think Haren’s going to give us a good outing.

And for extra incentive I have Haren on my fantasy team.

No, but I have visited Brazil. Actually I’m from Southern California, lived in AZ 7 years. Gaucho is a reference to my college alma mater (UC Santa Barbara).

Today's lineup
- S. Drew ss .281
- C. Young cf .234
- C. Jackson lf .309
- A. Dunn rf .234
- M. Reynolds 3b .248
- C. Tracy 1b .286
- C. Snyder c .245
- C. Burke 2b .196
- D. Haren p .151
Burke gets to start at second-base. I hope Reynolds is taking ground-balls… Upton 5-for-12 in three rehab games for Tucson, though the Sidewinders have been outscored 33-10 in the first two games of their series against Colorado Springs.

lol
Burke actually did something good last night, and still gets hated on!! But seriously, i wouldn’t mind seeing him in the minors! lol. THe only way I see that happening is if they do move Reynolds to 2nd base, and have Augie there as a back up for him, because basically, like today, Burke will be at 2nd probably every 3rd or 4th game at 2nd base.
Not till rosters expand in September, I think
I’d rather see him at the back of the rotation. But he’s more likely to replace Rosales there, then Burke.

AWFUL strike zones this series.

Why can't WE get guys like these?
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Should have done better
But a five-run lead with nine outs to go, and out starter still in the game…

5 runs and 96% is not enough
…with Qualls, Pena, and Lyon in the pen.

Pena

Well
I was talking about his last outing only… He pitched well. He has struggled for a bit before that!!
Lyon

haha
no worries. the actual numbers even surprised me a little bit.
by pepperdinedevil on Aug 14, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Though in his defense
Five of those runs came in the .2 innings, and he has only blown one save in seven chances. Which is really what matters.
by Jim McLennan on Aug 14, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions
True
But, the only reason I care about his number of saves is to get him type-A status in the off-season… call me a jerk. See if I care!
I just haven’t been very confident in the pen lately. I wish Cruz didn’t walk half the guys he faces. I want him to close.

what does Danny Haren’s supposed 2nd-half slump look like? Traditionally?

Yeah,
I thought it was something like that. Might not want him pitching complete games at this part of the season….

Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Though I note
His BABIP is also 52 points higher after the break, so we may simply be talking statistical flukage.

He’s at 103 pitches, so is close to being maxed out.
