Gameday Thread, #120: 8/13 vs. Rockies
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, Aug 13, 2008 9:05 PM EDT

|
Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Battle of the sucky left-handers tonight, with all the making of a Coors slugfest. Davis and Francis have combined for the following line over their past couple of starts:
17.1 IP, 34 H, 8 BB, 8 K, 22 R, 21 ER, 10.90 ERA, 0-3 record.
This is particularly ironic for Davis, who came closer to a perfect game in his final start of July, than any Diamondbacks pitcher since the Big Unit completed his in 2004. His last couple of outings, however: yuck.
Be nice if he got back in the right direction tonight, and at least in Francis, we're facing someone who has been having his share of problems. He actually got a Cy Young vote last year: this season, he has only three wins, tied for the least in the majors among pitchers with eighteen or more starts. And we have Adam Dunn with his .333/.600/.667 line for Arizona since he came to us. Tonight could well be the night he goes yard; though if not, the good news is, the Rockies ace Aaron Cook has been scratched from tomorrow's start, and we'll face Glendon Rusch instead. With Dan Haren going there for Arizona, a win tonight would seem to give us a good chance of the sweep.
We should get Doug Slaten back into the bullpen tonight, after his trip onto the DL with a knee strain. They wanted to give him one last rehab appearance in Tucson, and since he struck out the side Monday, he's deemed ready. Buckner or Rosales will likely be the losers. Justin Upton also appeared for the Sidewinders in the same game, and went 2-for-5. Still, I suspect there'll be no desperate hurry to get him back up to the parent club any more.
Couple of minor points regarding Gameday Threads. Just to clarify, off-topic chat is permitted in-thread after the game, as long as it's at the bottom. The aim is to keep the body uncluttered, for people looking for game details or info. Also, its proposed that when an overflow is opened, the previous thread will be locked for further comments by the new thread creator after 10 minutes, or less if there have been no new posts. This is to keep everyone together, so we don't end up in multiple threads, but have a chance to finish up before moving. Comments, suggestions, etc. welcome. As ever, these are more guidelines than anything, subject to moderator discretion.

Right.
So we open the old thread for comments after 10 minutes, and talk about off-topic stuff throughout.
No, no. You stay in the room and make sure ‘e doesn’t leave.
And you’ll come and get him.
Right.
We don’t need to do anything apart from just stop him from entering the room.
No, no. Leaving the room.
Right.
Did the first Gameday Thread fall over into a swamp?
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Well,
too many of ours posts lately are about huge…........ tracts of logic.

Dodging Cook is fortuitous.
If only we could have managed to see Livan Hernandez in this series. Although I have this nagging feeling he would have pitched some kind of 9 IP, 11 H, 5 BB, 2 ER type of game against us.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
I always wondered
Somewhere, in the halls of Unnecessary Baseball Statistics, there has to be someone who’s broken down the win-loss records of pitchers depending on if their first pitch was a ball or a strike, or if the lead-off batter reached in the first inning. I was kind of curious what that would look like.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Young and Drew down quickly to start
Start getting the hits, guys…
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Or not
Offense goes down 1-2-3.
Well, let’s see which Doug Davis is going to show up today.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
1 2 3 Inning
I still don’t think Young is suitable for the 2 hole. I have no idea why Melvin constantly rotates him between the 1, 2, 6, and 7 spots in the order, when he projects more as a 4 or 5 hitter. Even with his improved walk rate, a sub-.300 OBP shouldn’t be batting that high in the order.
Amen

Granted,
if you run the count to 3-0, you can’t REALLY complain.

Come on, Doug. Get it going.

And a bunt single
Two on, no outs for the Rockies.
Triple play?

::shoots the Terminator::
Come with me if you want to live.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Two things
1. This umpire is very inconsistent, already after 1 inning.
2. If Doug Davis struggles in the 2nd inning, i would like to see a short leash on him… We can’t do what we did last start. Wasn’t that when we came back, but we were in too much of a whole because Davis was left in TOO long?
True
That’s why I miss Edgar Gonzalez/Yusmeiro Petit out of long relief. They could come in the game in the 3rd inning and throw 5 one-run innings.
Well
we are skipping Petit’s spot in the rotation aren’t we? he could be available tonight, if that is still true
True
I wonder if they might have him warm up in the pen.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
If Davis continues to struggle
I really hope so. We can’t keep having Davis out there hoping he will get through, when he puts us in more of a jam. Pick it up Davis.
Stupid ESPN says that Webb is pitching both Fri. and Sat. against Houston and doesn’t show Petit scheduled to pitch at all in the next 5 games, so who knows.
Old skool!!
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
He's putting me to sleep
Those Olympics are looking better and better to watch tonight. This game has the makings of some major suckage from DD.
I get single game tickets
prior to the season, so I am the mercy of the schedule. So far I’ve seen Haren 5 times, and Webb, EdGon, Johnson and Scherzer once each. No Davis for me this year so far.
Thank you, Tulo
Okay, now let’s go out there and score some runs.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Huh? Why would his age relate to his size? It’s not like he’s huge and only 12. He’s a grown man. Would you expect him to be larger at, say, age 36 than he is now?

I’m not sure there has EVER been a “non-solid” hit to foulpole.

Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Could be.
I also wonder if maybe there’s something physical lingering from that game. Melvin left him in there waaay too long, and it showed.
Maybe
But this is his 3rd outing since… That may be the case for the outing after, MAYBE the 2nd one, not sure about the third
Maybe the stress or something
from the cancer diagnosis (not the cancer itself) is catching up to him. Grasping at straws here.
Maybe
he’s having metabolic issues due to his lack of a thyroid gland.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Chris Young
...... I seriously can’t explain him… Doubles machine for a few games, strikeout machine for a few weeks, without touch a base via walk or hit or anything…
Maybe during the offseason
we can trade Doug Davis to the Reds for Micah Owings.
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
I guess we made too much of...
Owings having to give up his jersey number.. guess he REALLY didn’t have a choice, huh?

Yeah, seriously.....
seems a little stupid to be calling Dunn an “asshole” for lining out.

And it would have been a line drive double
or at least a single if not for the shift. Dunn has no control over that. I’m not sure what else you want from him but to swing at a strike and put a line drive into play.

Better to ground out weakly on the fifth pitch
than hit a frozen rope on the first.
Such is the life of Adam Dunn and his detractors.
No. Remember foulpole's reasoning?

I may not have administrative powers
But I can hit you with weapons-grade sarcasm if necessary.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
Nice baserunning
and a lovely hit.

Didn’t we call for a Adam Dunn grand slam yesterday? Now would be great…

Schulte just made an Dunn punn
it doesn’t read too well on the radio though, so he had to spell it out.

All wrong!

I guess we shouldn’t try mid-inning script revisions anymore.

It was good fun though.

And I was talking about the first pitch swinging.

The bummer about baseball
is that even the best hitters fail more often than they succeed. Ahhh! Why doesn’t baseball love me the way that I love her?

Probably Rauch.
Given the timing of what happened. If this were a home game, there would have been a bigger fluctuation in Win Expectancy (AKA Young and Dunn could have won the game right there, instead of having the Rockies bat in the bottom half). But I guess we’ll see.
If you think about it..
Manny grounded into a DP in the 9th inning against us… Then has been on an absolute terror… Can we expect the same?? lol
Davis is the guy givin up all the runs.
That formula that you use will probably say Rauch, but I would say blew the game.
