Here come...
some strike outs. Adam “Big Donkey” Dunn does have good power numbers but he also has 120 strike outs to go with that .233 average. At least he only hits into 4 double plays this year. I don’t know what to think yet until I hear Mark Grace tell me how much I’m going to love this deal.
Where have you gone Mike Fetters?
Yeah, he's like
a better version of Mark Reynolds or Chris Young(2007 edition).

that will be a free agent after this season. We lose two unknown prospects and another pitching prospect? This has Moorad written all over it!

I see
that Dunn isn’t represented by Scott Boras. Does that mean he’s likely to accept arbitration? And don’t we need to offer him arbitration in order to get the picks?

Not so sure about it being J.Mo's doing.
Besides, I think it’s a good deal for us. No chance of signing Dunn, though, because of that brilliant Eric Byrnes deal, so we’re probably going to be in line for some draft picks, which I like.

The price was nice
It doesn’t look like we gave up any of our best prospects. And we’ll get similar prospects back if he leaves.

That's what I'm saying.
Although—I’m a little surprised that Dunn made it past the Dodgers on the waiver wire. I would have expected them to block this as long as possible.

In fact,

I would have expected
them to claim him so they could fulfill their dream of fielding a team made entirely of ourfielders and first basemen,

Well, just because they claim him

But at least he walks!
Dunn is second only to Pat Burrell in the NL for walks (80).... so at least he has a number of walks and home runs to balance out the strike outs.
FYI, we now have three of the top 5 striker outers on our team! CY, Dunn, and Reynolds. I’m sure Upton would be up there with them if he was healthy!

Arizona claimed the Reds left fielder on waivers but no deal was consummated before the 48-hour window expired Monday, according to major-league sources.
Dunn, who is tied for the major-league lead in home runs, will now remain with the Reds for the rest of the season.
The Diamondbacks also had interest in Dunn before the July 31 trade deadline.
Currently in first place in the NL West, the Diamondbacks were looking to boost an offense than ranks 10th in the National League in runs scored, 12th in home runs and 13th in batting average.
Dunn is hitting .233 with 32 home runs and 74 RBIs for the Reds this season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks added a big bat Monday in their attempt to hold off the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West race.
Adam Dunn
Dunn
Arizona acquired Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, who is tied for the major league lead with 32 home runs, for three prospects.
The trade was first reported by KTAR Radio in Phoenix.
In exchange for Dunn, Cincinnati will receive minor league pitcher Dallas Burk and two other players to be named later.
Buck got a call from D-backs farm director A.J. Hinch, telling him he had been traded for Dunn. Buck, who was traveling with the Single-A Visalia Oaks, was already on the bus to San Jose, Calif., when Hinch called him. He had to tell teammates of the trade en route.
“It was kind of funny,” Buck said, “because I was rumored to be in a deal for [Mark] Teixeira, so when I just told them they all thought I was messing with them.”
Buck was drafted by Arizona in the third round of the 2005 draft. Once a top-notch prospect, Buck’s draft status fell after had an elbow injury revealed on the eve of the ‘05 draft that bumped him out of a likely first-round slot. He had Tommy John surgery last summer and had begun pitching in Single-A this summer.
Dunn is tied with the Phillies’ Ryan Howard for the NL lead with his 32 homers. The White Sox’s Carlos Quentin also has 32 home runs.

This is on ESPN.com as well ...
So I have two questions …
1) How good are the guys we gave up?
2) How are we going to get him playing time? Sit down Romero? Not bring up Upton when he is healthy? Move CoJack back to first?
Also, looks like Salazar’s short stint post O-Dog injury 2.0
Oh, a third question. Can one of you experts explain how this works after the “trade deadline”

We aren’t locked into him—so the salary for this year doesn’t bother me that much. I just don’t know how Melvin is gonna make this work.
I see a bunch of possibilities.
Chris young could get a break and Romero could move to center. Then Dunn would play right field.
or
Conor Jackson could move to first, Chad Tracy could move to third, Mark Reynolds could move to Second and Adam Dunn could play left field.
or
Every player could move one postion to the right (which would be close to the last thing I just wrote).
"We...probed them all the way through. They're completely meat." — Terry Bisson
Your second possiblity
was what I was thinking. Or move Tracy to right. Augie did come through for us last year though.

Move Reynolds
to 2B! He played there at UVa!!
Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers: Filling the dubious shoes left open by Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Let's play lineup construction
I would presume that Dunn plays RF until Upton comes back? What happens then…
Like folks are saying up above … might be time to test ol’ Reynolds at second base.
Does anyone else get night terrors thinking about that? One amazing play only 5% of players could make followed by a routine grounder that gets flubbed … scary.
Yeah, but...
Considering that Chris Burke is likely to get a decent amount of starts at second (like whenever Augie’s not playing), is there really any escaping some form of nightmare?
It could be interesting
But I think playing at second could actually reduce his errors (once he gets a few games to adjust). He’ll have a little more time to see the ball and first base will be a lot closer. It may lead to fewer bobbles and fewer errant throws to first.
"We...probed them all the way through. They're completely meat." — Terry Bisson
But how is his range to his right?
He’s shown to have decent range but the range a second baseman needs in both directions is more than I’ve seen from him at third…
by snakecharmer on Aug 11, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions
He's made
a lot fewer lousy throws, it seems, as time has gone on. And a bobble made by a 2B is much less costly than made by a 3B. Generally speaking.

The only "night terror"
is that Orlando Hudson is done for the year, so we don’t have a choice. We’re picking between lesser evils here.

“My team which was one out away from the world series gave up on the season before the allstar break … at least your guys are making moves.”
True … true …
Wow
Just saw the news. I can’t believe it. It’s a fascinating move. Dunn’s weaknesses unfortunately seem to be the same weaknesses we have on the team, but at least he gets on base. I definitely hope this means the end to TC and Burke on the field. We should be able to mix and match at the CI and OF spots b/w Reynolds-Tracy-CoJack-Dunn-CY-Upton-Romero with 5 of the 7 playing every night. CY certainly needs to see some time off. It will mean every night we have two formidable hitters on the bench. Can’t remember the last time we said that. And if we move Reynolds to 2B (pleeeeease!!!) it makes us even stronger. With Tracy at 3B, Reynolds at 2B, Dunn at 1B and an OF of CoJack-CY/Romero-Upton… Phew! That’s a lot of pop (well, at least compared to what we’ve had). Unfortunately it’s also a pretty awful defensive IF.

Dunn is streaky and normally doesn't do well in August
But my personal theory is that trading Griffey really shook him up. The two of them were close friends and were the longest tenured Reds. Now that he’s in a new clubhouse, I think he’ll start to hit better.
I’m really unfamiliar with the D-Backs’ lineup. Where do you think he would bat?

Unless the players to be named are decent, then this trade for the Reds is terrible. I’d rather have the supplemental picks for letting him walk at the end of the year if the Reds didn’t want him.
Anyways, hope you guys beat the Rays in the World Series!
I'm cuatiously optimistic about this move
Obviously, we’ll have to see what we give up later. But I won’t be unhappy to see what the offense could do with Dunn, Reynolds, Tracy, and CoJack in the lineup.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?

Well,
