Random Off-day Thread
Mrs. SnakePit had a dream last night, where we went to a baseball game with Mark Grace. Except, he was totally drunk and bad-mouthing everyone. We went off to get concessions, and when we came back he was completely surrounded by the media, and we realized that he had dirt on just about everyone at the club. Weird. Have you ever dreamed about the Diamondbacks in general, or a specific player? And let's try to keep this one above the waistline, shall we? :-)
Possible other topics for discussion:
Sports you'd like to see in the Olympics
The late Isaac Hayes
The Dodgers: 4-5 since getting Manny
But, as usual, it's a free-fire zone for an off-day.

I have to do laundry...
I could try to shrink it for you?
Not sure that would help at all…I have to try to shrink mine, because even though I’m not quite drowning in it, it’s pretty big. I tried to go to the exchange thingy during the game to get smaller sizes, but all they had left were XXLs…Yeah, no thanks.

Olympics?
I’m gutted that baseball has been dropped from the 2012 program; being able to see top-class players in the city where I live would have been amazing. But apparently the IOC decided to drop baseball and softball because they don’t have enough worldwide appeal (and no, there’s no cricket either).
by britdback on Aug 11, 2008 2:23 PM EDT 0 recs
I was wondering if the issue of venues might have been an influencing factor, too. I mean, I doubt there’s many baseball fields around London that’d be suitable for the Olympics.

I’ve been keeping my reading baseball-light lately- I save those books for the off-season, when I don’t have games to watch. My recent books have included Donald Westlake, John Scalzi, Soon I Will Be Invincible, and some books on the middle ages for a RPG I’m going to run soon.

Best of Everything
caught my eye because it referenced one of my favorite reads, the Valley of the Dolls. Post-war America, and especially New York are two of my favorite things to read about, and my next novels lined up are BUtterfield 8 and Manhattan Transfer. Also, I don’t know why, but I love spunky post-college career women novels, so Best of Everything really fit a lot of my criteria.

Oh, and to answer the question:
I’ve had dreams about a Diamondbacks player before. Only they were of an ex-player. And an ex-basketball star. And rubbing. And it was a nightmare.

Wow
Someone was talking about The Dark Knight on another board I read, and said “Dark Knight felt bloated and too long in comparison, half an hour shorter and it would have been perfect. Less Joker and more Harvey Dent/Two Face.”
Yeah, I totally disagree with that.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?
by kishi on Aug 11, 2008 9:01 PM EDT 0 recs
Seemed like a fair balance to me.
Joker’s always been the primary Batman villain, and Dent seemed to have plenty of screentime. I mean, maybe a little bit more of Two-Face, but it wouldn’t have fit with the motives they gave him (essentially, exacting revenge on a handful of people before planning to kill himself). And the length seemed fine as well.

I almost didn’t realize until the end just how long the movie had been. It wasn’t until I sat and thought back about how much had gone on in between the beginning and the end that it really hit me.
Really, the thing I thought could have been trimmed was the business with Lao. But I know that was important for Dent’s storyline.

It's interesting, too.
It’s a testament to how the movie absorbs your attention, because in a way it’s a two-and-a-half-hour marathon of downtrodden scenes. No happy endings, rare victories for the “good guys,” who keep changing anyway…with a poorly put together script and bad actors, people would walk out of the theater after 45 minutes.

The length
didn’t bother me, but I can’t disagree with it being bloated. I personally felt they should have
HUGE SPOILERS DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU
NO SERIOUSLY, SPOILERS
focused more on the Joker and his activities. I wanted it to be darker, and end on a truly dark note, such as the Joker being successful in blowing up at least one of those tankers. The focus of the movie should have been on the Joker all the way to the end, with the ending being Batman and Commissioner Gordan realizing that there was something else out there, setting up a third movie with Two-Face going on a rampage in an attempt to clean up the corruption. They didn’t need to have that little bit at the end with the face-off, as it derails the momentum. The end of TDK should have been ramping up for a showdown and ultimate victory (if even temporarily) for Batman and Gotham in the third movie. Now we’re left wondering who the villain is and whether they will live up to the amazing performances of the Joker and Harvey Dent.

I liked the farries part
except that neither blew up. Maybe that’s too dark, but I felt the movie needed to end with a bang to propel it to the third and final chapter of this arc, not Batman running from the cops.

That too
it was something that was pretty darn good, but just needed to be leaner. Let’s all be honest here. Batman is not a very interesting character, it’s his Rogue’s Gallery that’s interesting as they project onto him underlying themes. So yeah, it should have and was mostly the Joker’s film.
