Gameday Thread, #118: 8/10 vs. Braves
Atlanta Braves @ Arizona Diamondbacks

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
"Help me, Obi-Webb Kenobi; you're my only hope"
Say it with me. Then cross your fingers and hope that Brandon Webb can do what no-one on the pitching staff has managed to do to Atlanta yet in this series: beat them. You have to say, if we can't beat Hampton - with three major-league games since 2005 - then you might as well hand over the NL West to the Dodgers, despite their continual and endearing efforts to defer to us. It's like watching two obese gentlemen argue about who gets to go through a revolving door first.
With the smacking received by Haren yesterday, Webb now up to equal-fourth in the NL for ERA, at 2.93, trailing only Lincecum, Peavy and Santana. A complete game of one-run ball, like his last outing, would move him ahead of Santana. Six quality and unbeaten starts in a row for Webb, with his ERA at 1.60 over that time and a K:BB ratio of 34:8. His last defeat was all the way back on June 22. However, his previous outing against Atlanta was not his best, as he lasted only 4.1 innings, allowing ten hits and three walks.
The words "must-win game" are bandied about so much they have become a sports commentary cliché. However, this one certainly falls into the category of ones we really, really, really would like very much to win. With Hudson out for what could well be the rest of the season, the team needs to step up and show they won't fold like a house of cards. We're still in first, and will stay there as long as we keep winning. Though the Dodgers losing wouldn't hurt. :-)

Nah
He doesn’t show up until either Arizona is losing or the other team are winning. Of course, now that any mention by him of the other team will be ruthlessly excised, we might see less of him.

Orlando.........if there is a bright spot
Have you guys thought thought of the possibility that because hes now out for the season that its gonna be harder for him to ask for a big contract from another team. We might have a better chance of signing him because of this unfortuante accident.

Did kinda wonder about this.
Though I still have to wonder whether we should give him a long-term contract. He’ll be 31, and odds are, we’ll be paying for his declining years – even though his OPS+ has gone up every season for the past three.

Hudson's Range Factor
2005 – .991 (Age 27)

2008 – .982 (Age 30)

But just for comparison
League average Range Factors for the same years
2005 – .983
2006 – .984
2007 – .982
2008 – .981
So Hudson has declined from being well above average to, basically, being at league average. The odds are, that’ll decline further as he continues to age.

Another possibility.
I was giving some thought as to what held up the Webb signing. He might have wanted insurance of a quality defense behind him, namely o dog since drew is signed for a while. I know hes 31, but id give him money just for helping our pitching staff while batting around 300 with a 330 plus ops.

If I had the choice...
Of playing for a team that puts out a quality team year in and year out, that makes me look better I’d love to play for a team like that. Not to say the Diamondbacks don’t put out a quality product, but Webb certainly wouldn’t want a Burke behind him for several years. I just don’t think trade clauses held up the contract, and Webb already knows the Diamondbacks don’t increase a players salary due to performance.

I think the Hudson injury...
I was thinking earlier, as terrible as it is to lose O-dawg, I really think we’ll be okay. Augie played very well defensively last year in September, and his offensive numbers weren’t that bad either. I think he’ll do an adequate job at 2B, plus, I think the injury is going to spur the rest of the team to push a little harder and step it up more.

augie definitely has a place on his team but it is more to the effect of someone in the past that we had, someone like a quentin mccracken albeit he was an outfielder. he gives our team a boost but there is no way he can be our starter next year. when he does get to balls they usually are outs but just his poor little size and stature alone limit his ability to get to balls. i love his walks tho cause of his tiniest strike zone.

Actually
2008 Range Factor per 9 IP:
Augie Ojeda: 5.89
Orlando Hudson: 4.82
The league average is 4.82, so Hudson is, again, right at average. Ojeda’s career figure at 2B is 5.16, so defensive, he’d actually probably be an upgrade. Offensively, however, his career OPS+ is 66, while Hudson’s is 99. If we extend Hudson, it’d be for his bat, not his glove.

However
I have found Shaun of the Dead on the Comedy Channel so that’ll do, even in its cut form, while I do the recap.

Jeff Kent went 0 for 4 today before getting pulled in a double switch. Yeah, he’s definitely hitting a lot better with Manny behind him in the lineup.
Am I avoiding the subject, or am I doing philosophy?

“M. Ramirez struck out, reached on passed ball, H. Kuo to second on passed ball”
Didn’t we learn last week that if there’s a runner on first, a strike out is a strike out, even on a passed ball or a wild pitch?

Not with two outs
The rule is to stop the catcher from deliberately dropping a third strike, in order to get a double-play. With two outs, that obviously isn’t the case, so a dropped third strike still needs to be thrown out, even with a runner on first.

Yeah
That confused me too. Looks like Gameday skipped entirely over Vizquel’s PH, but he is now listed as 0-for-1.

Torre seems to be taking a book from Melvin’s book. Once your pitcher has got the bases loaded with one out, I’m not sure why you’d leave him out to pitch.

Should clarify
Ball went to Kuo, went through Kuo, and then the second baseman bobbled and the run scored!
