New Blog: UW Dawg Pound launches! Bar-right-arrows

Random Off-day Thread

No game for Arizona today, so here's the usual blank slate upon which you can write whatever you want, baseball-related or not. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The CC Sabathia trade to the Brewers
  • What I did over the holiday weekend
  • If we trade, what one position do we need to shore up?
  • The amazing men's final at Wimbledon

We have the day off, but the plot is to clear the decks and make some decisions on the films sent in for our film festival. That should be fun...we hope!

Evening all..

What I did over the Holiday weekend? what holiday weekend?! :(

Hmmm if only we’d won the war, would we get this weekend off instead? Non-Independence Day! ;)

The Sabathia trade seems like a great deal for the Brewers I’m just shocked that the Indians didn’t get more for it, I think that this deal, along with the Santana deal is showing just how reluctant teams are to part with top prospects these days.

Trades? I’m going home in 20 minutes so I don’t have long enough to ramble. In short, Outfield, Outfield, Outfield and maybe a bullpen arm to replace Ed-Gon/Cruz

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Jul 7, 2008 2:02 PM EDT   0 recs

Being British

There was some debate in the office as to whether I should get Independence Day off. At least, until I pointed out that without us, there wouldn’t be an Independence Day, since you have to have something to declare independence from...

Part of the reason the Indians got so little, is that Sabathia is going to be a free agent at the end of this season, so the only thing the Brewers are guaranteed to get is about fifteen more starts. It’s an even more concentrated form of the reason why the Twins got less for Santana, than the A’s did for Haren.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 7, 2008 2:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's almost a Matt LaPorta

Sabathia trade straight up. As the TBN players are never really studs in the making.

True

But the Indians lost out on 2 Draft picks so was there any real point in getting rid of him now? I suppose you save a bit on salary perhaps.

We get far 2 few Bank Holidays here, I think we have the fewest in Europe though there isa growing clamour to get St George’s Day recognised as a public Holiday. I find the war of independence fascisnating as well as American History in general. I did more modules on US History then I did British history going through uni as its just alot more interesting in my opinion.

I have always wondered what would have happened had the British won the war, I’d imagine that another war would have broken out or we’d have to deal with other European powers claiming territory, perhaps the land rush in Africa would have happened to the rest of the States but who knows… If only I had a what if machine ;)

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Jul 7, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's what is respectable about GB

everyone else in Europe takes 11 months of vacation a year. You all support yourselves instead of relying upon the rest of the world to support your vacationing hobbies.

Count yourself lucky

I think I get only six days off a year: Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, Fourth July, Labor Day and Memorial Day [I may be mixing up a couple somewhere on the list?]. From what I can see, it’s eight in England and nine in Scotland. According to Wikipedia, part of the reason why they get more in Europe is, if a holiday falls on a weekend, it’s just “lost”, not moved to the following Monday, as in the UK.

LOL@soco. It's like Fight Club for one day only.

Boxing Day is on Dec. 26th, and it takes place in Britain, and I believe in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, too. It’s a day where everyone gives gifts to the domestic workers who help make society run—postmen, doormen, maids, etc.

As usual, I’m too lazy to do the research. Correct me if I’m wrong, Wimb> Jim? Hannah?

You normally don’t get President’s Day off unless you work, at a bank, a school, or a government building, and sometimes not even then.

I kind of miss working for a bank, because you actually got the traditional holidays off.

And no one here celebrates Boxing Day. When I was in high school, people actually believed me when I told them it celebrated pugilism. In a typical display of skepticism, no one believed me the next year when I actually told them what it was named for.

Gooooood morning.

Holiday weekend?
Wasn’t much of a holiday. I cleaned. :-\

Wimbledon!
Holy crap, that was an amazing final. I love tennis- used to play a lot- and that was probably the best match I’ve ever seen. Nadal definitely deserved it. Shocker of the day? I made sure I was awake at 6:30 to watch the entire thing. 6:30! I don’t think I’ve been up at 6:30 since, um, December, when I had a class that started at 6:55…

Two days later, Eric Byrnes missed three games for excessive crying, and started listening to emo. At the same time, Emily changed her name to emilylovesthedbacksexceptthatloserericbyrnes.

by emilylovesthedbacks on Jul 7, 2008 2:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Man, was I upset about that.

We get fleeting reception on the antenna at my family’s place here in the mountains, and we couldn’t get the Federer-Nadal match through at all. No picture, no audio, no nothing. And then it turns into an instant classic, maybe the best ever. Very frustrating.

On Federer’s surface, to break Federer’s streak, in the last place the Swiss had refuge against the charging Spaniard (2-0 against Nadal on grass before yesterday)...he overcame it all.

by Azreous on Jul 7, 2008 2:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that is really sad...

I had a non-holiday since I worked all weekend, but was disppointed that ,ost of my family was at Chase on the Fourth. My mother, kind soul that she is, called me from the game.

“Wow, they suck.”
“I know.”
“Qualls sucks.”
“I know.”
“Your guy sucks.”

Now, I’m not sure who she meant by “my guy” but that’s either Dan Haren or Conor Jackson. In which case, I know you’re my mother but you take that back! You take that back right now!

I want to be in Haren's harem.

Is saying “No, you suck!” in reply to your mother going too far (or too petulant)? I mean, we’re like two months removed from Mother’s Day.

by Azreous on Jul 7, 2008 2:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably too far

I think a better answer would be a muttered “Your guy sucks.” Which, among my friends, would provoke a “Your mom’s guy sucks!” And then she could just answer, “Yeah, that’s what I said.”

Though that wouldn’t necessarily work well, since I don’t think luckycc’s mom hangs out with me or my friends a lot.

Probably too far

Always stay on your Mom’s good side, in case you need to ask her for money. That’s my advice.

I would probably go for a sarcastic, “Oh, really? I hadn’t noticed.”, instead of saying something like, “No sh**, Sherlock!”, which always gets me in trouble, no matter the situation.

Sabathia Deal...

I think it is a pretty fair deal for both sides. The Brewers look very good right now and I think could give the Cubs a run for their money. Heck, I think now the Brewers will win that division (pending the Cubs don’t make any huge deal, already rumors that they are inquiring about Harden who when healthy is a better pitcher then C.C.). The Brewers are 13th in pitchers K’s in the N.L. and needed a guy like C.C. who has had 123 K’s this year in 122 IP, while Sheets is a good pitcher he is no longer the strike out pitcher he used to be.

As far as the Indians go they get a great prospect in Matthew LaPorta and another pitching prospect that is still very young but has done well in his few innings of work. Rob Bryson is who I am talking about, the 20 year old has pitched 109 innings and has a K/BB of 143/ 32, albeit he has allowed quite a bit of hits with 92 but to counter with another positive has only allowed 5 HR’s. His ERA went up from 2007 (07 he was at a 2.67, this year he is at a 4.25 despite having improved most of his periphs, this could probably blamed on bad defense behind him?). The other guy Cleavland got is crap.

Good move for both teams, also don’t forget the draft picks the brew crew are going to get when C.C. is released.

I think the Sabathia deal was good for both sides

The Indians weren’t going to be able to sign him at the end of the year anyway. I am not sure the Brewers will either. The Indians shouldn’t be as bad as they are. This is a team many thought would play in October.

As far as our teams needs. I think LF is our main issue and I don’t mean until Byrnes gets healthy. We need a stud LF who can hit with Power and decent average.

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jul 7, 2008 4:02 PM EDT   0 recs

I dunno

I think Conor’s gotten better every outing. His RZR is up to .840.

Also… high OBP and slick fielding LFers don’t really grow on trees. Matt Holliday… Johnny Damon (injured)... Jason Bay…

Personally

I would rather see us get another LF and send Conor back to 1st. I would accept a trade for another 1B and leave Conor in LF. We need another consistent bat.

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jul 7, 2008 5:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

But then

What would we do with Tracy? Bench? Despite my comments a week ago, he’s been on a decent tear and has his OPS vs RHP up to .802.

by hotclaws on Jul 7, 2008 4:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Trade problem

I was thinking about this and I dont really like the situation we are in.
C- Snyder we are good. He calls a good game so his bat is not an issue.
1- Jackson we are good
2- O-dog, is a stud
SS- Drew. Is he the long term answer? I think he could be so we need to play him and let him develop.
3- Reynolds/Chad – I think we have our trade bait here if needed, take your pick, but its not like we need a new 3rd baseman. I like the idea of keeping both for a bat off the bench
RF- Upton, we need to let him play to develop
CF-Young. I am not sold on Young. I would be willing to let him go along with one of the 3b if we could in return get a good on base guy with speed.
LF – We need help if Byrnes is not coming back. I don’t like Jackson playing out here every day
SP- We are solid. Sure our 4-5 guys are iffy, but whose aren’t.
RP – Which Qualls will we get the 2nd half is the question here. You could always use another arm.

So here is the problem for me. I think we have good potential in almost every position and need to let it develop. But what if it doesn’t. I hate to give up on someone like Young so soon, but I really am not sold on him after this year. I don’t think he will ever hit above .260. So I feel like we need to make some changes, but I just don’t see to make the change.

by SunDevilsDen on Jul 7, 2008 4:22 PM EDT   0 recs

A quick stat

Just to lob into the mix. sOPS+, which compares the OPS we’ve got from a position, to the average OPS from that position. It doesn’t take into account defense, and lumps all players at a position together, but as a quick and dirty measure of what position we have holes at, it’s quite enlightening:

P – 137
C – 101
1B – 114
2B – 119
3B – 108
SS – 112
So far so good, eh? But what does this sign say? “Danger: Extreme Drop”?
LF – 60
CF – 94
RF – 95
PH – 91

It’s pretty clear what the problem is; we need to get production out of left-field. Moving Jackson to the position will likely help, but what will the cost be at 1B, especially with Tracy against lefties? The alternative there keeps Jackson at 1B, but then you’re left with Romero, Burke or Bonifacio in LF, and I have no faith in their output at all.

by Jim McLennan on Jul 7, 2008 4:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Trade

Why dont we try to pick up a good veteran OF’er… maybe someone like Trot Nixon? OK Im bitter, Im a huge nixon fan, i even have his RedSox jersey and a signed world series ball from ‘04 so i was lookinf forward to when he got called up

Trot Nixon since joining the Mets this year:
.171/.293/.286

Fire Bob Melvin. Free Jamie D'Antona. Eric Byrnes Sucks.

by nihil67 on Jul 7, 2008 5:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Same Data, Different Look

Not arguing that LF isnt the biggest problem, of course, but here’s an OPS sort of Diamondbacks starters by their positional ranking amongst 30 MLB clubs (sorted by 200 PA min.)

Snyder 7th
CoJack 9th
Hudson 6th
Reynolds 8th
Drew 10th
... ... ...
Byrnes 26th
Young 21st
Upton 18th

PH – 20th

When one drops each of these “rankings” three or four spots (to offset park advantages), a clearer picture emerges:

1. All starting Diamondback infielders are near average to above average offensively – but none are truly difference-making standouts.
2. Diamondback outfielders, generally, are way below average for their positions – as are the pinch hitters, to date.

Practically speaking, I’m not suggesting moving Upton or Young – I just felt the 94 &95 for Chris and Justin might draw inferences that they’ve been a smidge below positional average when they’ve really been quite a bit below. Byrnes and his pre-CoJack replacements, of course, we already know about

by Diamondhacks on Jul 7, 2008 9:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A dilemma

The SnakePit sponorship of Yusmeiro Petit’s page at Baseball-Reference.com is coming up, but do we stick with him, since he doesn’t seem to have a spot on the roster? The alternatives which are available are Chris Burke, Jeff Salazar [ok…], Alex Romero, Emilio Bonifacio [cheap, at $5], Randy Johnson [if you’ve got $200 to spare] and Connor Robertson.

And I don’t know who this Prowant company is, but they seem to be trying to corner the market in Arizona players, eh, TAP? :-)

by Jim McLennan on Jul 7, 2008 4:26 PM EDT   0 recs

I would say

stick with Petit – I think the guy is going to be a rotation mainstay for a few years. His minor league numbers are way too good not to be a major league regular eventually.

Wikipedia is your friend
The degree to which a profanity is offensive relies upon how the use of the word affects an individual. Some will consider the original meaning of a word (for example, the sexual act) to be offensive or a subject not fit for polite conversation…while others will have no objection to these subject matters. Some will feel that certain words, having an established social taboo are simply offensive, regardless of any context; others will find profanities offensive mainly when used in a way deliberately intended to offend. Furthermore, some may be in the habit of using profanity in order to seem cool. Thus, insults can even be used as terms of endearment.

McCain should consider him. If he takes Brandon Webb, everyone would be under the impression, with headlines like “McCain chooses Webb as running mate”, that Jim Webb stopped endorsing Obama and jumped ship for (back to) the GOP. McCain would earn points for crossing the aisle.

Some random thoughts while driving on the freeway today

1) What the hell is wrong with Arizona drivers? Now, I’m not going to pull the “California Driver” card, equating sucidal manuvers with safety and vehicular ability, but there’s one thing I’ve noticed more and more in Phoenix is that most people don’t seem to have the ability to pass. Sometimes, the average speed for the highway is higher than the posted signs, by significant numbers. The far left lane, however is generally reserved for those that want to go a slightly safer speed. Why do people insist on riding your ass when there are two wide open lanes to the left to pass me on? You might say, ‘oh, that because they need the next exit’ but no, they generally don’t.
