Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Gameday Thread, #88: 7/5 vs. Padres

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, Jul 5, 2008 8:10 PM EDT

sdg_medium

Jake Peavy
RHP, 5-5, 2.90

Ari_medium

Doug Davis
3-3, 3.79

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Ugh. Yeah, I know Peavy was injured and missed a month, but he has allowed seven runs in 22 innings since he came back, so it's clear that whatever ailed him isn't a problem at the moment. However, in his last four starts, Doug Davis has allowed seven runs in 25.2 innings, so this one could be a lot closer than you'd have thought at the start of the season. Though if an unknown like Baek can no-hit Arizona until the sixth inning, we might see a perfect game from Peavy tonight. After last night's disappointment, I'm expecting nothing.

It's Native American Appreciation Night at the park, and Gila River Casino are giving out blankets to the first 25,000 in attendance. Yes. In Arizona. In July. I have to think this is some kind of cunning plan to inflict retribution on us palefaces, for when we gave the native Americans blankets. I am therefore staying away, and will be giving anyone at the game a wide berth for a couple of weeks, just in case. :-) It's one of those awkward 5:10 pm starts, so I'm not sure how much I'll be around - it largely depends on our dinner plans.

Webb gets the start for the ASG

Report: Webb to start All-Star Game

Webb
The New York Post has learned that Brandon Webb will start the All-Star Game for the NL.
Voted in as starters were C Geovany Soto, 1B Lance Berkman, 2B Chase Utley, 3B Chipper Jones, SS Hanley Ramirez, OF Alfonso Soriano, OF Kosuke Fukudome and OF Ken Griffey Jr. Webb is something of a surprising choice to start given his recent struggles, but he’s still as deserving of the honor as anyone. Also likely considered were Edinson Volquez, Ben Sheets and Tim Lincecum. Jul. 5 – 6:03 pm et

I believe I read somehwere (today’s paper maybe) that Owings could start Tues. or Wed., and that if he starts Tues. everyone else would get an extra day’s rest. However, should Owings start Wed., then Webb may start Tues. and then again on July 13, thereby he probably wouldn’t pitch in the All-Star Game should he be selected.

Cause he wanted to be able to explain something cool to me and not have me go, “Huh?”

I got him to at least read Harry Potter, so by the end I could be like, “WHAT?!” And vent at him.

This Who thing is killing me! Last week I had a friend who is as obsessed at my side and now I am all by myself and no one has seen it. I have explained it to soco but he kind of looks at me like I have 2 heads.

Ice Road Truckers on THC

doesn’t offend me nearly as much as MonsterQuest. That show is complete and utter garbage and its presence on the network is rapidly destroying whatever credibility it still has.

And as bad as those shows are, they’re still better than the god-awful “lost prophecy of Nostradamus” specials that they run out seemingly every year.

But the shows focus on his "prophecy"

which is garbage.

I would describe the latest show, but Variety does it best:

All right, let’s take it as a given that the History Channel wants to shed its stodgy old image, but even so, it’s hard to justify overblown nonsense like this thumbsucker, devoting two hours to a book of dubious provenance that might be linked to the 16th century alleged prophet. Filled with extremely earnest “experts” of peculiar pedigree (including a psychic and the Nostradamus Society of America’s president), this sort of portentous baloney suggests the television apocalypse can’t come soon enough.

Lemme guees? Large crowd again tonight, right?

I mentioned something to Shoe on a thread over at the other board and he came up with the following:

Homer Opener 4/7, beat LA 9-3 in front of 49,057

Since then, when there are 40K or more in the house

5/17 vs. Detroit lost 2-3, att. 48,805
6/14 vs Kansas City lost 3-12, att. 44,615
7/4 vs. Sandiego lost 1-5, att. 49,110

June 15 vs. KC just missed the 40K cut…they lost 3-8 in front of 39,125
__________

We need to start limiting our crowd until the team gets over this shyness

He hasn’t done anything spectacular, but he’s been pretty solid for a mid-rotation guy.

With any kind of offense Webb would probably have 14 wins, Haren 12, Davis 2-3 more wins, Randy a couple more.

by TwinnerA on Jul 5, 2008 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about Webb

Most of his losses have been games he gave up a fair number of runs.

But Haren, Johnson, and Webb would each have two or three more.
