Manny Ramirez traded to Dodgers
The Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon traded Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending the slugger's eight-year run in Boston with a last-minute, three-way deal to beat baseball's non-waivers trade deadline.

Boston gets Jason Bay, Dodgers get Manny Ramirez, and the Pirates get… Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris? Seriously? Is it just my bias, or did the Pirates get mugged in this deal? Who holds what kind of blackmail material on the Pirates front office?
Well, our pitching is going to have to step up. Manny was only 2 for 11 against us this season…

Well, DUH!
From a Keith Law article:
It’s a lineup full of hitters who hit fastballs and bad off-speed stuff, but most of them will chase stuff out of the zone. The Diamondbacks’ dilemma is that - they have a developing young player at almost every position on the field, so trying to upgrade via acquisition would rob a potential star or above-average player of critical development time, setting the team back for 2009 and 2010.
Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong.

How so?
Now they have 5 outfielders and no DH or 1B position to slide one of them to. They have an overpriced, pain in the ass old man that is the worst OF defender in baseball and is getting worse with the bat. Congratulations LA, you may have got yourself one extra win…max. Enjoy!

How much will Manny help?
I keep trying to tell myself that this isn’t going to be as big a move as it probably is. “It won’t help them that much,” I tell myself. “How much can one bat help?” Damn. I really hope not that much. Damn.

We'll see.
On the plus side (for the D-Backs): The Dodgers were already one of the least motivated teams in baseball. Manny isn’t gonna change that.
On the minus side: I don’t want to see Manny batting after Loney. He’s been trouble enough already.

Put into context
Yes it improves their offence slightly but it isn’t as if they weren’t getting production from their outfield as it was, hopefully this won’t improve them that much

The only team this deal makes sense for is the Pirates
The Red Sox trade Hansen, Moss, AND Ramirez for Bay?!?
The Dodgers add a 5th outfielder and $7M for LaRoche and Morris?!
The only way this deal makes sense for the Dodgers is if there’s a Kemp/Ethier/Pierre for a SS trade that hasn’t been reported yet. The Red Sox… I just don’t get it.

“Manny being Manny” translated to “being an ass and sitting out games against pitchers he didn’t want to face” this season. He had pretty much made it clear that he didn’t want to play for the Red Sox and wasn’t giving his full effort. Bay is a good replacement, not a pain-in-the-ass in the clubhouse, and now they’ve got $13 million more they can throw at Sabathia in the off-season.

Well
Manny becomes a regular, Andruw can continue to eat at the buffet before games, but not play, This is a good deal for dodgers considering they only gave up laRoche who has started to fall out of favor with organization and morris is a solid pitcher but coming off TJ. If this is a 2 month rental, dodgers get away with 2 1st rounders and its over

This would have made a lot more sense for the Dodgers...
Before the Jones/Pierre signings. The deal isn’t that bad for ‘Bums since they didn’t have to include Kemp/Etheir/Loney… but it is rather silly that they’ll have to sit their last two big FA signings on the bench to put out the best lineup. However, Manny’s awful defense does make this not that big of a gain for the Dodgers.
The Pirates made out like bandits though.

Looks like a good signing for the Dodgers
from where I’m standing…
They get one of the best hitters in baseball, and he’ll be motivated to stick it to the Sox. They get to sit Pierre and Jones permanently. And they gave up a guy who hardly played.
Now granted, Laroche could turn out to be a keeper, but there are no guarantees there. Our work just got a lot harder.
by paqs on Jul 31, 2008 6:37 PM EDT 0 recs
I'm not so sure...
...our work got a lot harder. It might have gotten a “bit” harder, though. Let’s wait to see how many singles turn into doubles and doubles turn into triples. I know we are talking baseball, but I’ll use the baseball version of a football analogy: the best offense is bad defense.

The team doesn’t revolve around Manny’s sideshow and it will be much better for the Sawx in 5 years when Bay is rake-ing for them than having to deal with this clown.

One thing to point out
As mentioned, Manny had a habit of dodging all the best pitchers, something he’ll be much harder pushed to do in the NL West and with the Dodgers. According to Baseball Prospectus, he was ranked 143 of 181 among all hitters with 100+ PA’s, in quality of pitcher faced, with a line of .247/.327/.389.

I have a friend
who is an avid Dodgers fan, and he’s actually pretty upset about the trade—he’s worried that Manny has nothing left, and that there’s no way he can cover that massive left field in Dodger Stadium. That’s coming from a Dodger fan. I don’t think we need to worry too much.
I'll make it.
by Shums on Jul 31, 2008 8:20 PM EDT 0 recs
Call me a fool, but I really don’t think Manny is going to help them too much. That stat posted above about Manny facing quality pitching is pretty revealing. He won’t be able to duck out of the lineup against tough pitchers now.
But, the real red flag to me is that I can’t see this overpriced veteran loving team actually sitting Jones/Pierre to play Kemp/Ethier. Now, we can all see that Kemp/Ethier would be the way to go. But, I just can’t see the Dodgers actually doing that. And, as previously mentioned and proven by Manny on Friday, the Dodgers are going to give up some runs on balls misplayed to left field now.
Plus, how awful would it be to pitch around Manny if you really had to? Who is going to hit after him who wouldn’t be an easier out than Manny? The Giants had Barry Bonds for years and it didn’t make them a playoff team every year.
In any case, I’ll take Webb and Haren over Manny any day. And he didn’t do too much damage against Randy either. We won Friday’s game without Webb or Haren and starting Clark and Burke, for crying out loud. (Thank you Tony Clark!)
