Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Here we go. Biggest series of the year so far - though I have the feeling that nothing will really be decided here. I think a split is the most likely result, and we'll be left to look down the road at bigger series, yet to come.  That would likely be fine for Arizona: if we can leave Los Angeles with the lead, that's about all I want. Oh, and for the team not to be buried under a pile of rubble when  the Big One hits.

This is a rematch from the last series between the two teams, through Brandon Webb won't thank you for mentioning it. He pitched very well, allowing only one run over eight innings. However, this was the game where Brandon Lyon couldn't retire anyone, blew a 4-1 lead as the Diamondbacks coughed up five runs in the ninth, in one of the most dis-spiriting losses of the season. However, in more evidence for 'momentum' being a myth, we've won seven of the ten games since, our best run in three months, so it clearly had no long-term effect.

At time of writing, it looks like we will be having to face Manny Ramirez before long, as the Dodgers have completed a trade with the Red Sox for the Disgruntled Slugger (TM). See luckycc's FanShot below for details, but it's certainly going to help their offense. Whether the undeniable hit their defense will take - and his rep as a clubhouse cancer - will outweigh this, however, remains to be seen.

Here's some cheering news. "Shortstop Khalil Greene fractured his left hand on Wednesday night when he slammed a storage chest at Petco Park in frustration over his season-long slump." Normally, a player getting injured wouldn't be cause for amusement. But when it's the result of them acting like a petulant five-year old - see also the recent splinterific incident involving TroyBoy - then I think it's fine to snigger loudly. Hey, that's one way to avoid having to play for the woeful Padres: self-mutilation.

You'll have to wait until morning for a report, since it's Mrs. SnakePit's birthday, and so she deserves - and will be getting! - my full attention tonight. There will be dinner; there may be a movie; then, who knows? :-) But it's not going to involve any kind of recap, of that I'm pretty sure...

I suggest that

somebody else step up and do the recap for Jim tonight. He deserves the morning off as well! ;)

I can do it, except my roomie and I watch another tv show at 9 so I may miss the end of the game..

by snakecharmer on Jul 31, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I won't be awake for the start-middle-or end of the game

So rule me out ;) Happy Birthday to Mrs SnakePit though!

I think the whole Manny thing could work in or favour for this series as it obviously distracts attention away from the field and also creates friction between 5 guys battling for 3 spots in the dodgers outfield, 7th inning deathmatch anyone? ;)

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Jul 31, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You mean you haven't turned nocturnal yet? ;)

Yeah, I agree, this will make for a pretty disgruntled group of outfielders…

snigger

that’s a fun word.

I'll make it.

hard question...

if you were down 1 run in the bottom of the ninth in the world series, and a guy on third, 2 outs, who would you rather have batting, assuming they were the only 2 available to bat on your team- andruw jones, or chris burke?

Hello, My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

by utahdbacksfan on Jul 31, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Assuming I couldn’t sneak the bat boy up the plate and also assuming that I forgot to bring my cyanide capsules to the park, then I would choose Chris Burke. My decision is heavily influenced by the runner at third. With no one on base, I would put Jones up there because on the rare occasions he connects, there is power behind his swing. With the tying run at the plate instead of in scoring position, I go with the awful hitter who has a much greater chance of tying the game with one swing.

With a runner on third and playing at home (since we are batting in the bottom of the 9th), then we play for the tie because we are favored in extra innings. . Burke is a light hitter, but it only takes a slap single to score the guy at 3rd. In addition, Burke has some speed and has shown the ability to leg out infield hits. Jones either hits it hard enough to score the running or makes an out while Burke allows for a potential third option of reaching first and extending the inning even if he doesn’t hit the ball hard enough to plate the runner.

Tommy Lasorda has become a Crazy Old Kook

I generally despise the things that ESPN does during the summer, for example, this years ‘Title Town’ feature. But, I didn’t walk away from the tv this year when they did the LA segment, and Lasorda literally couldn’t name ANYTHING significant about the contributions of LA sports teams other than GIbson’s home run.

I mean … USC, UCLA, the Lakers multiple dynasties, the history of the Raiders (when they mattered), Wayne Gretzkey becoming the all time leading scorer in NHL history … and he’s got a home run (granted, pretty memorable, but there were a lot of good things that season. I would argue Hershisers scoreless streak during that pennant run was nearly as impressive)
