Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Here we go. Biggest series of the year so far - though I have the feeling that nothing will really be decided here. I think a split is the most likely result, and we'll be left to look down the road at bigger series, yet to come.  That would likely be fine for Arizona: if we can leave Los Angeles with the lead, that's about all I want. Oh, and for the team not to be buried under a pile of rubble when  the Big One hits.

This is a rematch from the last series between the two teams, through Brandon Webb won't thank you for mentioning it. He pitched very well, allowing only one run over eight innings. However, this was the game where Brandon Lyon couldn't retire anyone, blew a 4-1 lead as the Diamondbacks coughed up five runs in the ninth, in one of the most dis-spiriting losses of the season. However, in more evidence for 'momentum' being a myth, we've won seven of the ten games since, our best run in three months, so it clearly had no long-term effect.

At time of writing, it looks like we will be having to face Manny Ramirez before long, as the Dodgers have completed a trade with the Red Sox for the Disgruntled Slugger (TM). See luckycc's FanShot below for details, but it's certainly going to help their offense. Whether the undeniable hit their defense will take - and his rep as a clubhouse cancer - will outweigh this, however, remains to be seen.

Here's some cheering news. "Shortstop Khalil Greene fractured his left hand on Wednesday night when he slammed a storage chest at Petco Park in frustration over his season-long slump." Normally, a player getting injured wouldn't be cause for amusement. But when it's the result of them acting like a petulant five-year old - see also the recent splinterific incident involving TroyBoy - then I think it's fine to snigger loudly. Hey, that's one way to avoid having to play for the woeful Padres: self-mutilation.

You'll have to wait until morning for a report, since it's Mrs. SnakePit's birthday, and so she deserves - and will be getting! - my full attention tonight. There will be dinner; there may be a movie; then, who knows? :-) But it's not going to involve any kind of recap, of that I'm pretty sure...

I suggest that

somebody else step up and do the recap for Jim tonight. He deserves the morning off as well! ;)

I can do it, except my roomie and I watch another tv show at 9 so I may miss the end of the game..

I won't be awake for the start-middle-or end of the game

So rule me out ;) Happy Birthday to Mrs SnakePit though!

I think the whole Manny thing could work in or favour for this series as it obviously distracts attention away from the field and also creates friction between 5 guys battling for 3 spots in the dodgers outfield, 7th inning deathmatch anyone? ;)

So...time for another drink then?

Yeah, I agree, this will make for a pretty disgruntled group of outfielders…

by Shums on Jul 31, 2008 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

hard question...

if you were down 1 run in the bottom of the ninth in the world series, and a guy on third, 2 outs, who would you rather have batting, assuming they were the only 2 available to bat on your team- andruw jones, or chris burke?

Hello, My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

by utahdbacksfan on Jul 31, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

Well

Assuming I couldn’t sneak the bat boy up the plate and also assuming that I forgot to bring my cyanide capsules to the park, then I would choose Chris Burke. My decision is heavily influenced by the runner at third. With no one on base, I would put Jones up there because on the rare occasions he connects, there is power behind his swing. With the tying run at the plate instead of in scoring position, I go with the awful hitter who has a much greater chance of tying the game with one swing.

With a runner on third and playing at home (since we are batting in the bottom of the 9th), then we play for the tie because we are favored in extra innings. . Burke is a light hitter, but it only takes a slap single to score the guy at 3rd. In addition, Burke has some speed and has shown the ability to leg out infield hits. Jones either hits it hard enough to score the running or makes an out while Burke allows for a potential third option of reaching first and extending the inning even if he doesn’t hit the ball hard enough to plate the runner.

I'll gladly step up to do the recap if no one else will.

Tommy Lasorda has become a Crazy Old Kook

I generally despise the things that ESPN does during the summer, for example, this years ‘Title Town’ feature. But, I didn’t walk away from the tv this year when they did the LA segment, and Lasorda literally couldn’t name ANYTHING significant about the contributions of LA sports teams other than GIbson’s home run.

I mean … USC, UCLA, the Lakers multiple dynasties, the history of the Raiders (when they mattered), Wayne Gretzkey becoming the all time leading scorer in NHL history … and he’s got a home run (granted, pretty memorable, but there were a lot of good things that season. I would argue Hershisers scoreless streak during that pennant run was nearly as impressive)

I just realized

that Diamondbacks “scout” I sat next to at a Giants-Dbacks game a couple years was actually Peter Woodfork, the Asst. GM. I wanted to ask him a question but he and the AZ scout next to him were real douchey looking 30-somethings.

The Tampa Bay scout a row in front of me was a 50 something classic old-school scout type and as he soon as he realized I was interested, he talked my ear off for the rest of the game. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in San Francisco and I was sitting behind home plate for a Brandon Webb start. That was about as good as it gets.

Quick check in:

How goes it, Snakepitters? Went diving today—saw 9 sharks, 2 sea turtles, 2 sea lions, a pod of dolphins, a school of huge eagle rays, eels, some pufferfish, etc. Much to mrssoco’s joy and soco’s chagrin, I am not dead yet.

Also, while boarding the boat early this morning, (wearing a sedona red hat, naturally) I spotted a fellow wearing a Dbacks T-shirt boarding the ferry to Baltra. (Island with the airport) Didn’t get a chance to ask him where he’s from, though. Small world, eh? My uncle asked me why it was so cool, and I replied that the Dbacks don’t have much of a fan base. Somewhat joking, he asked me, “What—isn’t there a “Dbacks Nation”?” I responded, “Yeah…. you’re looking at it.”

Anyway, should be back intown Sunday night. Devin says that I need to stay out of the country until the postseason.

It may sound familiar

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

Hehe.....

I was waiting for that.

Appropriate, too, since I just watched The Count of Monte Cristo two days ago.

I'll help.

Any way to just make sure he stays there?

Maybe the Diamondbacks should just sign me...

If he has any sense of tradition, he should stay there for 300 days.

I haven’t seen it, anyway.

Maybe that’s just proof of how good a liar she can be.

Yeah. In fact,

I’ve already taken….. ::checks camera::..... 837 pictures. I think.

Not to mention the underwater pix, which weren’t taken on my camera.

by Muu on Aug 1, 2008 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I don’t think I got any pics with sharks unfortunately, even though I was swimming with a whitetip today. But I definitely got a pic with a sea turtle while snorkeling. (And holding my breath and diving down to 20 feet to get the shot)

Good to see

Twins fans stay classy.

Knock off the hippie crap, strap on a helmet, and start shooting. This is baseball, Diamondbacks, I want you to storm that beach like it's Normandy!

As a transplanted Twins fan

this makes me very sad.

Think I’ll go watch that put out at home again.

If you're looking for a replay

of Jackson and Snyder’s great play, ESPN has named it their #1 web gem for July.

Saved the best for last, I suppose.

Would have thought it’d be nigh-impossible to beat Romero’s catch, but CoJack and Snyder managed it. =)

Or that sick

Hudson “slap the ball to Tracy for the out” play.

Point

Yeah, that was a beautiful play, but it’s definitely third on my list.

Heh

Dave Burns started the post-game show with the sound clip of CoJack’s throw home, and then made some remark about how he didn’t even need to do a flip to get the ball home.

Is someone working on the recap? If not, I’ll do it.

Okay, cool

Just didn’t want to start on it and realize halfway through you were already done. Guess I could just put it up on my own blog… =)
