D-Backs close to Clark deal
Why?? How will he be used?
this ship has long set sail, why bring it back to port? Can't we actually build from within and for the future instead of trotting out these reruns?
Update, with the basics from the piece
"The Diamondbacks appear to be closing in on a trade with the San Diego Padres that will bring first baseman Tony Clark back to Arizona. After significant discussions in recent days, a deal could be final as soon as today, according to a major league source, who said the Diamondbacks will give up a minor league prospect in the trade.
It appears Clark has agreed to waive his assignment bonus, the $500,000 clause that otherwise would have kicked in when he was traded. The bonus, which served as a form of no-trade protection, was expected to be a hurdle in the negotiations. The Diamondbacks will be responsible for the remainder of Clark's $900,000 salary."

Yeah, that’d be kinda awesome.

I’ll be okay with this deal if bringing him back means his clubhouse presence calms this team down and gets them back on the right track.
And, also, if he does voice over for some more ads.

I think they’re looking for someone to provide some leadership for the team. It’d be nice to have SOMEONE in the dugout who can help the youngsters learn from their mistakes.

I hope we didn't give up anything
If the price is cheap enough, having Tony Clark to come off the bench is better than having Chris Burke to come off the bench. As long as we gave up virtually nobody in the way of prospects.
I’ve never believed there is any help to be had out there. We will win or lose with the bats we have. We aren’t (and shouldn’t) give up any real prospects to rent a bat for 2 months. And we aren’t going to pay big bucks for a batter…
stupidstupidstupid
Right alongside this is the report that the Yanks just signed Sexson for $390K (the prorated minimum of his salary) AND they don’t have to give up anything for him. This would have been a much smarter move. Sexson has more power, hits lefties, and is a second half player. I’m not saying he would have been the Sexson of his Mariner years or anything… but TC???? Sheesh. I’m really irritated with management right now.

In a couple weeks we’ll be begging for anybody but TC’s bat.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"

That's my point.
TC is a definite bench upgrade, if nothing else.
Mark Reynolds: back to turning me gay.
Crazy as it may sound I’d rather have Burke than TC. Burke can’t hit his way out of a paper bag, but TC barely can at this stage… and at least Burke has some position flexibility. We needed a real upgrade and the FO failed to deliver.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
So,
in a pinch hitter, in a fringe player, (24th or 25th roster spot) you’d take youth over any hitting ability whatsoever? When this team already has the youngest position players in the majors and one of the worst offenses?
Mark Reynolds: back to turning me gay.
No, I’d take Sexson… or even Barry. That’s what I’ve been trying to say all along.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
I've been advocating for the FO to get Bonds
for awhile.
But the debate at hand is between Tony Clark and Chris Burke, and in my mind, it’s just about a no-brainer.
Mark Reynolds: back to turning me gay.
I would love to see Bonds too! And after looking at Sexton’s BA vs lefties (.344), I think he would have made a great platoon-mate for Tracy.
But I think the D-Backs already have the players they need to win, they just need to take their mistakes in stride and learn to play consistently.
"We...probed them all the way through. They're completely meat." — Terry Bisson
Also noted
That his BABIP is .364, unsustainable – his career BABIP is .293, so you’d be foolish to expect more than .260 from him going forward. Also, if he had any value at all, don’t you think the Mariners would have held onto him?
by Jim McLennan on Jul 17, 2008 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions
No… the debate at hand (look at my first post above) was that SEXSON was a better acquisition than TC. You threw out the Chris Burke thing and I bit, but believe me, I’m not wringing my hands that TC is taking Burke’s roster spot (sigh… whatever) even if I slightly disagree with that. What I’m frustrated about was the deal that wasn’t and should have been done.
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
Well, if that is true,
then why would you want to go on and on talking about Chris Burke when the debate we’re really interested in is Richie Sexson vs. Tony Clark? To involve Chris Burke in that debate seems like using him as a bit of a straw man….
Mark Reynolds: back to turning me gay.

I know this is repeating my previous post,
but what makes you think that Sexson would have wanted to sign with us given:
a – his past negative history here
b – the obvious understanding that most of the fans here hate him
c – it’s the NL and there’s only one spot for him to play and two first basemen already on the roster
d – the Yankees wanted to sign him
I think had the Diamondbacks acquired him it would have turned into the BK Kim waiver wire pick up v. 2.0.

A few reasons:
1) We have a better chance of making the playoffs
2) You think we have a logjam at 1B? The Yankees are worse: Giambi, Betemit, and Duncan.
3) He has a better chance to win the starting job at 1B outright.
4) I don’t really think many fans here hate Richie. Even most hard core fans don’t hate Richie… they hate the deal that sent him here… and they hate the circumstances of his injury.
5) Richie’s personality seems much better suited for AZ than NYC (hello boo-bird magnet).
"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball"
-- Bill Veeck
1) We may have
a better chance of making the playoffs, but the Yankees are a better team and are still the most storied franchise in the history of baseball. Hell, if I was a fringe player on the downside of my career I’d pick the Yankees over the Diamondbacks just to see what all the hooplah is about. Baseball players want to play for winners, not .500 ball clubs that may barely squeak into the postseason on account of playing in the worst division in baseball. Nobody’s going to go out of their way to play for this team unless they’re also looking to get some work in on their golf game.
2,3)There’s no way Sexson is going to win the starting job outright. If that’s what he’s hoping for then I’m glad he’s looking elsewhere. Also, Tracy and CJ are flat out better players than Wilson and Betemit.
4) It may not be rational for the fans here to hate Richie (As usual, I blame Joe Jr.), but I think you underestimate how synonymous Sexson is with that 108 loss team. To those fans Sexson was a bum that didn’t produce, got injured and then left to go cash checks elsewhere leaving the team that traded their entire starting infield to get him in the lurch. If the fans still held a grudge against BK, they’ll hold one for Sexson.
Two thoughts.
Firstly, in response to John’s #2, um… the Yankees also have a DH spot to fill. Secondly, dahlian, you of all people should know that we lost 111 games that year, not 108.

That doesn't matter
once a player on the forty man roster is “optioned” to the minors for that season, that option year has been used up. Each player has three options years before they must be placed on waivers, but the number of times that a player is sent up and down within a single season has no bearing on the number of options used up.

I just find it funny
That people will boycott the team when making a great move (talking about signing Bonds) and not get as worked up when they make a terrible move like this one.
Seriously, I have never been so let down by this front office, there were plenty of other options out their to help us improve this offense and we chose one of the dumbest.
I guess this will bring back the leadership that was much needed in the club house. I mean a lot of the other guys look up to him and somehow that will improve their on base percentage because we all know that worked out so well last year.[/sarcasm]
Yeah we actually have a higher team OBP this year then last. The need for veteran leadership is a cop out (a false one as well) for shitty players.
I hope the FO doesn't think this trade
will be the fix we need to win the West. Not with Young and Upton batting as bad as they are. I think Young is the most frustrating to me because he is suppose to have so much talent but is hitting .220. Upton is still very young and really shouldn’t be here at this point in his career. Someone needs to show Young some film of his swing and help him change his approach at the plate.

I was talking to Levski. Maybe this is the first volley?
I think the FO might be getting ready for something else. TC on the bench and Tracy (or Reynolds or D’Antona or more) for Xavier Nady. I know they are interested in Nady and that might clear the “logjam” at the corners. Not sure I like it as a whole, but that would make some sense. More than picking up another 1st baseman…
I would be interested to see what else is coming, but it would be a shame to get rid of Reynolds. He’s one of the D-Backs most promising young players and I would hate to get rid of him before we see what he can do.

Hmmmm....

But could David Wright turn me gay?
Mark Reynolds: back to turning me gay.
I think most of the criticism here
is extremely knee jerk.
This has the potential to be good or bad depending on how Clark is used. One of the biggest needs for this team is a late bat of the bench and Clark still can provide that. There just aren’t that many ways to improve this team without giving up a core player. Clark can provide improvement around the margins while also being a good clubhouse presence. I know that it’s easy to mock that last aspect, but when it comes down to the last guy on the bench there’s no reason not to factor it in.
Is this going to single-handedly turn around the Diamondbacks season? Of course not, but it’s better the continually running Burke out there as a pinch hitter and it also improves the team without doing anything dramatic and long-term damaging like trading for Bay.
Do I wish the team would sign Bonds, yes, but that collusive ship has sailed. And as for Sexson, are you guys smoking crack? Not only is his bat slower than Clark’s but he’s going to bring just about as much negative baggage with him to this team as Bonds is only without the talent to make up for it. And do you think he would even want to sign with us? It would take his agent about five minutes of googling to realize how much Arizona fans hate him. After his first 0-4 night he’ll be (unfairly) booed mercilessly. You may not like it, or think it rational, but unless Richie has a Fukudome-like first week the boo-birds and the countdown to Sexson’s release would definitely become a story.
Obviously, those are all hypotheticals, but in my experience with the local fans and media, likely ones. They also make you wonder why the hell Sexson would sign for this under .500 team with bad history when the Yankees are also after you?
I'm apathetic
I don’t think this affects the Diamondbacks for good or bad. I would hope that the FO can pull of something more than merely get back Tony Clark, which feels more like a stunt to appease people than to actually do any good.
One thing I think they should consider (and I apologize to who ever first suggested this) putting Mark Reynolds in right field a little and see how he does. He’s too potent of a hitter to sit out, and Upton could use some more seasoning, so it could give us a better lineup than bringing out Barf, err I mean Burke.
By all means hit at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
Well
I explored my thinking in the other thread but for the record here I don’t have any problems with this deal, we haven’t given up anything (in the short to middle term) and we have someone who can hopefully act as a slump stomper in the short term and a role model that has a positive impact in the long term.
So...time for another drink then?
Meh.
Obviously I’ve been quite busy as I haven’t had a chance to really respond to this move. The subject of my comment is my reaction to the move, pretty much. I think every thing that was said about Clark when we let him go during the off season still applies, perhaps to a great extent. He’s old. He’s limited to one position defensively. His left handed swing has been pretty bad since his injury IIRC in 06. He can still hit LHP at a decent clip, which is hopefully all he’ll see as part of a platoon with Chad Tracy. I think this move was obviously made as an attempt to help the club house chemistry – something that I normally don’t buy in to. However, I think the chemistry of the clubhouse does affect the development of young players. Yeah, we do have some legitimate HOF veteran presence in Randy Johnson, but I don’t think that does much for the position players. I would think it’d be much easier for a guy like Justin Upton to find a mentor in a position player like Tony Clark rather than an intimidating hall of fame pitcher like Randy.
Now, to look at what we gave up: 123 strike outs to just 24 walks in 91.1 IP, with a 2.27 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. For a 22 year old pitcher splitting time between Rookie, A, and A+ ball. Of course, I have no idea what kind of stuff the guy has, but i wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a quality middle reliever or closer
Dear Josh Byrnes: Please DFA Chris Burke. Give D'antona a chance. Trade for someone that actually knows how to hit.

From the aether
I heard that he featured a 90 MPH fast ball and a big looping curveball. It would make sense considering his insane go/ao rates.(rates that would be ideal for Petco but a death sentence in Chase).
All in all, he may turn into a decent middle reliever in the Heath Bell mould, but I won’t be shedding any tears over his loss.
Bickley Online (fwiw)
I know, it isn’t about the cubbies, so can he really write a decent piece about the dbacks?

Desperate Diamondbacks
Many believe the Diamondbacks’ acquisition of Tony Clark is also an admission of guilt. As in, they messed up in letting the Zen master of the 2007 clubhouse leave for San Diego in the first place.
Not true. Clark was hitting .239 with one home run and 11 RBI with the Padres. That’s nothing to be missed.
What is true is that the Diamondbacks front office may have miscalculated the growth curve of some of their young players. Their belief that the core of this team would mature and ripen was the main reason they didn’t pursue a big bat to anchor the lineup in the offseason. It was how they rationalized that quirky statistic from last year, how the Diamondbacks won their division while getting outscored by their opponents.
At the beginning of the year, when the Diamondbacks were a tour de force, it appeared the judgment of General Manager Josh Byrnes was nothing short of brilliant. Now that the team is struggling to stay over. 500, dealing with injuries and grasping for an identity, it’s beginning to look like a bad mistake.
Either way, credit the Diamondbacks for soothing over a relationship gone sour (remember how Clark was incensed with the organization’s negotiating tactics following last season?). And credit Byrnes for swallowing his pride and addressing a big need.
Maybe the heavy role and the familiar surroundings of Chase Field will rekindle the Tony Clark magic, and ignite a fire under this sagging team.

I agree with that to an extent
I really think TC will light a fire under the guys. I’m excited for the second half
Baseball season, when everything becomes right in the world.

me too
He’s a clown of the worst order… I’ve never forgiven him for his treatment of the Dbacks and their fans in 2004 on his show.
Yeah, that was the season from hell, but heaven forbid we here in ARIZONA care enough to still want to talk about OUR team.

Makes no sense
Though a lack of logic is a regular feature in Bickley’s output. In one paragraph, he says “There’s nothing to be missed,” based upon Clark’s performance this season. But he also credits Josh Byrnes, “for swallowing his pride and addressing a big need” – presumably the “big bat to anchor the lineup,” he speaks about earlier. Which is it?
In addition, if he thinks Clark will be “anchoring the line-up,” I strongly suspect [and fervently hope] that he is wildly mistaken. He’ll get the odd start at first against left-handed pitching – and there’s not one of those in our immediate future.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The first is never get involved in a land war in Asia. The second, only slightly less well known, is this: never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha --
