Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

I hope you have your caffeinated beverage of choice ready for this one, since it begins at a crisp hour, especially for a Sunday morning. If I do not actually sound highly-caffeinated, that would be because I am actually writing this about twelve hours before any of you are seeing it. So, apologies if I seem somewhat disconnected. i am about to go lie down, watch a movie and then curl up with Mrs. SnakePit for a solid eight hours, rather than get ready to watch any baseball.

Haren has been our best starting pitcher in June by quite some margin, posting an ERA of 1.59 and with a 3-0 record in his five outings so far and a WHIP of just 0.76 this month. It'd be nice to get the win, and take the series, even if the best this road-trip can go is still only 3-6. The offense finally showed some signs of life yesterday, though Olsen is likely a significantly better pitcher than Miller. We did enjoy our first big inning in quite some time, and maybe - just maybe - we can do some damage today. Although, here is today's disturbing stat: the last time the Diamondbacks scored more than four runs in consecutive games was April 25-26. Ouch...

It's all relative

I’m up, for the moment, but will probably end up heading back to bed in a bit. I just didn’t want to disturb Chris with my being awakeness.

I'm also awake

banished to the living room with a laptop and headphones, so as not to disturb the sleeping wife.

Insomnia hit me last night. Anyway, I guess I’ll stay up till the game’s over

Yes.

But I’ll see if I can make a coherent contribution anyway. Maybe some breakfast will help.

Yes.

Two days later, Eric Byrnes missed three games for excessive crying, and started listening to emo. At the same time, Emily changed her name to emilylovesthedbacksexceptthatloserericbyrnes.

I should mention that Scott Olsen is on my fantasy team

Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, considering my team’s name is last place and is currently in last place.

by Zephon on Jun 29, 2008 12:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, the good news is...

Byrnes isn’t leading off. Indeed, he’s not actually in the starting lineup today at all. The bad news is, we’ve got Chris Burke instead, who may be the only player, both at the plate and in the field, capable of making us yearn for the return of Eric.

  1. S. Drew ss .255
  2. J. Upton rf .240
  3. O. Hudson 2b .295
  4. C. Jackson 1b .306
  5. M. Reynolds 3b .254
  6. C. Young cf .233
  7. C. Burke lf .168
  8. M. Montero c .247
  9. D. Haren p .152

However, Melvin asserts that we’re not the boss of him, and so we still have a leadoff hitters with an on-base percentage below .300, in Stephen Drew. Sigh.

Out of interest...

Does the US care about its National team? is it a big event when their games are on during the World Cup etc? Over here it goes mad, they think England not qualifying has cost the economy £1 Billion…and I tend to believe that figure with the amount of booze bought :D

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Jun 29, 2008 2:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You have to look at it in comparison

to how popular the sport is overall. The nation doesn’t stop, certainly, and a lot of people probably don’t even know what’s going on, but when World Cup comes it seems more people pay attention. I think part of the problem is that a lot people don’t understand all the tournaments the National team plays, and so only cares when it’s the big shabang. That’s pretty consistent across the board for most people for most sports here.

By all means hit at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.

Yeah

I just wondered how ‘Team USA’ was viewed, over here the national team is a big thing but I know most of the sports Americans are interested in are sports played by so few countries I guess its hard to get behind the National side?

So...time for another drink then?

by Wimb on Jun 29, 2008 2:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's true

there’s probably three main groups of supporters for the National team. First there’s Sam’s Army which is an actual organization (generally the people in all red you might see at a US soccer game), then there’s the people that follow the major competitions and maybe some other things, might check out the team if they’re close by. The last and probably largest is the people that don’t think about soccer until the World Cup comes, and some not even until the later rounds.

Reynolds on pace for 28 errors this year

That’d be a franchise record for a third-baseman, beating Tracy’s mark of 25 in both 2004 and 2006. Another unearned run… :-(

Dammit Jim

Between that stat and O-Dawgs earlier…. we need some positive stats ;)

So...time for another drink then?

How about

Reynolds also on pace for 32 HR and 97 RBI?
