Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
I hope you have your caffeinated beverage of choice ready for this one, since it begins at a crisp hour, especially for a Sunday morning. If I do not actually sound highly-caffeinated, that would be because I am actually writing this about twelve hours before any of you are seeing it. So, apologies if I seem somewhat disconnected. i am about to go lie down, watch a movie and then curl up with Mrs. SnakePit for a solid eight hours, rather than get ready to watch any baseball.
Haren has been our best starting pitcher in June by quite some margin, posting an ERA of 1.59 and with a 3-0 record in his five outings so far and a WHIP of just 0.76 this month. It'd be nice to get the win, and take the series, even if the best this road-trip can go is still only 3-6. The offense finally showed some signs of life yesterday, though Olsen is likely a significantly better pitcher than Miller. We did enjoy our first big inning in quite some time, and maybe - just maybe - we can do some damage today. Although, here is today's disturbing stat: the last time the Diamondbacks scored more than four runs in consecutive games was April 25-26. Ouch...

I should mention that Scott Olsen is on my fantasy team

Well, the good news is...
Byrnes isn’t leading off. Indeed, he’s not actually in the starting lineup today at all. The bad news is, we’ve got Chris Burke instead, who may be the only player, both at the plate and in the field, capable of making us yearn for the return of Eric.
- S. Drew ss .255
- J. Upton rf .240
- O. Hudson 2b .295
- C. Jackson 1b .306
- M. Reynolds 3b .254
- C. Young cf .233
- C. Burke lf .168
- M. Montero c .247
- D. Haren p .152
However, Melvin asserts that we’re not the boss of him, and so we still have a leadoff hitters with an on-base percentage below .300, in Stephen Drew. Sigh.
Well, to be fair
we aren’t the boss of him.

Out of interest...
Does the US care about its National team? is it a big event when their games are on during the World Cup etc? Over here it goes mad, they think England not qualifying has cost the economy ÂŁ1 Billion…and I tend to believe that figure with the amount of booze bought :D
So...time for another drink then?
You have to look at it in comparison
to how popular the sport is overall. The nation doesn’t stop, certainly, and a lot of people probably don’t even know what’s going on, but when World Cup comes it seems more people pay attention. I think part of the problem is that a lot people don’t understand all the tournaments the National team plays, and so only cares when it’s the big shabang. That’s pretty consistent across the board for most people for most sports here.
By all means hit at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
Yeah
I just wondered how ‘Team USA’ was viewed, over here the national team is a big thing but I know most of the sports Americans are interested in are sports played by so few countries I guess its hard to get behind the National side?
So...time for another drink then?
That's true
there’s probably three main groups of supporters for the National team. First there’s Sam’s Army which is an actual organization (generally the people in all red you might see at a US soccer game), then there’s the people that follow the major competitions and maybe some other things, might check out the team if they’re close by. The last and probably largest is the people that don’t think about soccer until the World Cup comes, and some not even until the later rounds.
By all means hit at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
Yeah, in bthe soccer competitions here
teams that are the equivalent of double A have a chance to win so the interest is wider spread

Heh
No i meant for the UEFA cup final, there were riots from Rangers fans in Manchester because 1 of the giant screens failed
So...time for another drink then?
Not real sure
some parts of the nation are more into football (soccer) than others. But I hear our local sports talk radio mention soccer news a lot more now than ever before.
I get into it and the few times I have brought it up at sports bars, most other customers seem somewhat knowledgeable about what is going on.

At the start of the season? No,
but that’s because Webb was just so ridiculously dominant. Now, I’d say yes. He’s stepping up and giving us a boost like Davis did last year when Webb was faltering a bit.
By all means hit at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.
I was just thinking about that this morning
recently most definitely, but as a whole, Webb’s been better. I really think both should finish top 5 CY voting at the end of the year

Lately yes
Webb got off to a great start and you never thought he would get beat, but the way Haren is grinding out quality start after quality start despite the woefull offence has really made me really appreciate the guy. That being said he doesn’t have that glaring Webb spotlight on him
So...time for another drink then?
overall, no.
I would say yes though to the past month.

Interesting play
Hudson not catching the pop-up in front of him at second. I think he was hoping Ramirez would pull a Hudson and not run it out. Great K by Haren: i think that’s the end of his day. Six outs to get, but it doesn’t look like we’ll get five runs back to back, for the first time since April.
If that's true,
then it’s an amazing deke, because from the moment the ball was hit Hudson had both hands up in the air to fight the sun. I think it was just an unfortunately placed pop up.
Good Grief
