D'backs V. Red Sox: overflow thread
Seventh inning stretch and D'backs lead 2-0, so I summon the power of Rachel Nichols to guide our boys home some more.
Get the Wrong Sox out and tack on some more runs!

Ordinal form of a number indicating I've posted quickly!
Keep it up, Haren!

I prefer Ashley... but ok let's hope it works

I can't close the other one
I don’t have the power. I can’t make it stronger. Snakecharmer or kishi, could you close the other?

I don’t think I can either- that power may be the limited province of Jim.

Doesn’t that mean, “Hey, you can’t tell anyone what happened at the game unless we tell you we can”?

Speaking as a Sox fan, he should.
Haren’s been extremely sharp and hasn’t really been outdone by any Sox hitter today at any point. Have to think our (Sox) lineup would get a lift just from another pitcher being out there.

I would have liked to have seen Haren stay out there, but he was at 98 pitches, so I guess they didn’t want to stretch him out too much longer?

Speaking of the Saints of Snakepit
We haven’t seen many appearances by the Holy Trio. St. Penelope seems to be the most common, but we almost never see Selma Hayek or that other one from Resident Evil.
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
Yeah, sure
the last one was decreed by Jim at one point last year, but I don’t think she ever made an actual appearance in a game.
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
She entered the pantheon
Because we were at the cinema, watching Resident Evil: Extinction, when we clinched a playoff spot last season: I hope Milla has another film due out in late September… It’s true, though: not been much St. Penelope action, but I tend to think that the less we invoke, the better the results when we need her. Witness the game against Oakland, where we invoked Penelope, immediately before J-Up smacked the go-ahead homer off Foulke in the eighth. You do not mess with that kind of mojo!
by Jim McLennan on Jun 24, 2008 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Milla is tops on my list
of everything.
If I ever posted a picture to a Gameday thread, it would definitely be of her and probably from this film.
Also, this picture is just begging to be used in a game scenario. Most likely it would be an invocation of the goddess in hopes that she can intervene the next time BoMel calls for a bunt.
I'm just sayin'
maybe there’s room for more in the Pantheon.
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
I would certainly second her nomination,

Yeah, but whose side is she on?
Rachael was invoked with the score 2-0, and under her protection, Peña imploded, the Red Sox got one run back and almost tied the game. I think I would like some more any convincing evidence of her divine status before admitting her to the pantheon.
by Jim McLennan on Jun 24, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Let's keep some standards here.
It takes at least one gameday miracle to initiate the process of beatification and at least one more miraculous event before full-fledged sainthood is accorded.
Also, the fairer posters should be encouraged to explore and seek out their own Diamondback martyrs and saints. Of course, they’d probably just waste the opportunity on posting more Mark Reynolds and Connor Jackson pics. Pssshaw…
How about this for convincing evidence?
1. We won.
2. We won on the road.
3. We won on the road against the best team in the AL.
4. We won on the road against the best team in the AL on national TV.
5. We won while only scoring 2 runs, we didn’t blow the lead the way we did in TWO OF THE THREE games in MN, etc.
In fact, in light of our performance against the Twins, I’d say that the fact that we invoked Her and hung on to win AT ALL would be a sign that somehow, She prevented our players from sucking as much as in the Twin Cities.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
Sorry, not convinced
If she’d been invoked before the game, you’d have a case. However, waiting until after six shutout innings of one-hit ball from Haren and after we’d taken a 2-0 lead renders this a post-facto miracle, and as such, highly unimpressive. In fact, the evidence is that we did rather better before she was invoked; I have serious doubts that she is our saint at all.
by Jim McLennan on Jun 24, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
We did better
before she was invoked, also, early in games 2 and 3 against the Twins. What I’m saying is that invoking her broke the pattern of late Dbacks collapses. You’re not going to be able to keep the Red Sux from scoring - especially at home. But we were able to limit a hard-slugging team to 1 run - with one of their best hitters at the plate and 2 men on.
You can’t compare it to earlier in the game. You have to compare it to a control group. That’s the Twins series.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
O RLY?
[ You’re not going to be able to keep the Red Sux from scoring – especially at home. ]
Actually, we had. For six straight innings. Without her assistance. Even the best hitters fail seven times out of ten, so any claim of divinity based on a single at-bat is pretty weak. And the best control group is clearly not another series, but the same opposition, before she was invoked – she fails miserably there:
Before RP: 2 runs scored, 2 baserunners allowed in 6 IP, no runs conceded
After RP: 0 runs scored, 5 baserunners allowed in 3 IP, one run conceded.
Look, I’m not expecting her to match St. Penelope levels of mojo. But when the opposition indisputably play better after she gets invoked, I just can’t see why she should be allowed within a mile of the D-backs pantheon.
by Jim McLennan on Jun 24, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions
RLY.
Actually, we had. For six straight innings. Without her assistance.
Haren’s last 4 starts before yesterday: 2-0, 27 IP, 6 ER, 0.85 WHIP. Haren’s strong start was understandable and expected. She came in when Haren was getting gassed, and that’s the reaon any runs were allowed at all under her stewardship. Even St. Penelope doesn’t usually pitch a shutout. Not to mention the fact that 2 out of the last 3 times she’s been invoked, IIRC, she’s failed to come through for us.
But to see Rachel’s effect on OUR TEAM, you have to compare the outcome to previous series’. Although the BoSox lost 2 of 3 to the Cards, they averaged 4 runs/game. To find out whether or not she affects the Dbacks’ performance, look at how we did last night compared to our ultimate results from the Twins series: although we averaged 2 runs per game against Minnesota, we couldn’t pull out a single win. This time, we scored 2 and got a victory. Obviously, the guys themselves aren’t doing anything differently—so it must be something else.
Additionally, the big inning was what did us in vs. the Twins. As you noted, that’s 17 runs scored in 3 innings. Last night, Tony P came dangerously close to giving up one of those: instead, he managed to hold the Sox to 1 run. Besides, I really have to blame Sutton for that 1 run, because he mentioned that Tony had only given up 1 ER over the month of June.
Finally, let’s just look at the W/L %:
Record without Rachel - 39-37. Barely over .500.
Record with Rachel - 1-0. Undefeated.
Statistical analysis suggests that if soco had invoked her starting at the beginning of the season, we might have gone 162-0. Don’t you want us to go 162-0, Jim? Why do you hate the Dbacks??
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
The solution is simple
We give her a proper, full-game audition tomorrow. If she can pull a win out of her…handbag against the Red Sox with Johnson on the mound, I’m happy to admit that she deserves to get in.
You are tasked: find me the best picture…
by Jim McLennan on Jun 24, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Well,
I didn’t argue for her to immediately replace St. Penelope; or even for us to canonize her. I only felt that there was the possibility of supplementing her.
The full-game audition sounds like a good idea. However, I will have to defer to soco to find the best picture.

Have the Dodgers lost yet?
You're just mad bacause you didn't post her
I invoked her for two reasons: one for the Red Sox to get out quickly (they did, minus that eighth) and for more runs (which she did not grant). If anything you could argue that she’s a defensive saint, whereas St. Penelope is almost always invoked for offensive purposes. Not everything is offense, you know.

Interesting idea
There really is no delineation of powers for the Snakepit pantheon, perhaps there should be.

April taught us that this team is a juggernaut when it has great hitting, defense, and pitching. And this shows us that they can win big games when they even get two of the three working.

Valid
But many teams can’t put together great displays in all three- April showed that, when the D-backs get things going, they can do all three.
But my point is, they need to learn that they can win games when they get two of the three working.

well,
I have a familial migraine condition- atypical familial hemiplegic migraines. the way my doc explained it, you can either go on a preventative medication to stop them before they start, or an abortive med to take at the first sign of an attack. I’m on the preventative (topomax) because I don’t know the migraine is coming until it knocks me on my ass- that’s what makes mine atypical- no aura. I have the visual symptoms and the nausea and such, but nothing as a warning.

I'm wondering
whether we need to make a few changes around here. I think our authors are pretty solid, but we could maybe afford to trade for another editor, or perhaps a poster with a pretty good average, to compete with soco and I. This slump we’ve been in is just plain unacceptable.
Maybe some of those posters who were banned by Lookout Landing could be had for cheap off the waiver wire. Maybe all they needed was a change in scenery. Plus, that way, if we have to cut ‘em, no great loss.

Let's not be too hasty
Maybe we’ve had some problems, but I’m not sure bringing in outside help is the way to go. We’ve got some good chemistry here, and I don’t know if we should futz with that too much. We’ve shown we can do it, it’s just a matter of focus and getting the fundamentals done- avoiding typos, remembering when the game starts, paying attention to who just got a hit. We’ve all made the mistakes, now we need to learn not to make them. It’s times like these where veteran leadership in the threads becomes crucial.
I say we wait until the All Star Break before we decide if we want to make any moves.
Currently blaming the D-backs struggles on: the Diamondbacks scoring fewer runs than the other team. Well, I was bound to get it right eventually.
This is an excellent point.

You’re right, and I shouldn’t be pointing fingers. It all starts with each one of us. I’ve made a lot of typos lately that I didn’t used to make, and I don’t always immediately correct them. I know that I’ve missed the start times of a few games lately, even though it’s prominently posted on the Snakepit front page. If we can all just work on the fundamentals, we can make a difference in our performance even without getting some new blood.
Still, a trade or two shouldn’t be out of the question. I suppose I agree with waiting until the ASB. One poster who doesn’t see a lot of playing time anymore is foulpole. Like Chris Burke, foulpole looked REALLY good as a new addition in Spring Training and early in the season, albeit without much power. As time went on, (unlike Chris Burke) he showed himself to be a poster with a good average but a complete inability to defend his positions. I mean, how many line drives have we seen hit towards foulpole that he just completely missed, ignored, or ducked under? Still, his high average may make him worth more to SBN sites that value that—Gaslamp Ball, of course, comes to mind, as does Bleed Cubbie Blue. Recent events have shown that Lookout Landing might be a good trade destination as well.
Of course, if we can’t get a good poster in a trade, I wouldn’t be adverse to optioning him down to Minorleagueball.com and giving him another chance. That might be the best SBN blog for him to work on his defense.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
However,
I do realize that I’d probably be deluding myself to think that we could get another editor for foulpole; but we might be able to get a young and upcoming editor of the future. You can never have too much good young talent.
