Gameday Thread, #76: 6/22 vs. Twins
Arizona Diamondbacks at Minnesota Twins, Jun 22, 2008 2:10 PM EDT

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
This might be kind of fun, as we face former D-back, Livan Hernandez, no doubt led to the pitcher's mound by a trail of biscuit crumbs. Hernandez 2.0 has been exactly what you'd expect, and what we know and "love" from last year. Opponents are batting a meaty .349 off him, and that goes up to .379 with runners in scoring position. But somehow, he still leads Minnesota in wins. Having sat through enough of his outings for us last year, we know exactly how their fans must feel about him.
We really need Brandon Webb to bounce back from one of the worst outings in his stellar career. He thinks the contract negotiations, which were finally tabled earlier in the week, wore on him: "It's off my mind now. It's not something I'm thinking about. I'm just going to go out there and pitch; we're still talking about 2 1/2 years here. Yeah, I was very disappointed that we didn't get it done, but I'm moving on from that. I've got a responsibility to pitch for these guys in here and for the fans." We'll see what happens: the 'dead arm' which has been affecting Webb over his past couple of outings seems like more than contract negotiations.

Well, the team
cannot use the excuse of not ever seeing Livan before. I hope like hell we light him up.
But deep down, I fear Livan will get a no hitter today.
and OT, good grief, it is already 105º this morning. Laptop and Radio by the pool time!

Buyer or Seller? Hensons article on Yahoo
Arizona Diamondbacks – Baby ‘Backs have grown into Adolescent ‘Backs and the pitching is postseason primed. But should they lull themselves into complacency because the rest of the NL West is pathetic and fail to land a bat, they will regret it in October.
what team has he been watching?

Yup, PR mentioned that article as it related to Matt Holliday.
My response was—well, when was the last time the Dbacks traded for a power bat? Richie Sexson? Raul Mondesi??

Got errands to do around Sin City this afternoon, but now I’ll be sweating from more than just this oppressive heat. Livan is on the hill today? Think we might hear the name “Houdini” from Gracie before this one is through?

soco's keys to the game
1) Think about getting food before the game starts so I don’t starve to death
2) Have mass quantities of alcohol near by, just in case
3) Dessert?
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
You forgot
4) Avoiding letting the Twins score six runs in an inning.
I feel this might be helpful. Not sure how much we’ll be around. I might have to head down to Buckeye and hand out fliers for our next lucha-libre show. That would not be my preferred option…

So I suppose I shouldn't post today
as the last two nights have been a disaster with me around.
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
I was hoping that we could get some walks today, but then I read that Livo’s walks are way down this season from last. Then again, we haven’t been able to get hits, let alone walks, off just about anyone we faced lately, so why should today be any different.
Just hoping Webb’s on his game today and hope for the best!
It was a response to:
Then again, we haven’t been able to get hits, let alone walks, off just about anyone we faced lately, so why should today be any different.
and
What we need to hope for than is HPB
I thought it was self explanatory. Why do you ask?
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
He said that we can't get walks and what we need to hope for is HBP,
so telling us that we only have 2 guys out of 8 positions that can walk seems like useless information.
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.
9 positions
in an AL park. And I don’t exactly think it’s “useless information”. I’m just noting that we shouldn’t really expect walks anyway.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
He didn't say anything about getting walks,
which is why he said hoping for HBP.
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.
But the previous comment did:
Then again, we haven’t been able to get hits, let alone walks, off just about anyone we faced lately, so why should today be any different.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
So why are you saying that we have only 2 guys that can get walks?
What’s the point of noting it?
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.
I was noting that we CAN get walks.
But only really from two members of our roster.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
No, we can't get walks.
I don’t consider having 2 guys that can get walks, as proof that we can get walks.
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.
Okay, srdmad. You're right. I'm wrong. It was a dumb comment.
Are you looking for a fight or something?

Today's lineup
- S. Drew ss .268
- A. Ojeda 2b .308
- O. Hudson dh .298
- C. Jackson lf .303
- C. Tracy 1b .254
- M. Reynolds 3b .248
- C. Young cf .236
- C. Snyder c .240
- J. Upton rf .243
Hudson is the designated designated hitter for the day, as it were, which is interesting. At least temporarily, we’ve abandoned the Romero and Salazar in right-field idea, and gone back to Jackson out there. With Webb on the mound, this probably makes sense.

Currently blaming the D-backs struggles on: the Diamondbacks scoring fewer runs than the other team. Well, I was bound to get it right eventually.
Another damn skidder
Through the infield, thanks to the carpet. I vote the new stadium for Minnesota should just lay down some nice parquet flooring instead of grass.
I'm serious, Snyder really HAS gotten better at throwing out basestealers
as the season has gone on.
CERTAINLY better than Miggy….

Agree with the latter part
But last year, he threw out 29 of 81 = 36%. This season, it’s now 10 of 27 = 37%. So not really much difference.

That went to hell pretty quickly
When I said we should avoid six-run inning, I didn’t mean we should let them get five and then get a double-play.
Of course, after getting two on with nobody out, then contriving to leave the bases empty in the top of the inning, this implosion was probably inevitable.

Funny
how my edit (which also had a smiley on it, btw), has been turned into a Colangelo referendum, when I was simply joining an existing debate re farm system v manager as the primary cause of the team’s woes. My comment really had nothing directly to do with Jerry – I just think blaming the manager (reigning MOY) for everything, implicitly let’s the current team’s architects largely off the hook.
by Diamondhacks on Jun 22, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Because
Of course, Jeff Moorad is responsible for Orlando Hudson being our DH today, and also for getting him to try and bunt. Which is where the discussion started – that is, if you noticed…
The thing is, we can’t go back and redraft, or take back the Quentin deal, etc. No point crying over split milk. But we can get Melvin to stop making stupid decisions, and that will help us in futire.
by Jim McLennan on Jun 22, 2008 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions
No one remotely implied
the FO is responsible for Hudson bunting (which is superficial kvetching anyway ), or Hudson as today’s DH (another hindsight aside). The FO is responsible, however, for fronting a good pitching, lousy hitting team that reflects some dubious investments to date and an enviable inheritance. Responsible, if you will, for Orlando being the team’s best position player three years running.
Why that overriding reality gets brushed aside once the game starts, in favor of slamming Melvin for everything, I cant say. Maybe because Kevin Seitzer isnt available.

No fun
Much though I enjoy seeing England lose on them. :-)

Yep. And failing that
For whoever is beating England on penalties. Usually Germany or Argentina. :-)

My uncle
(now divorced from my aunt, so I’m not sure if he’s still my uncle or not) played for the Scottish national team awhile ago… late 80s, early 90s, somewhere in there…. he actually got a scholarship out of Scotland to go to Harvard and play soccer.
I still have a Scottish jersey, actually, that he gave me back in the day. (Of course it doesn’t fit anymore….)
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
Espana!

Currently blaming the D-backs struggles on: the Diamondbacks scoring fewer runs than the other team. Well, I was bound to get it right eventually.
Alright ladies and gents
I’m going to finally watch Once Upon a Time in a America.
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.
It's probably
Better than The Nest. :-)

I thought that was okay
like I said, it had some minor problems that could have been corrected but overall was good. It’s a kind of movie that honestly could have cut almost all of it’s dialogue and would have been stronger in the end.

OUaTiA
Is kinda regarded as a classic, I must admit. Seen any other Leone films?

Actually,
now I think I might watch Once Upon A Time In The West. I’ve seen the Man With No Name trilogy, of course.
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
I'm gonna watch

That show is pretty entertaining
Currently blaming the D-backs struggles on: the Diamondbacks scoring fewer runs than the other team. Well, I was bound to get it right eventually.
Enjoy it.
Like I said, tell me how you like it. A lot of ppl love it (like me), a lot of people hate it. The IMDB page and forum is certainly worth checking out, too.
Either way, it’s got Jewish gangsters in 1920s/1930s NY, so you can’t go wrong. ;-)
Have the Dodgers lost yet?
Good thing Italy lost
Would make me even more depressed if Italy would have won because I would feel so confident that we could beat them. Then again I felt pretty confident going up against Russia and we all know how that turned out.

As long as you don't use useless information to make your self sound smart, I'm okay with it.
The talent that is Josh Hamilton.
When
did I ever try to sound smart? I thought it’s pretty well understood here that I’m not of the sharpest baseball mind….

My afternoon
Hello, all. I spent the afternoon in the Emergency Room with my Mom, who passed out today at our parish picnic. Looks like I might have had the easier afternoon.
She’s fine now. They think it was a mini-stroke.

Very sorry to hear that
Puts our problems here into perspective. Glad to hear she is okay, and hope she makes a full recovery.

Yeah, she seems to be fine, thanks! Don’t know what happened, and neither do the docs, but she seems to be past whatever it was.

Boston into the twelfth
Papelbon blew a save, and this will hopefully tax their bullpen a lot. Let’s hope it goes 22 innings…
