Gameday Thread, #76: 6/22 vs. Twins

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Minnesota Twins

Ari_medium

Brandon Webb
RHP, 11-3, 3.27

min_medium

Livan Hernandez
RHP, 7-4, 5.51

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

This might be kind of fun, as we face former D-back, Livan Hernandez, no doubt led to the pitcher's mound by a trail of biscuit crumbs. Hernandez 2.0 has been exactly what you'd expect, and what we know and "love" from last year. Opponents are batting a meaty .349 off him, and that goes up to .379 with runners in scoring position. But somehow, he still leads Minnesota in wins. Having sat through enough of his outings for us last year, we know exactly how their fans must feel about him.

We really need Brandon Webb to bounce back from one of the worst outings in his stellar career. He thinks the contract negotiations, which were finally tabled earlier in the week, wore on him: "It's off my mind now. It's not something I'm thinking about. I'm just going to go out there and pitch; we're still talking about 2 1/2 years here. Yeah, I was very disappointed that we didn't get it done, but I'm moving on from that. I've got a responsibility to pitch for these guys in here and for the fans." We'll see what happens: the 'dead arm' which has been affecting Webb over his past couple of outings seems like more than contract negotiations.

Well, the team

cannot use the excuse of not ever seeing Livan before. I hope like hell we light him up.
But deep down, I fear Livan will get a no hitter today.

and OT, good grief, it is already 105º this morning. Laptop and Radio by the pool time!

Buyer or Seller? Hensons article on Yahoo
Arizona Diamondbacks – Baby ‘Backs have grown into Adolescent ‘Backs and the pitching is postseason primed. But should they lull themselves into complacency because the rest of the NL West is pathetic and fail to land a bat, they will regret it in October.

what team has he been watching?

Yup, PR mentioned that article as it related to Matt Holliday.

My response was—well, when was the last time the Dbacks traded for a power bat? Richie Sexson? Raul Mondesi??

Livan Las Vegas

Got errands to do around Sin City this afternoon, but now I’ll be sweating from more than just this oppressive heat. Livan is on the hill today? Think we might hear the name “Houdini” from Gracie before this one is through?

soco's keys to the game

1) Think about getting food before the game starts so I don’t starve to death
2) Have mass quantities of alcohol near by, just in case
3) Dessert?

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads.

by soco on Jun 22, 2008 1:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You forgot

4) Avoiding letting the Twins score six runs in an inning.

I feel this might be helpful. Not sure how much we’ll be around. I might have to head down to Buckeye and hand out fliers for our next lucha-libre show. That would not be my preferred option…

I was hoping that we could get some walks today, but then I read that Livo’s walks are way down this season from last. Then again, we haven’t been able to get hits, let alone walks, off just about anyone we faced lately, so why should today be any different.

Just hoping Webb’s on his game today and hope for the best!

He said that we can't get walks and what we need to hope for is HBP,

so telling us that we only have 2 guys out of 8 positions that can walk seems like useless information.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson

by unnamedDBacksfan on Jun 22, 2008 4:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Today's lineup

  1. S. Drew ss .268
  2. A. Ojeda 2b .308
  3. O. Hudson dh .298
  4. C. Jackson lf .303
  5. C. Tracy 1b .254
  6. M. Reynolds 3b .248
  7. C. Young cf .236
  8. C. Snyder c .240
  9. J. Upton rf .243

Hudson is the designated designated hitter for the day, as it were, which is interesting. At least temporarily, we’ve abandoned the Romero and Salazar in right-field idea, and gone back to Jackson out there. With Webb on the mound, this probably makes sense.

Just checking in

Livan doing what he does: two on, one out and gets Chris Young to stare at three straight pitches. But Brandon is also pitching well, with some good movement – I don’t think either hit was a hard-hit ball.

Right through Drew’s legs. I presume they didn’t call the fly-ball which Jackson lost entirely in the roof as an error. More evidence for why errors and fielding percentage are largely useless as measures of defense.

That went to hell pretty quickly

When I said we should avoid six-run inning, I didn’t mean we should let them get five and then get a double-play.

Of course, after getting two on with nobody out, then contriving to leave the bases empty in the top of the inning, this implosion was probably inevitable.

Funny

how my edit (which also had a smiley on it, btw), has been turned into a Colangelo referendum, when I was simply joining an existing debate re farm system v manager as the primary cause of the team’s woes. My comment really had nothing directly to do with Jerry – I just think blaming the manager (reigning MOY) for everything, implicitly let’s the current team’s architects largely off the hook.

by Diamondhacks on Jun 22, 2008 4:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because

Of course, Jeff Moorad is responsible for Orlando Hudson being our DH today, and also for getting him to try and bunt. Which is where the discussion started – that is, if you noticed…

The thing is, we can’t go back and redraft, or take back the Quentin deal, etc. No point crying over split milk. But we can get Melvin to stop making stupid decisions, and that will help us in futire.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 22, 2008 4:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No one remotely implied

the FO is responsible for Hudson bunting (which is superficial kvetching anyway ), or Hudson as today’s DH (another hindsight aside). The FO is responsible, however, for fronting a good pitching, lousy hitting team that reflects some dubious investments to date and an enviable inheritance. Responsible, if you will, for Orlando being the team’s best position player three years running.

Why that overriding reality gets brushed aside once the game starts, in favor of slamming Melvin for everything, I cant say. Maybe because Kevin Seitzer isnt available.
