If that had been CoJack, there’d’ve been no 12th inning :-)
No emoticon required. Delgado’s scorcher probably would’ve bounced off Conor’s eyebrow all the way to the wall.
If it was hit right at him
I think CJ would have stopped the ball and been able to pick it up in time to get the runner.
Now if he had to move at all to his right or left, all bets are off.
Well, I guess,
Delgado has a pronounced limp ;-)

This is so unbelievably stupid.
EdGon is the long man. He’s it.
Why the hell are we saving Lyon for a “save situation” when one run loses the game right now?!?
How can the local writers let Melvin get away with this bullshit?
This requires further study.
Is this the CW? That you save your closer in a tie game?
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
by DbacksSkins on Jun 11, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
It's the second time Melvin has done it this season.
The last time was in San Diego. Lyon was unavailable, but Pena was the “closer”. He elected to not use Pena and have EdGon stay in and eventually lose.
There is flat out no reasonable justification for this practice. An extra inning tie game is an even higher leverage than a lead. If the long reliever can pitch in a tie game, then they can pitch with a lead. And what happens if the team gets a lead, the closer comes in and then blows the save? Then the team is doubly ######.
I know, I remember the first game.

Why does that matter?
Every pitcher will give up a single like that from time to time, and that seriously could have been caught by Burke. But, of the whole roster, no one else gets smack talk about it from you for pitching like that.
And, of course, you don’t acknowledge that Gonzales pitched a perfectly fine inning other than that one at-bat.

bitching about bullpen usage after they threw seven scoreless in a hostile environment before yielding the game winner seems misplaced to me.
Fun game, unfortunate result.
by Diamondhacks on Jun 11, 2008 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I bitch because it's so clearly illogical
but BoMel has now down it twice – both in losses.
If we’re going to lose in extra innings, I would at least prefer it not happen with our best reliever never getting off the bench.
The offense sucks to, but as someone with no hitting skills to speak of I don’t think I can come up with any critiques that would be worth a shit. It’s much easier to correct to a manager that flat-out doesn’t give his team the best chance to win in an extra inning game.
I understand
the basic leverage argument, but like any theory, it’s based on assumptions – assumptions that may not fit the Diamondbacks very well.
One assumption is that a “best reliever” has been clearly identified as you have done with Lyon. I’ll concede he’s put on a very nice run, but most folks projected Brandon to regress to a 4.00 ERA (something he still could do) , and he struggled in early April. For much of this year, Chad Qualls was our “best reliever” – until he was the worst. My point is there’s no Mariano Rivera here, head and shoulders above everybody else, and if the Dbacks contrive a “best reliever” merely to fit a theoretical role instead of on overwhelming, sustainable merit, that may be counterproductive, like trying to time the stock market based on past results.
I’ll tell you a guy who’s head and shoulders above the other relievers who we should use in every high leverage situation. Brandon Webb :-) We laugh because it’s obvious that doing so, in the long run, would be counterproductive to long range team goals, even if it improved our chances of winning a particular game. This isnt Game 7 of the World Series and Melvin is managing a season, not individual winner take all victories, exacted at any cost. The costs of moving a reliever around (as opposed to a starter) arent as obvious, but I suspect they may still be substantial.
I like Lyon’s makeup and think the personality that makes him a good closer might also serve him well in the flexible role you envision. But if you make Lyon flexible, then you make other RP’s, with different makeups, flexible as well. Great on paper, but these are human beings and I’m not sure that kind of arrangement is in the long term interests of the team. Someone worse than Lyon has to close out wins – on the road in hostile territory. Solid pitchers no longer work through their own messes because now that’s Brandon’s job? Until, presumably, he turns into Chad Qualls.
If you’re going to lose in extra innings, I would at least prefer it not happen with our best reliever never getting off the bench.
We both think Lyon gives us at least a slightly better chance to win in a given situation, but this is actually a big philosophical difference between us. “If we’re going to lose”, I would much prefer it happen without “wasting” our best reliever, (because very often that’s what you’d be doing) , potentially compromising win preservation for another day.
