Trade Value of Micah Owings

Just throwing this out there for conversation...I love Micah in a D-backs uniform, but wouldn't he be a far more effective player in the AL where he can DH every day and pitch every 5th day? I would think that a low-contract, non-arbitration eligible player with his upside (both picthing and hitting) would bring a haul in return. Do you think this is even something that Josh Byrnes discusses with other GMs?

Don't think so....

Here’s the thing with Micah—he is a great hitting PITCHER -

But I disagree that he is a great HITTER – sure his avg, OPS, etc are way up there, but he’s only picking up the bat once a week with a few pinch hitting appearances sprinkled in.

On his merits as a pitcher, right now he is a good 3 or 4 starter, nothing more.

Micah gives a distinct advantage in the NL because it is another bat in the line-up – but I don’t think he has enough history as a Major League hitter to even be considered in a DH role in the AL.

Micah's slumping lately.

His OPS+ is down to 96. ;-)

Nope.

Why would we want to trade a young, cost-controlled pitcher with a 2008 ERA+ of 119 and OPS+ of 96? We’re not the A’s, in perpetual trade seller mode, constantly trying to get younger and younger until the average age of our 40-man roster is 17.

I do find your DH idea interesting, though; except that so far, IIRC, BoMel has restricted Micah’s PH appearances to the second and third offdays between his starts. I don’t know what effect DHing for 4 straight days between starts might have on his pitching ability—and, as has been hammered home, his greatest value is as a starter.

In all seriousness?

Absolutely. I wouldn’t want to make that trade, though.

No, not in a million years.

Why would we be looking to dump young talent already? didn’t we learn anything from Voldemonts departure?

I don’t think it’s such a dumb question. This can’t be equated to Q’s departure at all. The bottom had fallen out of Q’s stock at the time. Meanwhile, Owings’ value continues to grow. It’d take a lot for me to ship Owings off… but it’s not a ridiculous question. In fact, if you couple two of the last posts together I could see a reasonable scenario. Perhaps Hudson gets shipped for young pitching talent leaving a spot for Scherzer, meanwhile Owings gets shipped for a hot 2B prospect (perhaps Milwaukee’s Weeks’—since they’re hurting so bad for pitching?). I haven’t looked close enough to see whether this is reasonable or not, but it’s not fair to just shoot this down right out of the gate. Everybody has a pricetag, even our beloved Micah “Bambino” Owings.

That was the point of my question

I prefaced by saying JUST FOR CONVERSATION (& added that I love the guy)—there is no harm in seeing what a guy’s trade value is.

by G Dub on May 29, 2008 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Trust me, you guys don't want Weeks.

Unless it’s for some AA guy.

Brandon Webb, that's all I'm going to say.

Time out!

never said it a dumb or ridiculous question. He was asking for opinions and I just put in my 0.02¢
Yes, everyone has a price tag and for me alone, it is very high.

Owings for Jason Bay

Bay is signed through 2009. Pretty reasonable cost too. 5.75 for O8, so owed less than 4 million for remainder of this year. 7.5 Million for next year.

Of course that would leave you with two left fielders, but they can force Byrnes to accept a trade. The problem is finding a taker without having to eat too much salary. They’d probably have to eat at least 10 million to find a taker. Maybe a good deal more.

by shoewizard on May 29, 2008 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe,

we can pick up Brad Hawpe on the cheap. He’s in the first year of a three year – $17M deal, but he’s always been the least-fan favoritish player on the team so we can always hope that there’s a little Moorad Jr. running the team.

It’s also great for symmetry – let’s get another corner outfielder that has dramatically under-performed his career numbers after trying to play through hamstring issues all season. At the very least, as someone on the good side of 30 and a career OPS+ over 100 he could be the better half of a left field platoon with Byrnes (Hawpe’s career OPS vs. left-handers is almost 200 points lower than against righties).

Sure, we all WISH that we could trade Byrnes, but let’s be honest, NO ONE is going to take on that contract. If we have to eat the money, we might as well as keep him on the team to be the 4th outfielder/mascot he was born to be.

Hard to imagine

the team actually making Byrnes a platoon/part time player.

I know they should….but I just find it hard to imagine.

by shoewizard on May 29, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

They can sell it,

as the team leader and fan favorite Eric Byrnes being such a true ballplayer and selfless individual that he’s willing to take limited playing time for the betterment of the team.

I think there’s enough people in the front office with the baseball sense to know it’s a good move. They just have to give the Moorad types a face-saving out.

Not to the AL

As mentioned above, he’s a (very) good hitting pitcher, rather than a good hitter. By going to the American League, he would go from being the best at his position [pitcher] in the entire league, to being an average at best DH. Plus, even if you avoid the wear and tear of fielding, you still have to run the bases as a DH – Hudson and Johnson will tell you the perils involved in that!

However, the concept of trading him for a second-baseman to replace Hudson does appeal [is Owings that much better on the mound than alternatives like the Petit Unit?]. Maybe someone like Kelly Johnson of Atlanta? Owings certainly seemed to enjoy hitting there last season. :-) Just a thought.

As an aside

Over on Baseball Prospectus, in the free content section, Nate Silver discusses the best-hitting pitchers.

by Jim McLennan on May 29, 2008 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

That was the piece that got my mind wandering on the subject

I like the Kelly Johnson idea-my cousin played in the Braves minor league system with him, McCann, Franceour, Scott Thorman and the since traded Andy Marte-RAVES about Johnson as did Mark Grace during Friday’s broadcast. The Jason Bay scenario is also interesting but obviously financilly complicated. I was curious as to what people felt Micah’s value was—harmless exercise to procrastinate working just a little bit longer… :)

by G Dub on May 29, 2008 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

His value right now

Would be high to teams like the Tigers, who have big problems with their rotation and could do with a fillin DH from time to time as Sheffield seems hurt so often. Sadly I can’t think of anyone on that Detroit team they would part with other then Inge, but he plays the positions we already have sorted.

So...time for another drink then?
